Christian Pulisic, his father and Tim Weah rail against ‘evil' US soccer critics

The Guardian4 days ago
Tim Weah, Christian Pulisic and his father, Mark, delivered searing takes on ex-US men's national team players who criticized the team during their recent run of bad form, with Weah calling the pundits 'evil'.
The trio made the comments in the latest epsiode of the Pulsic docuseries on Paramount+, the final episodes of which were released this week. The new episodes cover the national team from the 2024 Copa América, in which the US underperformed by exiting at the group stage, up through the 2025 Nations League final, where the US lost against Panama and Canada en route to a disappointing fourth-place finish in a competition they had won in each of the previous three editions. Following that tournament, Pulisic kicked off a media firestorm when he announced that he would skip the 2025 Gold Cup, the team's last competitive tournament before next year's World Cup on home soil, due to fatigue after a second-straight 50-game season with Milan.
Pulisic's decision elicited strong critiques from ex-US players such as Clint Dempsey, Landon Donovan, Tim Howard, Charlie Davies, Jimmy Conrad and Herculez Gomez.
'In my opinion [they] disrespected me in a lot of ways, and completely forgot about what I've done for this national team for 10 years,' Pulisic said in the docuseries.
The series also includes segments focused on Pulisic's personal life, and the role his family plays within his inner circle. His father, Mark, is a former professional soccer player, and he spoke up forcefully for his son.
'These [pundits] want clicks, social media, 'subscribe to my channels,' 'listen to my podcasts' or whatever. I think they should look in the mirror and look at their last performances for the national team before they start talking shit,' he said. 'It's jealousy. People want to be in his shoes, and they'll find any reason to bring him down. But Christian doesn't give a shit what anyone says.'

Christian also repeated a retort he used earlier this year, in an appearance on CBS Sports' Call it What You Want podcast, which had been heavily critical of his decision to withdraw from the Gold Cup
'I'd say the most annoying thing, and for me the biggest cop-out of all time, is when all pundits say 'they didn't want it,' 'they didn't have the heart,' 'back in our day we would fight and we would die on the field,'' he said, insisting again that national team results affect him deeply.
The most scathing retort, though, came from Weah.
'I think those guys are chasing checks, and for me I just feel like they're really evil,' he said. 'They've been players, and they know what it's like when you're getting bashed. Those are the same guys that'll turn around and shake your hand and try to be friendly with you at the end of the day. Don't get me wrong, I respect all of them. They were players I looked up to. But quite frankly, the guys before us didn't win anything either … Christian himself has had a better career than every single one of the guys that speak negative on us.'
Pulisic finished last season as one of Milan's best players in a season when the team won the Supercoppa Italia but lost in the Coppa Italia final, lost in the knockout round of the Champions League, and finished eighth in the Serie A table. The team will not play in European competition this year, with Pulisic missing time in preseason due to an ankle injury.

Nepo baby influencer with over 526K followers has a VERY famous dad... do YOU know who it is?

Sometimes you find your passions through your parents. And Ava Raine - born Simone Alexandra Garcia Johnson - is a professional wrestler just like her very famous father. You might have heard of him: he goes by 'The Rock.' Ava was born to Dwayne Johnson and his ex-wife Dany Garcia in 2001. And at just 23 years old, she has become a huge name in American wrestling just like her iconic dad, grandfather Rocky Johnson, and great-grandfather Peter Maiva. Being born into wrestling royalty through her dad and getting a business mindset from her mother - who became the first woman to ever own a major sports league - Ava was set up for success from the beginning. So when an injury in 2019 stopped her from attending New York University for undergraduate studies, she took it as a sign to pursue her dreams of wrestling instead. Ava was accepted into the WWE in 2020 and made her debut on stage two years later. But after Schism - the faction Ava aligned herself with - lost a match in 2023 and it began to fall apart, Ava made the career decision to switch from in the ring to behind the scenes. Starting off as an assistant, she worked her way up and became the youngest General Manager of NXT in history at just 22 years old. By 2024, she created the NXT Women's North American Championship, launching the first-ever secondary women's title in WWE. And Dwayne wasn't just proud - he said Ava's interest in wrestling actually saved their relationship. 'I had [Ava] when I was young, in my 20s,' The Rock said on The Pivot podcast in 2023. 'So when I had [Ava], I was flying by the seat of my pants. I was wrestling full-time, I started transitioning into movies full time, I had so much s**t going on. 'I like to say that me and [Ava] grew up together, but we had a relationship where I was always gone, and we tried to keep it together. 'Now, years later, as she becomes a pro wrestler, it's actually brought us closer together.' Dwayne credits pro wrestling to mending his relationship with his daughter who had to grow up mostly in his absence due to his thriving career He explained that when she came to him about wanting to get into pro wrestling, it helped them spend more time together and understand one another more. Dwayne is considered one of the best professional wrestlers of all time. He is a 10-time WWE world champion, a two-time Intercontinental Champion, a five-time Tag Team Champion, and the winner of the 2000 Royal Rumble. He was the sixth Triple Crown Champion in WWE history. He was also named the Most Popular Wrestler of the Year in both 1999 and 2000 as well as Wrestler of the Year in 2000. And although Ava - who is also an influencer and has over 526,000 followers - still has many ways to go before even coming close to her father's legacy, it's clear she's using her nepo baby title to pave her own path in the wrestling world she inherited.

