Motherwell's young keeper says patience has paid off as he grabs chance

Matty Connelly has been handed the gloves in Aston Oxborough's absence
Motherwell goalkeeper Matty Connelly says patience has paid off at Fir Park, and intends to grab his chance with both hands.

The 22-year-old was heading back on loan to League Two newcomers East Kilbride on loan, but an injury to first-choice Motherwell shot-stopper Aston Oxborough suddenly opened up some possibilities.

After Callum Ward sold a goal in the 2-2 draw at Clyde in Motherwell's Premier Sports Cup opener, Connelly was given the nodd for a 2-1 win over Peterhead on Tuesday and a 1-0 triumph at Stenhousemuir yesterday.

Connelly, who wasn't really tested at Ochilview, said: 'I've been patiently waiting for my chance. I thought I did all right on my debut, and to get the chance to play again on Saturday, I could myself really lucky.
'I'm thankful to the gaffer for giving me the chance.
'I think it's a good base to make your debut, and when you're the team that's expected to win, it's just following that through.

''I was buzzing. It was a really calm game for me, no shots on goal, just kind of playing it out the back and stuff like that.
'The boys in front of me did brilliantly.'

Connelly and Co can win Group D with a win over second-placed Morton on Tuesday, though they will be waiting on the Greenock club's final game at home to Clyde on Saturday.
The young shot-stopper said: 'We're in a good position to qualify from the group, but Tuesday's another challenge and we'll try to get another three points and top the group.

'That's our last game, so we want the win.'
Connelly has been at East Kilbride on loan for the last couple of years and played a major role last season as they won the Lowland League and the pyramid play-off against Bonnyrigg Rose.
And he said: 'East Kilbride have been brilliant, the coaches – Mick Kennedy, Si Ferry, Blair Munn, Zander Cowie the goalie coach – have all been brilliant with me.

'I went back there twice and enjoyed it the first time, and set out to get promoted, and thankfully they did that.
'I would go back out there if needed. The plan when I came back in this summer was to go back out on loan, then I got the chance here to play games.
'But I'll see what happens, I do what I'm told!'

Aberdeen manager Jimmy Thelin says work is continuing in the background as the club look to add new recruits before the end of the transfer window. We're working on things, but also preparing this team who's here right now for the game at the weekend [Celtic], but who knows, the window is open." Asked if any fresh faces will come in before the Europa League play-off against FCSB or Drita on August 21, Thelin responded: "Again, we have work ongoing, but it's difficult to say exactly what's going to happen, but we have some ideas." Thelin conceded that Aberdeen were second best to Hearts at a raucous and expectant Tynecastle and refused to use the potential excuse of the Jambos having a competitive edge from their Premier Sports Cup matches. Hearts put good pressure on us, and then they win these second balls and create a momentum with the crosses, they pick up the second ball and another cross, and then from there on they were better in the first half, and also these 50-50 situations around and inside the box. "I think in the second half we got better with the ball and started creating some chances in their box, but we were not really clinical today, and they were also good when they were first on the rebound, so we were not really there. "And then they find another situation and they score the second goal, and then it was difficult to try to find a way back into the game and give us a chance to get a point, but they were good in how they defended the box and how they challenged our box. In this challenge we need to take a step as a team and grow in the future.

Clark Robertson tells it straight over Steven Pressley as view from Dundee dressing room emerges

The Dark Blues failed to get out of their Premier Sports Cup group and lost their opening home league game to Hibs Clark Robertson has insisted the players are buying into Steven Pressley and if everyone sticks together they can really drive Dundee forward. ‌ It comes as the Dark Blues failed to get out of their Premier Sports Cup group and then lost their Premiership opener against Hibs. ‌ The alarm bells are ringing but Pressley has been asked to do a total rebuild. ‌ Robertson knows they still need strengthening and other new boys are still finding their feet. The defender stated: 'It's obviously difficult. You've got to gel quickly as a team. We've got a lot to work on. 'I think we showed good parts of our game today when we were compact out of possession. 'We've got to believe more in our quality going forward and trust each other more in the ball. 'I think we will grow as a group as the season goes on. 'I think the manager's alluded that there's probably more players coming in to make us stronger as well, which will help us. ‌ "I think we've just got to stick together. We're all buying into what the manager's been doing on the training pitch with us. 'It's up to us to deliver that on the pitch. Like I say, we've got a lot more learning to do.' The Dundee support booed their team off the pitch on Sunday but Robertson has urged them to keep the faith. ‌ 'It's up to us to be able to give them something to shout about on the pitch,' the former Aberdeen player acknowledged. 'Like I say, we'll stick together as a group in that changing room. Hopefully the fans stick with us as well. 'Like I say, we'll grow over the course of the season. Hopefully we can make it a successful season.' ‌ Robertson knows Dundee didn't show enough in an attacking sense to get an equaliser against Hibernian. The central defender added: 'Like I say, we were comfortable in our shape without putting them under pressure. I think we were passive. 'There has to be triggers when we are in that shape to be able to get up against them and try to get us higher up the pitch. ‌ 'I think probably in the last ten minutes we did that a bit more, but not enough during the second half.' Dundee struggled for form at Dens last season and that is something Robertson acknowledged that needs to be improved. ‌ He stated: 'It's a new group, There's still more new players to come in. 'I think for any successful team you've got to be good at home. We've got to make the home advantage count. 'It's something we will look to improve on, obviously. We conceded too many goals last season as well. It's something we need to improve on.' ‌ Things don't get any easier as Dundee are away to Rangers this weekend. The Light Blues are still smarting after being out-played by Motherwell and having to hold on for a point. Robertson said: 'Those are the games you want to play going away to Ibrox. We're going there to try and get a good result. There's no reason why we can't.' ‌ Head coach Pressley is hoping that captain Simon Murray will be back for Ibrox. He missed the Hibs' game with a knee injury. Robertson knows he will be pivotal for Dundee. 'There's no getting away from that,' he insisted. 'Not even just his goals from last season. It's his presence in the dressing room. 'Everyone looks up to him as well. Hopefully he's not out for too long.'
