Cal athletic director Jim Knowlton announces his retirement
Knowlton announced on Monday that he will step down officially on July 1.
Knowlton was in charge during a tumultuous time, dealing with COVID, the emergence of NIL and conference expansion that forced the Golden Bears to join the ACC after their longtime home in the Pac-12 fell apart.
Knowlton was named Cal's athletic director on May 21, 2018, and the Bears captured 10 national championships during his tenure and had more than 100 athletes compete at the two Summer Olympics during his tenure.
'It has been an incredible honor to serve at the University of California, Berkeley, the No. 1 public university in the country,' Knowlton said in a statement. 'The expectation of holistic excellence helps to drive everyone associated with the university, and our department is no exception. The combination of a world-class education, athletic excellence, an inclusive community, an awe-inspiring location and, most importantly, truly special people, make Cal a magnificent place to serve.'
The Bears didn't have as much success in the high-profile sports. The football program qualified for four bowl games in his seven seasons but hasn't had a winning record since 2019.
Knowlton hired two men's basketball coaches and neither one has had a winning season. He hired Mark Fox in 2019 and fired him after four seasons with a 38-87 record.
The program has shown some signs of improvement under Mark Madsen but has only a 27-38 record to show for it.
He also hired Charmin Smith to coach the women's basketball program in 2019. She had a losing record in each of her first four seasons before making progress the past two. The Bears went 19-15 in 2023-24 and then made the NCAA Tournament this past season, going 25-9 after losing in the first round.
UC Berkeley Chancellor Rich Lyons named current deputy athletic directors Jay Larson and Jenny Simon-O'Neill as the new co-directors of the program.

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — New York Jets cornerback Sauce Gardner sat out the team's joint practice with the Giants on Wednesday because of a sore calf. Gardner participated in practice Tuesday at the Jets' facility in Florham Park but wasn't spotted during the teams' session at the Giants' facility Wednesday. 'Sauce wasn't out (there) today,' coach Aaron Glenn said after practice. 'He had some calf soreness. We'll continue to evaluate him and see exactly where he's at.' Gardner has been one of the Jets' best players since being drafted fourth overall out of Cincinnati in 2022. He was the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year and was an All-Pro selection in his first two NFL seasons. The 24-year-old Gardner had a slightly off season, by his standards, last year but is still considered one of the league's elite cornerbacks. Gardner signed a four-year, $120.4 million extension through the 2030 season, making him the NFL's highest-paid player at his position. He also is the focal point of a new-look secondary for the Jets, who have Gardner and free-agent signing Brandon Stephens at cornerback, with Michael Carter as the nickelback and free-agent signing Andre Cisco and Tony Adams at safety. The Jets don't have another full practice before their preseason game against the Giants on Saturday night. Glenn declined to say whether he would play his starters in that game — 'The plan is the plan,' is all he would divulge — so it's unclear if Gardner would participate even if healthy. Typically, teams play their starters for a quarter or a half in the second game, using it as a warmup for the regular season while backups typically play the final preseason game. Rookie quarterback Brady Cook, an undrafted free agent out of Missouri, was back on the field after leaving practice Tuesday with an ankle injury after someone stepped on his foot. He didn't participate in team drills. 'Held him out, but I anticipate him playing this week,' Glenn said. 'So that's good.' Cook is one of just three healthy quarterbacks on the Jets' roster, with starter Justin Fields and Adrian Martinez. Minnesota Twins won't be sold, will remain under control of Pohlad family
The owners of the Minnesota Twins said Wednesday they will not explore a sale and the team will remain under family control. The Pohlad family instead says they have agreed in principle to take on minority investment from two different groups, just 10 months after announcing plans to sell the franchise. "After a detailed and robust process, our family will remain the principal owner of the Minnesota Twins," the family said in the statement. "To strengthen the club in a rapidly evolving sports landscape – one that demands strong partnerships, fresh ideas, and long-term vision – we are in the process of adding two significant limited partnership groups, each of whom will bring a wealth of experience and share our family values." The family has owned the team since 1984, when Carl Pohlad bought the team for $44 million from Calvin Griffith, and the Pohlad children inherited the Twins upon his death in 2009. Pohlad's grandson, Joe, is the team's executive chair. The Twins are valued at $1.5 billion, according to Forbes Magazine, which ranks 23rd out of 30 MLB teams. Their 2025 payroll sits at $142,762,022, with their highest-paid player this season being pitcher Pablo López, who is making $21.75 million. Minnesota is 56-63 and currently in fourth place in the American League Central.
