USA Today15-03-2025
The Creighton Bluejays (24-9) and the No. 5 St. John's Red Storm (29-4) meet Saturday in the Big East Championship Game at Madison Square Garden in New York City. Tip-off is scheduled for approximately 6:30 p.m. ET (FOX). Let's analyze BetMGM Sportsbook's college basketball odds around the Creighton vs. St. John's odds, and make our expert college basketball picks and predictions.
The second-seeded Bluejays ousted the 2-time defending champion UConn Huskies in the semifinals Friday, winning 71-62 as 4-point underdogs, with the Under (138.5) cashing. It was a nice bounce-back game after Creighton was nearly shown the door by lowly DePaul in a narrow 85-81 OT win in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Creighton has won 4 in a row, going 3-1 against the spread (ATS) during that span. The Over has cashed in 3 straight, although the Under hit against UConn in their last matchup.
The top-seeded Red Storm picked up a 79-73 win over the Bluejays Feb. 16, while Creighton hung on as a 6.5-point underdog in New York City, with the Over (143.5) cashing. Swingman RJ Luis Jr. had 23 points and 14 rebounds in the victory.
Creighton won 57-56 against St. John's in the first meeting in Omaha as a 1-point favorite, with the Under (151.5) connecting on New Year's Eve. C Ryan Kalkbrenner contributed 16 points, 9 rebounds, and 5 blocked shots in the victory.
St. John's has won 8 in a row, covering 6 of the past 7 games. The Under is on a 4-1 run for the Johnnies, too.

Creighton vs. St. John's picks and predictions
Prediction
St. John's 73, Creighton 65
St. John's (-300) will cost you 3 times your potential return, and that's way too much risk for not nearly enough reward. These teams split during the regular season, and Creighton (+240) is always dangerous in the postseason.

ST. JOHN'S -6.5 (-115) is worth playing lightly in what is essentially a home game at Madison Square Garden. If this game were played at a true neutral floor, things might go another way for Creighton +6.5 (-105).
The Red Storm have covered both games in this conference tourney, and they're 6-1 ATS in the past 7 games.
Creighton has split against the spread in the first 2 games of this season, nearly losing outright as a double-digit favorite against DePaul Thursday. The Bluejays are just 3-4 ATS in the past 7 games.
LEAN UNDER 140.5 (-115).
The O/U has split 3-3 in the past 6 games for the Bluejays.
The Over cashed in the last meeting Feb. 16 at MSG, but the Under easily hit in the first matchup Dec. 31 in Omaha.
St. John's has cashed the Under in 4 of the past 5 games, and the total has gone low in 3 in a row on a neutral floor for the Johnnies.
UNDER 140.5 (-115) is worth playing very lightly.

Amari Williams signs two-way contract with Boston Celtics

The Boston Celtics signed second-round pick Amari Williams to a two-way contract on Friday, according to the NBA's transaction wire. The Celtics now have three players on two-way contracts for next season, with Williams joining fellow second-round pick Max Shulga and the recently acquired RJ Luis Jr. Boston drafted Williams with the 46th overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft out of Kentucky. The 23-year-old big man played just one season for the Wildcats after starting his college career at Drexel, but he stuffed the stat sheet throughout his year in Lexington. Williams averaged 10.9 points, 8.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists, and 1.2 blocks over his 36 games -- all of which were starts. Williams is a bit older, but he's bringing a lot of upside to the Boston organization. He's got good size at 7-feet and 260 pounds, and was widely considered the best passing big man in this year's draft thanks to his excellent court vision. Williams has a great motor and can get down court in transition, and also has the ability to run the break thanks to his elite passing abilities. Williams also brings a lot of defensive potential to the table, with a 7-foot-6 wingspan that will help him protect the rim. At Kentucky, he had a knack for blocking a shot and starting the fastbreak for the Wildcats. He's going to have to tap into all of his potential to stay in Boston, as Williams will likely spend most of the season in the G League with the Maine Celtics. But he could potentially carve out some playing time in the NBA, given Boston's precarious situation in its frontcourt heading into the 2025-26 season. The Celtics now have 18 players on their offseason roster after signing Williams. A dozen players on are on guaranteed deals, while Jordan Walsh and Neemias Queta are both on partially guaranteed contracts. Hayden Gray is on the squad on an Exhibit 10 contract, while Williams, Shulga, and Luis Jr. are all on two-way deals. With the offseason departures of Kristaps Porzingis and Luke Kornet, and with Al Horford still mulling his future, Boston is a bit thin in the frontcourt. The Celtics' big-man group currently consists of Queta, Luka Garza, Xavier Tillman, and Chris Boucher, with Williams looking to work his way into the mix on his two-way deal.

Do the Boston Celtics need Baylor Scheierman to step up next season?

Baylor Scheierman is entering his second season in the NBA. The Creighton product showed flashes of his playmaking and scoring ability toward the end of the Boston Celtics' 2024-25 regular season. However, he struggled when shooting the ball during his recent stretch of games at Las Vegas Summer League. With the Celtics in the early stages of a retooling process, Scheierman is expected to earn significant minutes within Joe Mazzulla's rotation. He will provide playmaking, rebounding and a three-level scoring threat off the bench. However, with that larger role and increase in minutes will come expectations to prove that he can hold his own at the NBA level. During a recent episode of the "How 'Bout Them Celtics?" podcast, hosts Jack Simone and Sam LaFrance broke down why Scheierman must take a developmental leap in the upcoming season. The duo also discussed what the Celtics could do if Scheierman continues to struggle from the field between the start of the season and the February 2026 trade deadline. Who is RJ Luis Jr., and why did the Boston Celtics trade for him?

Who is RJ Luis Jr., and why did the Boston Celtics trade for him? The Celtics elected to send vet reserve forward Georges Niang into the Utah Jazz cap space along with a pair of second round draft picks last week, taking back only the undrafted two way wing in the deal in order to make it the minimum trade requirements in the NBA's collective bargaining agreement. In so doing, the front office also created a bit of a log jam with their own two way players, eventually deciding to cut ties with more veteran two way forward Miles Norris with No. 57 2025 draft pick Max Shulga also signed to a two way deal and No. 46 2025 draft pick Amari Williams yet to sign any deal with Boston. The folks behind the "NESN" YouTube channel put together a clip from their "Hold My Banner" podcast that takes a closer look at the trade for Luis Jr. Check it out below!
