Pirates place OF Oneil Cruz on 7-day concussion list
The Pittsburgh Pirates placed outfielder Oneil Cruz on the seven-day concussion injured list on Wednesday following his collision in the outfield during a loss to the host Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night.
Center fielder Cruz, 26, ran into left fielder Jack Suwinski while attempting to catch Joey Ortiz's double in the fourth inning of Milwaukee's 14-0 victory. Cruz was removed from the game in the top of the sixth inning.
In a corresponding move, Pittsburgh recalled rookie outfielder Ronny Simon from Triple-A Indianapolis.
Cruz is batting .207 in 108 games with 18 home runs, 51 RBIs and a National League-leading 34 stolen bases in 38 attempts. The native of the Dominican Republic is in his fifth season with the Pirates since making his major league debut in October 2021 and has a career .237 average with 58 homers, 188 RBIs and 69 steals in 352 games.
Pittsburgh selected Simon, 25, off waivers from the Miami Marlins on June 2. The native of the Dominican Republic batted .234 (11-for-47) with five RBIs in 19 games for Miami this season.

Bengals players rush to Joe Burrow's aid after embattled rookie's late hit causes scuffle
As if the drama with his contract situation wasn't enough, Cincinnati Bengals rookie Shemar Stewart caused further issues with a late hit on superstar quarterback Joe Burrow on Wednesday. Stewart, a rookie first-round pick out of Texas A&M, was participating in 11-on-11 drills in training camp when he lost his footing. He subsequently fell into Burrow and knocked the quarterback down to the turf. Burrow's offensive line sprang into action - kicking off a scuffle which was caught on video. Fortunately, things ended up being relatively tame - with no punches thrown and the situation dying down quickly. But Stewart's actions did lead to some hurt feelings and anger from the offensive line. 'Just be smarter…great player, [but] that's all of our hopes and dreams right there,' veteran center Ted Karras told reporters. 'We've got to be better, too. That's on us.' 'Gotta protect No. 9 [Burrow]. Starts with me up front,' said right guard Lucas Patrick, per the Cincinnati Enquirer. 'I gotta play better and protect better, but you can't let No. 9 get hit.' Stewart's name has been capturing headlines throughout Cincinnati's pre-season, but maybe not for the reason Bengals fans may have hoped. He had a prolonged holdout with the team over his rookie deal negotiations, leaving mandatory minicamp due to the situation. Stewart even went so far as to return back to Texas A&M - working out in College Station as reports speculated he was potentially exploring a return to college football. But, eventually, Stewart and the Bengals came to an agreement on a four-year, $18.9million contract. When asked about his holdout stance, Stewart revealed the team was trying to re-structure his deal to allow the Bengals to void future guarantees. 'I'm 100% right,' he said in June. 'I'm not asking for nothing y'all (the Bengals) have never done before. But in y'all case, y'all just want to win arguments (more) than winning more games.' During his holdout, Stewart attended meetings but was not reporting to the field. Earlier this week, with his deal being signed in late July, Stewart did not report to training camp - irking team executive Duke Tobin. 'I think Shemar needs to be here,' Tobin told reporters. 'I'm not going to blame Shemar. He is listening to the advice he is paying for. 'I don't understand or believe or agree with the advice, but I'm not the one paying for it. If I felt we were treating him unfairly as it relates to all the other draft picks in this year's draft, then maybe it would be a different story. 'But we are not. I don't really understand where things are there.' Stewart did get his first NFL action last week when the Bengals played their first preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles. He recorded one tackle. The Bengals next take the field on August 18 when they travel to the Washington Commanders. Stewart recorded his first NFL tackle in the Bengals' first preseason game last week against the Philadelphia Eagles.

Serena Williams tipped for shock US Open comeback by former coach
Serena Williams has been tipped to make a shock comeback at the upcoming US Open by her former coach Rick Macci. During a remarkable career, Williams won 23 women's singles grand slams while adding 14 women's doubles title and two mixed doubles crowns at slams. She spent 319 weeks as world No 1 and racked up 73 WTA Tour singles titles before playing her final match as a 40-year-old at the 2022 US Open – losing to Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round. Her older sister Venus Williams is still competing, making headlines with her latest comeback last month where the 45-year-old competed at the Washington Open and became the second-oldest player in history, after Martina Navratilova, to win a WTA Tour singles match as she beat then-world No 35 Peyton Stearns 6-3 6-4 in her first match for more than 16 months. The seven-time grand slam singles champion has since been given a wildcard for women's singles event at the US Open, where she will compete for a record-extending 25th time when the tournament gets underway at Flushing Meadows on 24 August. And legendary coach Macci is now convinced that the 43-year-old Serena Williams will join her sister by coming out of retirement to compete alongside Venus in the women's doubles in New York. Posting on X (formerly Twitter), the 70-year-old Macci wrote: 'Asked if Serena will play doubles with Vee at the Open. My gut is probably [yes] because at the end of the day Serena can still play even though she has been away. 'Her serve is still one of the best on the planet and when she competes her mindset is like granite.' Serena Williams is widely seen as the greatest women's tennis player of all time (GOAT) although she does trail the controversial Margaret Court by one in terms of grand slam singles titles – 24 to 23. She helped transform the sport and was almost unbeatable in a spell from 2014 to 2016 where, in a span of eight grand slams, she won five of them, lost in two finals and was knocked out at the semi-final stage of the other. And Macci is adamant that no one even comes close to her in any debate about greatness. In an interview with Tennis 365, he explained: 'Serena's the GOAT and the best player of all time, and I don't think anybody is even in the passenger side when you talk about Serena.' The Williams sisters won 14 women's grand slam doubles titles together between 1999 and 2016 as they formed an unstoppable partnership. Macci coached them both in their younger years, from 1991 to 1995 at his tennis academy in Florida, and also weighed in on Venus Williams's comeback. 'Both her and Serena, as you saw from the movie King Richard, are both like my daughters,' Macci added. 'Especially Venus, because she was a little older and I spent more time with her. 'Listen, at the end of the day, she just loves to play. I saw the same smile and enthusiasm. She won that match [against Peyton Stearns in Washington], she's bouncing up and down like a human pogo stick. The same exact thing I saw at age 14, it was identical.'
