Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. goes multiplatform with crossplay and more

Digital Trends12-05-2025

Sunday's Virtua Fighter Spring Direct revealed a load of new information about upcoming games, including the as-yet-untitled Virtua Fighter 6 and Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O. The biggest news? R.E.V.O. is coming to Xbox Series, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2, with full cross-play support and rollback netcode, although the team stayed quiet on exactly when it will release.
According to Siji Aoki, the lead for legacy Virtua Fighter projects, 'I know we've kept you waiting, but our Steam release, Virtua Fighter 5 R.E.V.O., is finally coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2!' This is something fans have requested since the game first launched. 'To make your gameplay experience even smoother, the rollback functionality used in the Steam version will be supported on all platforms.'

In addition to the announcement that Virtua Fighter 5 is coming to more platforms, the team also teased more information about Virtua Fighter 6 and revealed the return of beloved character Wolf Hawkfield, redesigned with a bushy, Ganondorf-like beard and covered in tats. As Hawkfield strolled onto the stage, the in-game announcer referred to his return from a 'controversial retirement.'
'In previous Virtua Fighter games, the backstories and motivations of the characters weren't well known,' says new Virtua Fighter Project Producer Riichiro Yamada. 'This is one of the major differences between the previous games and our new game. Playing the new game will give you a much better sense of who the characters are, including their backstories and personalities.'
A behind-the-scenes look says the new Virtua Fighter project will borrow Ryu Ga Gatoku Studio's narrative prowess to flesh out the characters you know and love, including their origin stories. The studio is known for the Yakuza series, and the character designs for both new and returning characters will reflect elements of their backgrounds.
The Direct gave no clear release date for either game, but it demonstrated that both are well into development. It's a tease, but all fans can do for now is be patient until more information (and hopefully a release date) is revealed.

Nioh 3 brings open zones and ninjas in 2026

A third entry in the Nioh series was revealed at the PlayStation State of Play showcase. We got a good look at the gameplay ahead of its 2026 release, but there's a demo available now for you to test it out for yourself. Nioh was Koei Tecmo's take on the popular Souls-like genre of games, but with a distinctly Japanese twist. The first two games are each set in historical Japanese eras, and Nioh 3 is no different, with the trailer closing on the introduction of a young Tokugawa. This would place the game in the unstable Sengoku period. The only other plot details shared were that our protagonist is on a quest to become the next Shogun and is fiercely dedicated to defeating the yokai for a mysterious reason. Recommended Videos The announcement trailer was packed with high-speed and brutal action that set the original games apart from others in the genre. Monstrous and magical Yokai are heavily featured, but there are some new tricks up our sleeves to combat them. Chief among them is the new styles players will pick from: Samurai and Ninja. Samurai style will be familiar to past games, focusing on Arts, parries, and an aggressive playstyle. The new Ninja style focuses on dodges, taking advantage of elevation, and Ninjitsu techniques like Mist, which leaves an afterimage clone after attacking. You won't have to choose just one style, though. In Nioh 3 you will be able to swap back and forth between both styles on the fly. We see this in action as the samurai class parries blows before slipping into the Ninja form to leap away and attack from above with a ranged weapon. Where previous games were level-based, Nioh 3 now features wide open fields to explore, said to be filled with enemies, secrets, and challenges in something called 'The Crucible.' Nioh 3 will launch sometime in early 2026 and is currently only announced for PS5, but you can play the demo right now. Act fast, because the demo will only be up until June 18.

James Bond game 007 First Light gets first trailer

Sony's showcase had a pleasant surprise: the debut trailer for 007 First Light. The James Bond game — which has some definite Uncharted vibes — doesn't have a release date, but is slated to launch some time in 2026. And while it was announced at a PlayStation event, the debut trailer confirms it's coming to Xbox, PC, and the Switch 2 in addition to the PS5. The game appears to be an origin story, as players will follow a much younger version of Bond, at least compared to the films. Hitman developer IO Interactive announced that it was working on the franchise way back in 2020, so it's been a long wait to see the actual game in action. The announcement also comes at an interesting time for the franchise overall, which is now under the Amazon umbrella.

PlayStation reveals a new arcade-style fighting stick

PlayStation has announced Project Defiant, an arcade-style fighting stick that looks like it'll be perfect to use with the newly announced Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection. Sony teased the device during the State of Play on Wednesday before revealing more details in a blog post, which says the controller will let you wirelessly connect it to your PS5 or PC with PlayStation Link technology. Sony says the PlayStation Link offers 'ultra-low latency' connectivity, allowing for precise responses to button inputs and stick movement. There's also an option to plug the controller into your device with a USB-C cable. The controller comes with a digital stick that's custom-designed by Sony Interactive Entertainment, along with buttons that have mechanical switches, a touchpad similar to the one on a DualSense wireless controller, and interchangeable restrictor gates (square, circle, and octagon) for the stick. Project Defiant comes with a carrying case with a lever gap 'to keep the digital stick safe during transport.' Sony plans to release the controller in 2026 and will share more details about the device, including its official name, in the 'months ahead.'
