Malaysia, China Strengthen Aviation Ties With Twin Hub' Cooperation

Barnama23-04-2025

PUTRAJAYA, April 23 (Bernama) -- Malaysia and China today agreed to strengthen their aviation ties by accelerating the development of a 'twin hub' cooperation between Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport, in pursuit of a smoother and more efficient ASEAN-China Air Silk Road.
Transport Minister Anthony Loke said the cooperation aligned with the shared interests of both nations and is expected to enhance regional air logistics capacity and facilitate closer economic ties.
'Both sides are committed to a comprehensive aviation cooperation and will strengthen the technical exchange of civil aviation expertise, enhance aviation logistics cooperation between KLIA and Zhengzhou Xinzheng International Airport to realise the common vision of a seamless Air Silk Road between ASEAN and China,' he said in a statement today.
Loke said that to ensure the smooth implementation of this initiative, both parties agreed to establish a dedicated working mechanism and plan to organise a high-level forum focused on air logistics cooperation that brings together government and industry stakeholders to explore practical collaboration.
Earlier, Loke received a courtesy call from the Vice-Governor of Henan Province, Sun Shougang and his delegation at the Transport Ministry here.
The delegation included several aviation experts from the Henan Province, which has a population of nearly 100 million - three times the size of Malaysia - and possesses significant economic weight and potential in developing aviation hubs.
The Vice-Governor's visit follows closely after the state visit to Malaysia by Chinese President Xi Jinping, providing a timely opportunity for both sides to follow through on key areas outlined in the recent Malaysia-China Joint Statement.
Loke said Malaysia welcomes greater engagement and cooperation with Chinese provinces and cities, especially those like Henan, which possess strong economic capabilities and strategic positioning in key areas such as transport, logistics and regional connectivity.
'We look forward to building a new model of mutually beneficial cooperation together. In particular, against the backdrop of growing uncertainties in global trade, both parties expressed strong confidence in the steady progress of Malaysia-China relations,' he said.

Bursa Malaysia up in early trade, but trade tensions cap gains

KUALA LUMPUR: Bursa Malaysia extended gains early Thursday, supported by soft US inflation data that eased tariff worries, as traders looked for updates on China-US trade talks. The FBM KLCI rose 2.24 points, or 0.15%, to 1,526.08 as of 9:18 am, after opening 3.87 points higher at 1,527.71. Overnight, the S&P 500 declined 0.27% to end the session at 6,022.24 points. The Nasdaq declined 0.50% to 19,615.88 points, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average ended essentially unchanged at 42,865.77 points. Inter-Pacific Research noted that while optimism over a potential U.S.-China trade deal remains, tariff concerns persist after President Trump threatened unilateral tariffs on certain countries, ahead of the July end to the 90-day tariff pause — likely keeping market sentiment cautious for longer. The research house said the uncertainties could again drag on market performance, although the FBM KLCI could instead trend within a tight band until there are more developments on the tariff front. As it is, the selling pressure is milder due to the continuing wait-and-see stance, and this could provide some near-term stability to the key index. 'With the latest tariff developments, the key index could surrender some of yesterday's gains as the 1,525 may remain a major resistance. 'Below, the supports are at 1,520 points and 1,516 points, respectively. The resistance, on the other hand, are at 1,530 and 1,535 points respectively,' Inter-Pacific said. Among the gainers on Bursa Malaysia, PETRONAS Gas rose 26 sen to RM17.96, Petron added 10 sen to RM3.68, Datang gained six sen to RM1.91 and Kelington climbed five sen to RM3.64. Nestle slid 20 sen to RM75.36, Carlsberg lost 10 sen to RM19.36, DKSH fell eight sen to RM5.11 and Hong Leong Bank declined six sen to RM19.46.

Ringgit improves against greenback amid weaker US economic data

KUALA LUMPUR: The ringgit continues to strengthen against the greenback on Thursday, amid weaker United States (US) economic data, an analyst said. At 8 am, the local currency inched up to 4.2305/2405 against the dollar versus the yesterday's close of 4.2345/2370. Bank Muamalat Malaysia Bhd chief economist Dr Mohd Afzanizam Abdul Rashid said the US Dollar Index (DXY) slid 0.47 per cent to 98.631 points as the US inflation rate came in lower than expected. The US Consumer Price Index (CPI) came in at 2.4 per cent in May against consensus estimates of 2.5 per cent. The core CPI print was at 2.8 per cent versus 2.9 per cent in the consensus survey. "The short-term US Treasury fell as hope for interest rate cuts has gained momentum with the two-year yield dropping seven basis points to 3.95 per cent. "It appears that expectations for rate cuts would be in the spotlight. The current US Federal Reserve (Fed) chairman's term ends next May. US President Donald Trump is likely to appoint a Fed chief who aligns with his agenda, that is, to prescribe further monetary easing," he told Bernama. On that note, the DXY is likely to linger below 100 points for quite some time, which would benefit emerging market currencies, including the ringgit, he added. Mohd Afzanizam also expects the ringgit to trade on an upward trend in the range of RM4.22 and RM4.23. At the opening, the ringgit traded lower against a basket of major currencies. It depreciated against the Japanese yen to 2.9344/9415 from Wednesday's 2.9187/9207, weakened versus the British pound to 5.7399/7535 from 5.7166/7200 and fell vis-à-vis the euro to 4.8693/8808 from 4.8426/8454 previously. Meanwhile, the local currency traded mostly lower against its ASEAN peers. It inched up against the Indonesian rupiah to 260.1/260.8 from 260.4/260.6 at Wednesday's close and was unchanged against the Philippine peso at 7.57/7.59. However, the local note slid versus the Singapore dollar to 3.2953/3033 from 3.2925/2947 at yesterday's close and declined against the Thai baht to 12.9949/13.0333 from 12.9729/9870 previously. - Bernama

First China bishop appointed under Pope Leo

ROME, June 12 — The Vatican announced yesterday the first appointment of a Chinese bishop under Leo XIV, signalling the new pope's support for a controversial accord on nominations struck by his predecessor with Beijing. The Holy See expressed 'satisfaction' at the recognition by China of the appointment of Joseph Lin Yuntuan as auxiliary bishop of Fuzhou, capital of the southeastern Fujian province. The pope made the nomination on June 5. 'This event represents further fruit of the dialogue between the Holy See and the Chinese authorities and is an important step in the communal journey of the diocese,' it said in a statement. The Vatican and China's Communist leadership do not have formal diplomatic relations, as the Holy See recognises Taiwan while Beijing claims the self-ruled island as its own territory. But in a historic deal, they agreed in 2018 to allow both sides a say in the naming of bishops in China, which has about 12 million Catholics. The deal — whose text has never been made public — has drawn criticism within the Church, with some seeing it as allowing the Communist government a stranglehold over the country's Catholics. Yet as Pope Francis sought to make inroads for the Church in China, the deal was renewed several times, most recently in October 2024, for four years. Francis died on April 21 after 12 years as head of the world's 1.4 billion Catholics, and Leo was elected in a conclave of cardinals on May 8. Between the death of one pope and the naming of another, Beijing proceeded with the 'election' of two bishops in the dioceses of Shanghai and Xinxiang. Commentators have viewed that move as an attempt by the Chinese Communist Party to take advantage of the institutional vacuum in the Vatican to assert its authority over the Church in China. — AFP
