Motor racing-Hamilton given three-place grid drop for impeding Verstappen
MONACO (Reuters) -Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton will start Sunday's Monaco Grand Prix from seventh place after being handed a three-place grid drop for impeding Red Bull's Max Verstappen in qualifying.
Seven-times world champion Hamilton, a three-times Monaco winner, qualified fourth on Saturday but was then summoned to stewards.
They said in a statement that Ferrari told Hamilton Verstappen was on a fast lap and then that he was slowing down, when that was not the case.
Hamilton "expressed his displeasure at the incorrect message from the team immediately after the incident," the stewards reported.
"During the hearing, the fact of the team's incorrect message leading to the incident was accepted by the driver of Car 44 (Hamilton)."
Although the impeding was due to the team's error, stewards said Hamilton should still be penalised.
"The fact that the radio message was the cause of the impeding does not amount to a mitigating factor," they ruled. "We therefore impose the standard penalty of a drop of three grid positions."

Cricket-Pakistan face fifth bowler dilemma ahead of West Indies decider
FILE PHOTO: Cricket - ICC Men's Champions Trophy - Pakistan Press Conference - National Stadium, Karachi, Pakistan - February 18, 2025 Pakistan's Mohammad Rizwan during the press conference REUTERS/Akhtar Soomro/File Photo (Reuters) -Pakistan captain Mohammad Rizwan acknowledged a dilemma over the fifth bowler and said they would take a late decision on their team combination for Tuesday's series decider following their defeat in the second one-day international on Sunday. Pakistan, who won the opening ODI by five wickets, posted a competitive 171-7 in 37 overs in a rain-truncated match but West Indies prevailed by five wickets to draw level in the three-match series. Pakistan's part-time duo of Saim Ayub and Salman Agha conceded a combined 66 runs in seven wicketless overs as West Indies cruised home. "You could say our fifth bowler gave away too many runs but in recent years, Salman Agha and Saim Ayub have both bowled well for us," Rizwan said after the match. "Saim didn't have the best day today, but he performed well in the T20Is. That's just part of the game." Rizwan said they could not read the conditions and several rain delays did not help their cause. "Honestly, the weather forecast has been completely different from expectations, and it's hard to read. "We're keeping our options open and will finalise the XI after assessing the conditions." Pakistan had won the preceding Twenty20 series 2-1. (Reporting by Amlan Chakraborty in New Delhi; Editing by Clarence Fernandez)

Cricket-Coaches trust Australia's hard-hitters, says David
Cricket - Fourth One Day International - South Africa v Australia - SuperSport Park Cricket Stadium, Centurion, South Africa - September 15, 2023 Australia's Tim David in action REUTERS/Siphiwe Sibeko (Reuters) -Australia's T20 batters are backed by their coaches to go "all guns blazing" and will likely continue their attacking ways, middle order blaster Tim David said. David produced a sparkling 83 off 53 balls to guide Australia to a 17-run win in the series-opener against South Africa on Sunday and a record ninth victory in succession. "We've been playing together as a group now for a while, so there's not a great deal of instruction from the coaches,' said player-of-the-match David in Darwin. "They trust the players. "We trust ourselves to go out there and we understand the game situation. We make decisions on the fly because that's the nature of T20 cricket. "I think if you'd watched our guys bat over the last period, wherever they bat around the world and when they play for the Australian team, it's close to all guns blazing. "You can probably expect to see that a little bit from our team. That's how we think we play best." David has been in top form, racking up 215 runs in his past three T20I innings, which includes a 37-ball century against the West Indies in St Kitts last month. His hot streak has revived queries on whether he might consider reviving an ODI career that lasted only four matches against South Africa in 2023. However, David was not included in the ODI squad for South Africa and poured cold water on the idea of a return in the near future. "That's not part of the plan for me," David said. "To be honest, the things I've been building towards is the T20 World Cup next year and the major tournaments that are leading up to that. "Honestly, I don't operate much further than the next day ahead." Australia will look to seal the three-match T20 series against South Africa with another win in Darwin on Tuesday. Rugby-Crusaders to show off new roofed stadium in Christchurch 'Super Round'
(Reuters) -Super Rugby Pacific champions Canterbury Crusaders will host the return of the competition's 'Super Round' in Christchurch next season and show off their new home stadium. Super Round, which sees all teams descend on a single city for a weekend of matches, was scrapped last season following the demise of the Melbourne Rebels, who hosted previous editions at their home stadium. The concept's return will see the Crusaders open the 11th round of the 2026 season on the Anzac Day weekend (April 24-26) at the new One New Zealand stadium. Anzac Day is a public holiday celebrated in Australia and New Zealand, commemorating military service members who fought and died during wartime. The One New Zealand stadium, which boasts a roof and 25,000-seat capacity, has long been in the making following a 2011 earthquake that devastated Christchurch and ruined the Crusaders' old home ground, Lancaster Park. The Crusaders have played out of Rugby League Park since the earthquake. "This event is bigger than rugby, it's a celebration of One NZ Stadium coming to life," Crusaders boss Colin Mansbridge said in a statement on Monday. Super Rugby Pacific have yet to confirm the full draw for the weekend but the Queensland Reds will play the Auckland Blues and the ACT Brumbies face the Wellington Hurricanes on April 25.
