VM2026: 103 New Flight Routes Approved To Boost Global Connectivity

PUTRAJAYA, May 22 (Bernama) -- A total of 103 new flight routes, 29 increased flight frequencies and five chartered flights have been approved from various major countries in an effort to boost global connectivity in preparation for Visit Malaysia 2026 (VM2026).
Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the matter was disclosed during the meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Tourism and Culture (JKPK), which he chaired here today..
The JKPK chairman said the meeting viewed that a comprehensive campaign approach up to the international level must be implemented with the full support of the government in preparation for VM2026.
Among the outlined strategies include creating demand by empowering the Malaysia Truly Asia and Cuti-Cuti Malaysia brands, joint promotions with airlines and tour operators, as well as market segmentation approaches to attract high-profile visitors from around the world.
'The government is committed to driving the tourism sector as a key catalyst for the country's economic growth in line with the aspirations of Malaysia MADANI, particularly the thrust of Rebuilding the Economy.
'This sector not only contributes to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) but also creates job opportunities and enhances the country's competitiveness in the global market,' Ahmad Zahid said in a statement today.
He said the meeting was informed of seven iconic programmes that will be organised as major attractions for VM2026, namely the Malaysia Mega Sale, Malaysia Cultural Festival, Global Meet, World Tourism Day & Conference, Official Launch of VM2026, VM2026 Year-End Sale, and the VM2026 Countdown Celebration.
In addition, he said the meeting was also briefed on the Sustainable Tourism Programme through the Greening Protocol Initiative.
'Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) and the Selangor government will spearhead the implementation of the Greening Protocol, which encompasses low-carbon technology, green mobility, and the empowerment of urban green spaces. This aligns with the goal of positioning Malaysia as a world-class sustainable tourism destination,' he said.

This follows the latest development on the visa issue, with a United States (US) federal court judge ruling to grant a temporary restraining order (TRO) after an application was filed by Harvard, providing relief to over 6,800 international students there. The ministry said in a statement today that it was monitoring the developments of this issue closely through Education Malaysia Washington D.C. (EMWDC). 'The decision enables international students, including Malaysian students, to continue studying without interruption for the time being. 'The ministry and EMWDC have also reached out to related sponsors and US education officials. The ministry welcomes their commitment to work together to ensure the wellbeing of our students,' the ministry said. The MOHE also reminded students to update their optional practical training information and to be careful in all action involving immigration matters. 'For now, no Malaysian student has been reported to have encountered any problems or issues with their records with the Student and Exchange Visitor Programme (SEVIS) and any withdrawal of their visas,' the ministry said. It also recommended new students for Harvard's September 2025 intake to deal directly with the university and their sponsors to obtain the latest developments before making any further decisions. The ministry reiterated Malaysia's belief that cross-border higher education was an important platform to global talent development, knowledge exchange and strategic partnerships between countries. Telcos reassure customer privacy in MCMC data initiative

KUALA LUMPUR: Telecommunication companies (telcos) have reaffirmed their commitment to protecting customer data and privacy, following the use of mobile phone data (MPD) for official statistical purposes by the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC). U Mobile Sdn Bhd affirmed in a statement today that customer data and privacy are its top priority, with policies and processes in place to ensure any shared data is anonymised, aggregated and fully compliant with applicable data protection laws and regulations. Advertisement 'We are aware of the objectives of the initiative and are committed to working with MCMC in a manner that upholds the highest standards of data governance,' it said. It noted that when the company does share the MPD, at no point will personally identifiable information be shared or processed. U Mobile remains committed to safeguarding customer privacy and ensuring full regulatory compliance in all aspects of data management, it added. Meanwhile, Telekom Malaysia Bhd (TM) also clarified that the MPD submitted to MCMC is fully anonymised and does not contain any personally identifiable information. Advertisement Data submission is carried out under strict governance and security protocols, with full compliance to applicable company policies as well as national laws and regulatory requirements, it said in a statement. 'TM remains fully committed to safeguarding the safety and privacy of customer data with responsibility and integrity,' it noted. CelcomDigi Bhd said in a statement that it continues to work intently with MCMC to support the government's initiatives without compromising the integrity of customer data. 'When required, CelcomDigi will process requested data within our own secure environments and provide a limited sample on relevant fields comprising anonymised and aggregated output to the commission,' it said. YTL Communications Sdn Bhd also confirms compliance with MCMC's directive to submit mobile network usage records for the first quarter of 2025, in support of the government's recently approved mandate to use MPD for national statistics. 'In fulfilling this obligation, YTL Communications has taken rigorous steps to anonymise all data prior to submission. No personally identifiable information has been shared, and customer privacy remains our highest priority,' it noted in a statement. Maxis Bhd said that for this initiative, as requested by MCMC, there is no access to, processing of, or sharing of personally identifiable information at any stage, as the company places the priority on data privacy and security. 'All data is anonymised by Maxis and processed in an aggregated manner within a secure environment, in full compliance with the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (PDPA),' it said in a statement. On June 6, MCMC clarified that its collection of MPD from mobile network operators (MNOs) does not involve the access, processing or disclosure of any personally identifiable information. Halal Industry Among Key Growth Drivers In IMT-GT, BIMP-EAGA
By Engku Shariful Azni Engku Ab Latif and Nur Athirah Mohd Shaharuddin KUALA LUMPUR, June 8 (Bernama) – The rapidly-growing halal industry is among nine sectors that can trigger high economic growth in the Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) and the Brunei Darussalam-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines East ASEAN Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA). The other key sectors include sustainable agriculture and agribusiness; tourism; green and renewable energy (RE); the digital economy; transport and logistics; palm oil and downstream industries; and Islamic finance, according to International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) associate professor of economics, Dr Muhammad Irwan Ariffin. The marine and fisheries industries are exclusive to the BIMP-EAGA sub-region, he noted. He said the halal industry in both IMT-GT and BIMP-EAGA sub-regions holds strong global demand for halal food, cosmetics, finance and tourism. "It shares Islamic values across Malaysia, Indonesia, Brunei, southern Thailand and Mindanao, making it a strategic goal to develop IMT-GT as a global halal hub," he told Bernama. Turning to the agricultural sector, Muhammad Irwan said the combination of vast arable land and a tropical climate drives strong demand for high-value crops, organic farming, agro-processing and agribusiness value chains, which are essential for supporting rural economies. As for the digital economy, he said increasing internet access in rural areas across the sub-regions has driven the growth of e-commerce, fintech and digital skills development, alongside plans for smart cities and cross-border digital corridors. "The sub-regions, which are known for their rich biodiversity, natural parks, and cultural heritage, are increasingly focusing on eco-tourism, halal tourism, and cross-border travel circuits, supported by strategic initiatives such as the Visit IMT-GT Year 2023–2025 campaign,' he continued. "In the Islamic finance sector, the large Muslim population and underserved rural communities present opportunities for inclusive growth through shariah-compliant financial services that support the development of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) across the regions."
