Iran upholds death penalty for rapper Amir Tataloo

Naghmeh Maghsoudlou, the sister of prominent Iranian Amir Tataloo, announced on Friday that the Supreme Court in Iran had officially upheld his death sentence, in a post on her Instagram account.
Earlier, Asghar Jahangir, spokesperson for Iran's judiciary, said on April 16 that Amir Tataloo was facing several convictions, including a 10-year prison sentence for "encouraging corruption and immorality," in addition to a previous five-year sentence issued by Branch 9 of Tehran's First Criminal Court for "insulting sanctities."

Jahangir noted that the five-year prison sentence was overturned by the Supreme Court after the Tehran Public Prosecutor's Office appealed, and the case was returned to a parallel court (the Sixth Branch), which subsequently issued a death sentence based on Article 262 of the 2013 Islamic Penal Code and Article 514 of the same law, for "insulting the Prophet."
The 36-year-old famous underground artist Tataloohad been living in Istanbul since 2018, when Turkish authorities turned him over to Iran in December of last year.
Elham Rahimifar, Tataloo's lawyer, said without providing details that the defendant received a combination of "short and long" prison sentences.
