I made a fool of myself – Lando Norris has ‘a lot of regret' after collision

George Russell delivered a brilliant performance to win from pole position to claim his first win of the season ahead of his Red Bull rival Max Verstappen. Italian teenager Kimi Antonelli finished third to land his first podium in Formula One.
But the 10th round of the championship in Montreal will be remembered for Norris' friendly fire on Piastri which deals a major blow to the British driver's hopes of winning the world championship.

The papaya-on-papaya flashpoint arrived with three laps to go when Norris launched his McLaren underneath Piastri at the hairpin as they duelled for fourth.
Piastri was able to slingshot his McLaren back alongside Norris as they attacked the concluding right-left chicane.
Piastri had the benefit of holding the inside line under braking to move back ahead of Norris. However, the British driver enjoyed a better exit onto the start-finish straight and sensed an opportunity to squeeze past Piastri.
But Norris misjudged the move and crashed into the back of his team-mate's car. Norris screeched to a halt with damage.
'Are you alright, dude,' said Norris' engineer Will Joseph on the radio. 'Yes, I am sorry,' replied Norris. 'It's all my bad. All my fault. Unlucky. Sorry. Stupid from me.'

Piastri was able to continue and finished fourth – the race ending behind the safety car following the McLaren collision – to extend his championship lead from 10 points to 22.
'Rule number one is not to make contact with your team-mate, and that's what I did,' said Norris.
'McLaren is my family and I race for them every single weekend and try and do well for them on and off the track. So when I let them down like this and make a fool of myself like I did today, I have a lot of regret. I'm not proud of myself, I feel bad, so apologies to all of them.
'Of course, he (Oscar) is not going to be happy with what happened. I wouldn't be either if it was the other way around so I owe him an apology for such a risk.
'He raced me fairly until that point. So, you know, Oscar did nothing wrong here, just myself.

'I've let down the team, and that's going to stay with me for a little while. We will go back to the factory, and I am sure that's not going to be a nice moment for me because of what happened today.'
McLaren have long been prepared for a collision between their two drivers and Norris' swift move to accept blame was welcomed by Piastri. It will also go some way to diffuse any tension within the British team.
'Lando has apologised to me and that says a little bit,' said Piastri. 'Lando is a very good guy and it is in his character and personality to say what he thinks, even if that is detrimental to himself.
'It is good for the team going forward that we can have these conversations and race like this and have things not go the way we want and get through them.
'If we were too aggressive going through a corner and we clearly got it wrong than that is one thing, but it was an unfortunate incident on a straight and it will not change anything and that is how it should be because we are both fighting for the world championship.'

Dan Evans stuns Frances Tiafoe in first round at Queen's

The 35-year-old kept his cool on a sun-baked Andy Murray Arena at Queen's Club with a 7-5 6-2 victory. It was the former British number one's second career win over a top-20 opponent on grass, having knocked 16th-ranked Nikoloz Basilashvili out of Wimbledon six years ago. Evans, now ranked a lowly 199 and mainly competing at lower-tier Challenger events, said: 'It's always amazing to play here. I was lucky I got the wild card. I've been playing the lower tournaments, but this is why I'm hanging around to try and get some wins on the grass.' A run of five games in a row did the damage, with a neat serve and volley wrapping up a tight first set. It was Evans who took a tumble early in the second set, but he recovered to consolidate another break with an ace. He had a stroke of luck when a forehand clipped the net and rolled over to clinch a second break, before wrapping up a notable win with a volley. Evans will face Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard or Brandon Nakashima in round two.

Tough talks ahead but McLaren want drivers to race each other

MONTREAL, June 16 (Reuters) - McLaren will continue to let Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris race freely for the Formula One title but there will be some tough talks back at the factory after Sunday's collision in Canada. Norris accepted the blame after hitting the rear of his championship-leading Australian teammate's car while trying to overtake in a battle for fourth place three laps from the finish. The incident between the title frontrunners, with Piastri extending his lead to 22 points while Norris failed to score, was the talk of the paddock at Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve and had been long predicted. McLaren principal Andrea Stella said the team would discuss once the dust had settled how to prevent it from happening again. "Definitely there will be good conversations, but they will happen once we are all rested and calm," the Italian told reporters. He said the team would seek to "preserve our parity and equality in terms of how we go racing at McLaren between our two drivers. "The being free to race and the being clear as to how we go racing is a value of racing," he added. "It is a value of racing that we want to try and exercise and respect as much as we can, rather than every time we have a proximity between the two cars then having control from the pit wall. "We want to give Lando and Oscar opportunities to race and opportunities to be at the end of the season in the position that they deserve to be in." Stella said the points should reflect the drivers' performance rather than any team orders. "This is not necessarily a simple and straight exercise but we want to try and do it as best as we can," he said. "So I don't foresee that today's episode will change our approach from this point of view. "If anything it will reinforce and it will strengthen that the principles we have require more caution by our drivers." Stella said the incident was a simple misjudgement of distance rather than an aggressive statement of intent and he appreciated Norris' ownership of responsibility. He recognised the Briton's confidence could be dented, with the driver always open in his emotions and prone to blaming himself in a title battle increasingly going Piastri's way, but Norris could count on every support. "On this one I want to be completely clear," said Stella. "It's full support to Lando. We will have conversations and the conversations may be even tough. But there's no doubt over the support we give to Lando. "Lando himself will have to show his character to overcome this kind of episode. Make sure that he only takes the learnings, he only takes what will make him a stronger driver." Piastri has won five of the 10 races so far to Norris' two with 14 remaining. The next race is in Austria on June 29.