Antonio Senzatela likely returning to mound for Rockies vs. D-backs

August 17 - The last time Colorado right-hander Antonio Senzatela pitched, Aug. 1, his start lasted less than an inning. The next day he was placed on the 15-day injured list with a blister on his right middle finger, but plans call for him to be back when the Rockies wrap up a four-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sunday afternoon in Denver. Senzatela (4-14, 7.34 ERA) is expected to be activated from the IL to make his 22nd season start of the season. Nabil Crismatt will make his first appearance of 2025 -- and first as a member of the Diamondbacks -- and just the second start of his career to go with 113 relief appearances. The Rockies have won the past two games after dropping the series opener on Thursday night. Saturday night they scored six times in the eighth to rally for a 10-7 win. Senzatela has struggled most of the season, but things seemed to turn around when he beat the Minnesota Twins with seven solid innings on July 19. But in his next two starts, he gave up a total of 14 runs over 4 2/3 innings. Sunday will mark Senzatela's 24th appearance and 20th start against Arizona, a team he has faced more than any other in his career. He is 4-9 with a 5.61 ERA against the Diamondbacks. Colorado has won four of its past five games after an eight-game losing streak, and Hunter Goodman has been a big reason why. The 25-year-old All-Star catcher has hit safely in 11 of 13 games this month, and six hits were home runs. He blasted a 449-foot homer in Friday night's 4-3 win, and he leads the Rockies with 25 home runs. "He hits the ball a long way," Colorado interim manager Warren Schaeffer said. "He's just a strong guy that is having a really good year. His timing is very good. He doesn't seem like he's slowing down late in the year, which is a very good thing for him, catching as much as he has for the first time in his career." Crismatt, like Senzatela, has faced Sunday's opponent more than any other in his career. The right-hander is 0-1 with a 5.14 ERA in 15 relief appearances against the Rockies. Crismatt's only major league start came while pitching for San Diego on April 10, 2022. The Diamondbacks signed him to a minor league deal a week ago after his release from the Philadelphia Phillies. He appeared in 19 games for Philadelphia's Triple-A affiliate, Lehigh Valley. Crismatt pitched two scoreless innings for Arizona's Triple-A affiliate, Reno, before getting the nod to start Sunday in place of Anthony DeSclafani, who was put on the 15-day injured list with inflammation in his right thumb. The Diamondbacks came to Denver with a chance to strengthen their chances for an NL wild-card berth but have lost two games after winning 8-2 on Thursday night. They are 5 1/2 games out of the NL's third and final wild-card spot. "It's a hard league, and there are no gimmes here," Arizona outfielder Jake McCarthy said. "Obviously, we want to keep climbing [in the standings]." --Field Level Media

Back in first place in NL West, Dodgers aim to sweep rival Padres

August 17 - The Los Angeles Dodgers have dealt with plenty of injuries this season, along with stretches on the schedule with play below expectations, and yet something about the San Diego Padres brings out the best in the World Series champions. The Dodgers will try for a three-game sweep of their Southern California rivals when they host the Padres on Sunday. After they held on for a 3-2 victory on Friday, the Dodgers turned six walks issued by Dylan Cease over the first two innings into a 6-0 victory over the Padres on Saturday, while regaining sole possession of first place in the National League West. "Obviously wins are great. We're going to sleep well tonight, be ready to (sweep) tomorrow," Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said. "I'm just happy that we're playing better baseball. It just seems like we're playing clean baseball. We're minimizing the walks, taking walks, not making outs on the bases, and converting outs when we need to." In Sunday's series finale, Los Angeles is set to send right-hander Tyler Glasnow to the mound. Glasnow (1-1, 3.08 ERA) has not won any of his past 10 starts and yet has a 2.34 ERA over his past six outings and has averaged 7.5 strikeouts over his last four. In six career appearances (three starts) against the Padres, he is 0-0 with a 2.63 ERA. The Dodgers' offense scored five times in the first two innings Saturday and did it on just one hit. At the same time, the Dodgers recorded three of their first four outs on defense when catcher Will Smith threw out Fernando Tatis Jr., Manny Machado and Xander Bogaerts trying to steal second base. The Dodgers are now 7-2 against the Padres this season and have a chance at the sweep after entering the series with a 10-14 record since the All-Star break. The Padres will counter with right-hander Yu Darvish (2-3, 5.61), a former Dodger who has made just seven season starts because of right elbow inflammation. Darvish is 5-5 over 15 career starts against Los Angeles, with a 2.27 ERA. Darvish had a 1.72 ERA against the Dodgers in three regular-season starts last season then went 1-1 in a pair of playoff appearances, while allowing three runs over 13 2/3 total innings. After the Padres entered the series with manager Mike Shildt praising his team's relentless offense, the Padres have scored two total runs in two games after they averaged 6.2 runs in five consecutive victories before the series. On Saturday, San Diego had six hits to five for Los Angeles and lost by six runs. "Listen, that was an odd game," Shildt said, when asked about three base stealers thrown out in the first two innings. "We had a plan, and they made some plays. And when you're down, it hurts a little bit more. But you know, it's an odd game when you outhit a team and lose 6-0." The Padres did not use left-handed hitters Gavin Sheets or Ryan O'Hearn in the starting lineup the past two games against left-handed starting pitchers, with both possibilities to play Sunday against Glasnow. --Field Level Media
