Taiwan's president to visit Paraguay in August, World News
Paraguay is one of only 12 countries to maintain formal diplomatic ties with Chinese-claimed Taiwan, and the only one in South America.
Visits by Taiwanese presidents to Central and South America always involve what are officially only stopovers in the United States given the distance from Taiwan, but are often the most important parts of the trip given Washington is the island's top international backer and arms supplier.
Pena, speaking at a bilateral investment conference in the South American nation's capital, said Lai would be coming next month.
"We are preparing anxiously and with much affection to receive President Lai in 30 days," Pena told the conference, which Lai's Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung also attended.
Belize will also host Lai during a planned visit to the region, a government official told Reuters, without giving a date.
Taiwan has a handful of other allies in Latin America and the Caribbean, but several have cut ties in recent years in favour of relations with economic powerhouse China, which considers Taiwan to be a Chinese province.
"This is to show the world that small countries have the capacity to become major global players," Pena added.
Taiwan's presidential office declined to comment, saying that, as in the past, if it had anything to announce it would do so "in due course". It normally confirms such trips only shortly before they take place.
Lai has yet to go to the United States since US President Donald Trump took office for the second time earlier this year, though late last year Lai transited Hawaii and the US territory of Guam while visiting the Pacific.
The US State Department also did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the possibility of a Lai transit next month.
China strongly objects to any interactions between Taiwan and the United States and routinely denounces US stopovers of Taiwanese presidents.
Taiwan's government rejects China's territorial claims and says it has a right to forge ties with other countries and engage with the world.

'It is surprising that six people were acquitted while eight were convicted, even though they were all charged under the same allegations,' he said. The case relates to one of several incidents stemming from the May 9 unrest, involving alleged incitement during attacks near a major intersection in Lahore. Moazzam said separate trials were ongoing in connection with other incidents that day. Those sentenced include senior PTI figures who held positions in Khan's Punjab government: Yasmin Rashid, a former provincial health minister; Ejaz Chaudhry, a senator; Mehmoodur Rashid, a former housing minister; and Umar Sarfraz Cheema, a former provincial governor and aide to Khan. Greek police arrest Moldovan tycoon Plahotniuc on Interpol notice

Vladimir Plahotniuc, considered one of Moldova's richest men and a former lawmaker, was arrested at the Athens airport on an Interpol notice on Monday evening. He has been accused in connection with a $1 billion fraud against Moldovan banks in 2014-2015, a case known locally as the "theft of the century". He has denied wrongdoing. Police also arrested former Moldovan lawmaker Constantin Tutu, 38, who is wanted by Russia for allegedly trafficking drugs internationally, police officials said. Both suspects had an Interpol red notice issued against them. Moldova's General Inspectorate of Police confirmed that Plahotniuc, who was the leader of the Democratic party from 2016-2019, and Tutu had been arrested. Plahotniuc, 59, is suspected to have fled Moldova in 2019. Following a tip-off, Greek police launched an investigation which found that Plahotniuc was living with his partner in a luxurious villa in the southern suburbs of Athens. Tutu also lived in the same residence, the officials said, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the confidentiality of the probe. In 2023, the European Union imposed sanctions on seven people from Moldova, including Plahotniuc, for actions that it said destabilised and undermined the territorial integrity of Moldova and neighbouring Ukraine. They will appear before a prosecutor on Wednesday to respond to charges. Moldova is expected to request his extradition, the country's General Prosecutor's office said. REUTERS
