International Road Federation flags safety non-adherence in road projects in India
In a statement, International Road Federation (IRF) expressed concerns over the growing number of fatalities and severe road crashes occurring in and around road construction zones across India.
"Across numerous active construction sites, IRF-India Chapter has observed a lack of advance warning signs for diversions or lane closures, absence of reflective tapes, barricades or cones, poorly marked or unlit diversions, which is extremely dangerous, resulting in serious accidents, especially at night," India Chapter (IRF-IC) president Akhilesh Srivastava said.
Further, he said that there is no deployment of flagmen and marshals and inadequate speed calming measures in these zones.
This has led to a disturbing spike in head-on collisions, wrong-side driving and fatal crashes, all of which are preventable, Srivastava added.
He said a recent tragic incident on the Bengaluru-Chennai Expressway is a stark example. A fatal head-on crash involving two vehicles occurred due to an unmarked diversion caused by ongoing roadworks.
"The lack of signage and lane separation led one vehicle onto the wrong side of the carriageway, resulting in the death of both occupants," Srivastava said
IRF-IC demanded immediate action from all stakeholders, including mandatory compliance with IRC Work Zone Safety Guidelines for all National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), State Public Works Departments, and private road contractors.
Safety audits should be conducted before, during, and after construction works, IRF-IC said, adding that stakeholders ought to also focus on public disclosure of work zone plans, diversion maps and timelines.

Agency: PTI New Delhi, Aug 7 (PTI) The government has taken various measures to check road mishaps, Union Minister Nitin Gadkari said, while seeking the participation of the general public to eradicate this 'social problem". The minister also said 100 road safety audits have been conducted across various locations in the country, and he will hold a press conference to share the details of it after the Parliament session gets over. 'Road accident is a social problem. I accept that the success we got in other areas, we could not get here (road accidents)," the Minister for Road Transport and Highways said, addressing an industry event in the national capital. Around 5 lakh accidents occur in India (annually) and around 1.80 lakh people lose their lives to such incidents, Gadkari said. 'I request the public to follow traffic rules and drive safely. If you see a red light, stop. Wear a helmet while driving two-wheelers," he said, replying to a question about whether there are ways to reduce the number of accidents in the country. As part of efforts to improve road safety, the government took several steps. It brought 6 airbags in four-wheelers, an electronic braking system in two-wheelers, and thirdly increased the penalty. 'But fourth is related to the public. Public awareness should be there," he noted. The minister also said that projects worth around Rs 2 lakh crore have already been awarded, and the target is to take the number to Rs 5 lakh crore before March next year. The aim is to award projects worth Rs 10 lakh crore annually in the future. Citing a study, Gadkari said the cost of logistics has also come down from 16 per cent earlier on account of improved road infrastructure in the country. Lanka Court settlement allows release of Chinese EVs
Agency: PTI Last Updated: Colombo, Aug 7 (PTI) A settlement reached here on Thursday at the Court of Appeal would see Sri Lanka Customs releasing nearly 1,000 Chinese BYD brand electric vehicles held for alleged faulty representation of their engine power. The importer John Keells CG Auto had petitioned the court seeking redress as the Customs continued to hold 991 cars. The importer was accused of making declarations stating a lower motor capacity – 100 kw against actual 150 kw so that they would be charged a lower customs tariff. The Customs tariff for a 100 kw is four million Sri Lankan rupees lower than for a 150 kw powered motor. In the settlement reached at the court, the Customs agreed to the car importer's proposal to provide a bank guarantee for the tariff discrepancy of 3 billion Sri Lankan rupees to get the release of cars pending investigations. At least six of the cars were to be detained to facilitate testing of actual motor capacity. Customs officials had detained the consignment on July 28. Earlier, in a statement, John Keells Group had denied any deliberate misleading of Sri Lanka Customs to lower the excise tax. 'The motor power of these vehicles has been verified through test reports issued by BYD in China and further certified by an independent testing body", the company clarified. When Sri Lanka allowed car imports in February this year for the first time in five years, the BYD gained popularity with a big demand for their electric and plug-in hybrid cars. By May, within 3 months, they had gained almost 90 per cent of the electric car market and over 10 per cent of all car sales. Rolls-Royce mulls setting up MRO for AE2100 engine operated by Indian Air Force
New Delhi, Aug 7 (PTI) Aerospace major Rolls-Royce on Thursday said it is exploring potential opportunities for setting up maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) capability in India for the AE2100 engine operated by the Indian Air Force to support and sustain the fleet, aligned with the India-UK free trade pact. As the India-UK Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement (CETA) comes into effect, Rolls-Royce said it plans to accelerate its aerospace and defence engagement with India. 'Among its areas of focus is the exploration of a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) capability in India for the AE2100 engine, to support and sustain the fleet," the company said in a statement. Sharing the company's plans, Rolls-Royce Senior Vice President – Defence (India and South-East Asia), Abhishek Singh said with its strong legacy in India, the firm is looking forward to strengthening its in-country capabilities alongside the strong framework for bilateral collaboration set out by the CETA and the UK-India Vision 2035 roadmap. 'We are exploring potential opportunities to set up an MRO for the AE2100 engine operated by the Indian Air Force, and to further scale the partnership for assembly and testing for the multi-role transport aircraft (MTA) programme," he added. Singh further said Rolls-Royce sees India not just as a growth market, but as a strategic partner for co-development, innovation and capability-building. 'This next chapter, under the defence industrial roadmap, is about creating the right frameworks to deepen a partnership built on trust, talent, and technology," he added. Rolls-Royce had recently announced its intent to double its sourcing from India over the next five years. The company is exploring expansion of its supply chain base in India across its verticals, including for complex aero engine parts, in line with India's strategic focus on greater participation in global supply chains. The company also aims to bring more of its global technical expertise closer to the point of need, while also engaging and nurturing the local talent and supplier ecosystems, through its collaborative partnerships in India. Welcoming the India-UK CETA, Singh said, 'We see this as a launchpad for future growth with our Indian partners across both defence and civil aerospace."
