Sophie Ellis-Bextor says she discusses toxic masculinity with her five sons
The Murder On The Dancefloor singer, 46, is mother to Mickey, Jesse, Ray, Kit and Sonny, whom she shares with her husband, musician Richard Jones.
Ellis-Bextor said while she will 'keep an eye on' their mobile phones, she does not demonise things that could 'shut down communication'.
In recent months the success of hit Netflix show Adolescence has sparked conversations around misogyny among young boys online and the radicalisation of young men, with the creators discussing the topic in Parliament in April.
Ellis-Bextor told Good Housekeeping UK: 'I've always had a lot of faith in my boys. We've openly chatted about toxic masculinity for a long time.
'My eldest is very articulate about these things, so none of it was new to my house. Sometimes people have an idea of what boys are like, as if they're a different species.
'As I far as I'm concerned, I'm raising five people who happen to be boys. I keep an eye on (mobile phone screen time), because that's parenting, but if you start demonising things, you shut down communication.
'Then you're like those parents in the 1950s who made kids burn their rock 'n' roll albums.'
Speaking about her husband, Ellis-Bextor added: 'When we got married, we'd already had our first baby.
'My mum said: 'Make sure you always choose each other over anything else, even the kids.' She was right. Even though the kids might roll their eyes if they see us hugging or whatever, they're happy that we're happy.
'We have fun as a family, too. Last year, they came with us for a lot of the tour.'
The singer also discussed her forthcoming album, Perimenopop, a play on the words perimenopause and pop.
'There's still this idea that only young people make pop music,' she said.
'As soon as I had the new album title, I felt like, 'Now I can literally be myself.'
'This album is about poking fun at this gloomy chapter and the narrative around it that women should be quietening down and becoming invisible… I don't feel like that at all.'
The full interview can be read now in the August issue of Good Housekeeping UK.

Netflix drops 'bleak and gripping' period drama starring Line Of Duty legend packed full of sex, spies and subterfuge
Netflix has dropped a 'bleak and gripping' period drama starring a Line Of Duty legend packed full of sex, spies and subterfuge. The Secret Agent first hit screens on the BBC nearly ten years ago in 2016 and delves into 1886 London. The four-part series is based on Joseph Conrad's novel which shares the same title as the drama. It follows Verloc (Toby Jones), a sex shopkeeper and Russian spy, who has to deal with 'pressure to commit an act of politically-motivated terrorism,' according to the synopsis. Other cast members include Line Of Duty star Vicky McClure who plays Verloc's wife, Winnie, as well as Stephen Graham as Chief Inspector Heat. The Secret Agent was recently added to Netflix for fans to stream and has received a range of reviews since it first aired. While The Telegraph only rated it two out of five stars and described it as 'one of the bleakest, murkiest and most disturbing dramas' of the year, the Radio Times dubbed the series a 'gripping period tale'. However, The Mail's Christopher Stevens scored it a disappointing two out of five stars too and felt the show lacked 'the oomph' of a 'classic thriller' but overall said it was a 'stolid literary adaptation'. The Secret Agent has a modest 6.1/10 score on IMDb and one fan gushed: 'Dark, bleak, brooding but really good!' While another called the series 'excellent' and rated it eight out of ten. 'I cannot understand the negative reviews about this film, it was excellent, the only actor l had heard of was Toby Jones who played Capt. Mainwaring in the remake of Dad's Army, and l think that's what made it so much better then a film with big start names it felt more authentic, it was sad, dramatic, drama, but bedside anything else it was excellent l give it 9/10,' one viewer chimed in. However, someone else was disappointed and said: 'It's a strange and unconvincing story, but it has its points of interest, as it deals with the murky late Victorian world of mysterious anarchists. 'Unfortunately, this BBC version is not very well done. The main problem is that it is too slow and does not flow.' It comes as a 'fascinating and suspenseful' Netflix thriller left fans gripped with a 'psychopathic' leading man and a 'dark' twist. The Occupant first hit screens back in 2020 and is available to watch on the streaming platform. It follows unemployed advertising executive Javier Muñoz (Javier Gutiérrez) who becomes obsessed with the new tenants of the home he had to give up. However, things take a horrifying twist when 'his motives toward the family turn sinister,' according to the synopsis. Despite only having a modest 65% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, The Occupant has still managed to collect plenty of praise from fans. The Secret Agent is available to stream on Netflix now.

Just weeks later, he took part in spin-off show Love Island Games. In February this year, Scott even revealed he had been lined up for the 2025 series of Love Island All Stars but had pulled out with just two days to go. In a scathing attack on the All Stars lineup, he said at the time: 'I'm 24 and a lot of the girls in there they're in their 30s, mid-30s, and when the cast was announced, there were conversations about me doing it. I was like, 'I'm 24. these are in the mid-thirties'. 'It's giving Love Island Old Stars.' Scott has now turned his back on the Love Island franchise and is opting for something new - Perfect Match. He has been announced as one of 22 celebrities to be taking part in the third series of the popular Netflix show. The new series drops on August 1 but was filmed last year. Also among the cast are Ollie Sutherland from Love Is Blind UK and Amber Desiree 'AD' Smith, who found fame on Love Island Blind US. Although Perfect Match has not aired yet, the couple have made no secret of how well they got on while filming the show. Love Island legend reveals he pulled out of All Stars TWO days before show kicked off Sparks definitely flew and Ollie and AD are now already engaged and expecting a baby together. The other celebs who will be seen on Perfect Match alongside Scott, Ollie and AD include Love Is Blind UK's Freddie Powell and a string of US reality stars. After the line-up was announced, Scott was quick to share the news with his followers on Instagram. Alongside his cast shot, he wrote: "You lot thought I was done? Nah Representing @loveisland on international TV. AUGUST 1ST @netflix BE THERE." Over on Reddit, fans have been quick to discuss his latest TV dating show move. One wrote: "Man's never met a dating show he doesn't like 🤣 go on then son!" Another added: "I cant hate on his hustle. He is getting work." 7 Scott first found fame in Love Island UK in 2023 Credit: Rex 7 He later jetted to America for Love Island USA Credit: Peacock 7 Scott also took part in Love Island Games Credit: Peacock A third wrote: "Scott was on 3 different seasons of love island and left with no one. Now he's doing perfect match, next up will be celebs go dating 😭." And someone else chimed in: "Bless him...I won't be surprised if he comes in the final week as per, gets a little slap n tickle then leaves with no girl just a bunch of new international friends lol." The upcoming series of The Perfect Match will be hosted by Nick Lachey. Scott appeared in the 2023 series of Love Island UK and was coupled up with Catherine Agbaje. However, Catherine dumped him for Casa Amor boy Elom Ahlijah-Wilson. The pair stayed together but split just days after being dumped from the villa. Fans were briefly hopeful of a reunion between Scott and Catherine when a cosy FaceTime call between the exes went viral, but Scott's decision to jet off to Love Island USA and then join The Games put paid to it. Earlier this year, the pair almost came face-to-face on Love Island All Stars. Catherine appeared on the show but Scott pulled out of talks at the last minute but insisted it was nothing to do with her signing. But he later told ex Islander Whitney Adebayo: "Obviously me and Cat... if we were put in that situation again, then you never know what could happen. 'But I feel like if we were put in that situation again and it didn't work and I went a different way, I feel like I just I would just get hated for it.' 7 Scott has already filmed Perfect Match Credit: Instagram
