Plapp solos to Giro stage eight win, Ulissi takes pink jersey
After nearly 20 riders formed a breakaway group with 100 km to go, Plapp switched gears when he attacked the Montelago climb and the Australian did not look back as he rode to victory with no chaser in sight.
Wilco Kelderman of Visma-Lease a Bike finished second while XDS-Astana's Diego Ulissi came in third, with both riders finishing 38 seconds behind Plapp.
But Ulissi's effort was enough for him to take the overall leader's pink jersey from Juan Ayuso, with the Italian screaming in delight when he was told the "Maglia Rosa" was his.

Coach Cahill confident Sinner will be fine ahead of US Open defence
Darren Cahill has played down concerns about Jannik Sinner's health after he was forced to retire from the Cincinnati Open final, saying the world number one is recovering and they are confident he will be ready ahead of his U.S. Open defence. The 24-year-old Italian withdrew from the U.S. Open mixed doubles event, where he was to partner Katerina Siniakova, a day after illness forced him to retire five games into his Cincinnati final against world number two Carlos Alcaraz. Cahill said the Australian Open and Wimbledon champion was suffering from a virus. "I spoke briefly with him last night. He was feeling a little better," Cahill told ESPN on Wednesday. "He'll rest, that's the plan, and I hope he can get on the court on Thursday and start hitting some balls. We're confident he'll be fine." The U.S. Open runs from August 24 to September 7.

Spurs' Tel says he won't let racial abuse bring him down
Tottenham Hotspur forward Mathys Tel said he would not allow the racial abuse directed at him online following his side's UEFA Super Cup defeat by Paris St-Germain bring him down. Spurs said they were "disgusted" by the abuse aimed at the 20-year-old Frenchman, who missed a spot-kick during their penalty shootout defeat by PSG in Italy last Wednesday. "I was also disappointed about Wednesday night but racism has no place in our society," Tel posted on social media on Tuesday. "I know where I come from, where I started and none of this will bring me down. With work and humility, respect reigns." Bournemouth forward Antoine Semenyo was also subjected to racist abuse during his side's 4-2 defeat by Liverpool at Anfield on Friday. A 47-year-old man from Liverpool, who was arrested on suspicion of racially abusing Semenyo, has been conditionally bailed and banned from attending soccer matches.

Carapaz to miss Vuelta a Espana, focusing on world championships
Former Olympic champion Richard Carapaz will miss this year's Vuelta a Espana as he is yet to fully recover from an illness, the Ecuadorian confirmed on Tuesday. Carapaz, second in the 2020 Vuelta, also missed the Tour de France with the same gastrointestinal illness and has not raced since finishing third overall at the Giro d'Italia in May. "After the illness I had, I had to stop several times as I couldn't train for more than two or three days at a time," Carapaz said in a EF Education-EasyPost team statement. "Now in Ecuador, I'm trying to get back to normal with training and continue moving forward with what we had planned. I'm almost fully recovered now." Carapaz, who won the road race gold medal in Tokyo, said his season focus was now the world championships in Rwanda. "Now, the next goals we've set are the Italian classics, especially Il Lombardia, and also the world championships in Rwanda," Carapaz said. "It's a very special world championship for me, where I have a big opportunity, and I want to prepare for it the best way possible." The world championships are being held in Kigali from September 21, the first time the event has been staged in Africa.
