Hayden Young: Injured Fremantle Dockers star a chance to return for crunch Friday night clash against Brisbane
Young injured his groin against Carlton on August 3 and while the Dockers were wary about putting a timeline on the severity, he struggled to run freely last week and appeared set to be sidelined for several matches.
But after sitting out the thrilling win over Port Adelaide, the highly skilled onballer will have a fitness test this week to see if he will be available to face the Lions.
'He's progressed well through the gym and has been doing some good running kilometres,' Fremantle high performance manager Phil Merriman said.
If Young plays, the Dockers will have an incredibly small injury list at the business end of the season and have their star centre square trio available for just the eighth time this season.
Young's importance to Fremantle was on show when he came on as the sub against Collingwood and helped to change the game. then he won the Glendinning-Allan Medal while playing for just three quarters against West Coast.
Matthew Johnson is also on track to return against the Western Bulldogs next week as he works to rehab his ankle.
'Johnno is going well,' Merriman said.
'He's got a few more hurdles to jump over this week.'
Once Young and Johnson return to action, Fremantle will only have Sam Sturt (knee), Aiden Riddle (foot) and Odin Jones (back) on their injury list.
The Dockers are building enviable depth after Corey Wagner returned from a heel injury in the WAFL last weekend.
He was carefully managed but still had 20 possessions and will increase his playing time against Subiaco on Saturday.
'He's pulled up really well following the game at the weekend, so the plan is for him to have a normal training week and play more minutes,' Merriman said.

Defender Luke Beecken set to make AFL debut for Lions against Dockers
Luke Beecken will make his AFL debut on Friday night against Fremantle in one of four changes to the Brisbane Lions team beaten by Sydney last weekend. Selected by Brisbane in last year's mid-season draft from SANFL club Woodville West Torrens, Beecken has been rewarded for his good form in the Lions' VFL team. The 24-year-old rebounding defender joins fit-again pair Ryan Lester and Brandon Starcevich, and recalled forward Sam Day as inclusions in a Brisbane side still needing a win to guarantee itself a finals berth. The quartet replace defender Tom Doedee, who has knee soreness, and omitted trio Henry Smith, Will McLachlan and Dev Robertson. Lester's return from concussion for the clash at Optus Stadium was expected, while fellow defender Starcevich did enough at training this week to prove he had recovered from hamstring injury that led to him being a late withdrawal from the Lions side that lost by two points to the Swans at the Gabba. Brisbane co-captain Lachie Neale (quad) and forward Kai Lohmann (calf) remain on sidelined. Neale's ongoing absence will give teenager Levi Ashcroft another opportunity to spend more time in the heart of the Lions midfield alongside his older brother Will. 'Before the game (against Sydney) I knew I'd be playing a little bit of midfield so I went up to him and had a little chat about that,' the younger Ashcroft said. 'We thought that was pretty cool. It was a bit of a dream of ours to be able to start in the middle together at some stoppages and centre-bounces. 'It's a really cool feeling and I can't wait to do it (on Friday night) again. 'I've been on the wing and playing half-forward, but I'm definitely looking forward to playing in the midfield with some of the more experienced guys, and showing what I can do in there.' Ashcroft said the reigning premiers were 'looking forward to bouncing back' against the Dockers. 'We're feeling really good,' he said. 'We had a bit of a tough week last week. I thought we did really well in the contest and a few other things, so we were a bit unlucky there. 'We didn't play poorly. We just had a few bad moments or bad quarters, but we've just got to stay connected, play together and continue to play our way because we know our best can beat the best and beat any team in this competition.'

Fremantle make just one change with Corey Wagner recalled as Dockers resist rapid Hayden Young return
Fremantle has resisted the temptation to recall gun midfielder Hayden Young for Friday night's must win clash against Brisbane at Optus Stadium. But swingman Corey Wagner has been recalled from a heel injury, with small forward Isaiah Dudley omitted. Wagner has missed the past two matches but made a successful return in Peel Thunder's loss to Perth last weekend with a 20-disposal effort that featured five inside 50s in managed minutes. The Lions have been bolstered by the return of experienced defenders Ryan Lester and Brandon Starcevich and have also recalled key forward Sam Day and named Luke Beecken for his debut. Tom Dooedee will miss through injury while Henry Smith, Devan Robertson and Will McLachlan have been omitted. Young was this week listed as a test to take on the Lions after he injured his groin in the Dockers' win over Carlton earlier this month. The Glendinning-Allan medallist had also battled a persistent hamstring injury throughout the year which required surgery. Speaking before Young was in and out of drills at main training on Wednesday morning, Longmuir said the 24-year-old was 'unlikely' to take on the Lions as they look to seal a spot in finals for the first time since 2022. 'That's a tricky one. He's got to get through training first, which in my mind is pretty unlikely for this week with the way it sits right now,' he said. Young is now poised to return for the Dockers' round 24 clash with the Western Bulldogs which will be followed by the pre-finals bye and will aid his recovery. Wagner's place in the team is crucial for balance as he can play defence or midfield. Nat Fyfe, who announced this week he will retire at the of the football year after 16 seasons, has been named on the interchange bench. Fyfe is likely to start as the sub, but Longmuir has said the veteran was able to play a full game if needed before his illustrious career comes to an end. The inclusion of Starcevich is critical for the Lions as a starter on either of Fremantle's gun forwards Sam Switkowski or Rising Star fancy Murphy Reid. The match is crucial to both teams top-four chances, as well as their hopes of playing in September with spots in the eight tight.
