Nutrition and lifestyle hold the key to overcoming obesity risk

Obesity is a growing concern in India, linked to a rising burden of diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular diseases. Yet, recent research by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research–Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CSIR-CCMB), Hyderabad, reveals that the genetic patterns associated with obesity in Europeans do not necessarily translate to Indians. The findings emphasize that lifestyle choices and targeted nutrition might be more effective than genetics-based interventions for Indian populations.
Indians tend to exhibit more central or abdominal obesity—excess fat around the waist—even at lower body mass index (BMI) levels than Europeans. This pattern is more strongly linked to metabolic risks such as insulin resistance and cardiovascular disease. The research shows that polygenic risk scores (PRS), which use genetic data to predict obesity risk, work more accurately in people of European ancestry but are less predictive for those of South Asian ancestry, including Indians. This difference suggests that environmental and lifestyle factors play a greater role in influencing obesity in Indians.
The role of lifestyle in weight management
The study tracked individuals with varying glucose levels for nearly two decades, allowing researchers to observe how lifestyle interventions affect people with a high genetic risk of obesity. Interestingly, individuals genetically predisposed to obesity initially responded well to lifestyle modifications such as structured exercise and dietary changes. However, once these interventions stopped, weight regain occurred more rapidly than in people with lower genetic risk. This underlines an important point: while genetics may influence how easily one gains or loses weight, sustainable lifestyle habits are critical to long-term success.
Nutrition: The first line of defense
For Indians, where diets are often rich in refined carbohydrates and low in protein, dietary improvements can significantly alter obesity outcomes. Experts suggest focusing on nutrient-dense whole foods, increasing dietary fiber, and moderating simple carbohydrate intake. Traditional Indian diets already include pulses, vegetables, and spices with known metabolic benefits, but the growing popularity of processed foods and sugary drinks has shifted nutritional patterns in recent years. Adopting balanced meal plans that emphasize seasonal produce, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats can help counteract genetic predispositions.Specific nutrient supplementation may also prove beneficial. For example, deficiencies in vitamin D and omega-3 fatty acids are prevalent in India and have been linked to metabolic disorders and weight gain. Addressing such deficiencies through diet or supplements can support metabolic health and weight management, especially for individuals at high genetic risk.
Exercise and physical activity
While nutrition forms the foundation, physical activity determines how effectively calories are utilized and stored. Regular aerobic exercise, resistance training, and even moderate-intensity daily activities like walking or cycling can improve insulin sensitivity and prevent fat accumulation around the abdomen. For genetically susceptible individuals, incorporating consistent physical activity into daily life is more effective than temporary workout plans that are abandoned after initial weight loss.
Early interventions for lasting impact
One of the most powerful findings of the global research effort, which included Indian genetic data, was the ability to predict future obesity risk in children as young as five years old. Early detection means lifestyle and nutritional interventions can start sooner, preventing excessive weight gain before it becomes a chronic issue. For children at risk, promoting outdoor play, limiting screen time, encouraging balanced diets, and educating families about healthy cooking can create lifelong healthy habits.
A holistic approach
The takeaway from the CSIR-CCMB study is clear: while genetics provides part of the picture, it is lifestyle and nutrition that ultimately determine outcomes. For Indians, whose genetic predisposition differs from Europeans, tailored lifestyle solutions—like nutrient-specific supplementation, diet quality improvement, and long-term fitness habits—may yield better results than relying solely on genetic predictions.
As Dr. Giriraj Ratan Chandak of CSIR-CCMB notes, 'Lifestyle, diet, and nutrition might play an equal or even greater role than genetics in predicting obesity in Indians.' For individuals and healthcare policymakers alike, the focus should be on creating environments and programs that encourage sustainable nutrition and active lifestyles, rather than treating obesity as an unavoidable genetic destiny.

India-Britain FTA, announced on Thursday, will allow tariff-free entry for British food and drink, such as chocolate, gingerbread, sweet biscuits, soft drinks and non-alcoholic beer. Another FTA with four EU nations also indicates that chocolates will be cheaper to enter India. This is bad news for the health of India's children. Cheap Britain-made food products, which are likely to be high in fat/sugar/salt (HFSS), could now flood the Indian market and fuel the rapidly growing market of ultra-processed food products. It means consumption of unhealthy diets would increase when India is grappling with a surge in childhood obesity, diabetes and other diet-related NCDs. Aggressive marketing of HFSS products is fuelling obesity. Between 2006 and 2019, the per-capita consumption of such products rose by nearly 50 times. Earlier this year, Narendra Modi launched an anti-obesity campaign, asking people to reduce oil consumption by 10%. This must now be backed by strong regulation on marketing, including mandatory front-of-pack warning labels on HFSS food products. Further, a clearly worded law must restrict advertisements of HFSS foods. In the 1990s, Mexico signed Nafta with the US. Without safeguards, it led to an explosion of sugary drinks and processed foods, ushering in a wave of obesity and diabetes that haunts the country to this day. Mexican health experts call it their 'Nafta moment'. India can't afford to repeat this regulations are not only focusing on labelling but also on marketing restrictions, especially to protect children. While Britain exports HFSS food products to India, it uses traffic light labels, restricts HFSS marketing, and will enforce a 9 PM TV and online ad ban from October. The EU is strengthening its food labelling and marketing restrictions, especially for children. Britain aims to reduce children's exposure to unhealthy food promotion. Chile, Mexico, Brazil and Israel have implemented strong front-of-pack warning sharp contrast, India has no mandatory warning label, and the food industry enjoys the freedom of advertising, partly because of weak laws that are open to interpretation. Cartoon mascots or health claims on unhealthy food products, sponsorships of school or sporting events by food/drink product companies, and unrestricted celebrity endorsements of HFSS products are common occurrences. This is not just a policy gap, it's an equity why the hesitation in India?The science is clear. The PM has spoken. Yet, regulatory action is still caught between industry resistance and bureaucratic delay. The question isn't whether we can do it, it's whether we will. The Supreme Court has also spoken about food labelling and its glaring gaps as the judges asked: 'You all have grandchildren? What are you feeding them? The packets have no information.'The PM has given a moral nudge. The apex court has given a legal one. The Economic Survey has offered the economic rationale. Technically, GoI's dietary guidelines for Indians make this case strong the country needs the health ministry to act boldly. Because if India doesn't lead on this now, it will be our children who pay the price, bite by bite. Mysuru: By 2030, India will need to feed 1.7 billion people, which is a staggering demand that poses a major challenge to the nation's food supply chain, said V Prakash, former director of CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute (CFTRI). Prakash noted that the daily demand includes consumption at homes, events, meetings, and weddings. "No single food production unit can meet this demand. We need thousands of factories, especially as consumer preference is rapidly shifting towards ready-to-eat food," he said. "Food technology, research institutions, and scalable production units will be critical in addressing this need," Prakash said. Highlighting a growing concern, HS Savitri, retired professor of biochemistry, warned about the detrimental impact of viruses on crop yields. "Viruses are reducing agricultural productivity by 10% to 30% annually, leading to losses estimated at $15 billion per year," she stated. She emphasised the need for scientific interventions to protect key crops like bananas, paddy, and tomatoes. For instance, the banana virus alone caused a Rs 350 crore loss between 2007 and 2010, while paddy viruses result in an annual loss of around $1 billion. The event also witnessed the launch of a CFTRI-developed 'Protein Slice'—a plant-based product. Additionally, CFTRI signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Good Food Institute to foster collaboration in research and development of sustainable food technologies. CFTRI director Sridevi Annapurna Singh was also present at the event.
