World Cup 2026 needs thousands of volunteers in Foxboro and Boston
The Boston Host Committee announced Monday that it is in need of thousands of volunteers for different roles in Boston, Foxboro, and other locations in Massachusetts during the tournament.
Gillette Stadium, known as "Boston Stadium" for the tournament, is hosting seven matches. That includes the quarterfinal match that is scheduled for July 9, 2026.
"Boston is one of the most historic and influential cities in America and hosting the FIFA World Cup will be another landmark moment for our city," said Mike Loynd, CEO, FIFA World Cup 26 Boston. "We're thrilled to invite our community to be part of history and show the world the pride, passion and spirit that define Boston."
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and be able to commit to eight shifts between June 11 and July 19, 2026.
Anyone who wants to volunteer can visit the World Cup website to apply.
The teams who will play at Gillette Stadium during the 2026 World Cup will be determined later this year.
Ticket information is also starting to be released for the tournament. Tickets will be released in waves, and the first phase will open on September 10.
A recent poll from Axios Boston found that a majority of their readers think that Massachusetts hosting the World Cup is a good idea. The poll found 56% of readers like the idea, while 43% are not on board.
"Supporters said it could be a great opportunity for Boston to shine, to show Boston as a world class city," Mike Deehan of Axios Boston told WBZ-TV. "The negative side of it was kind of what you would expect. Traffic, too many people, too many tourists. A lot of people skeptical that the MBTA would be able to get people from some of these fan expositions events in Boston proper down to Foxboro."
The first group play match of the World Cup at Gillette Stadium is scheduled for June 13, 2026.

Aug. 8 (UPI) -- The Boston Celtics signed coach Joe Mazzulla to a multi-year contract extension, the team announced Friday. Mazzulla went 182-64 over his first three seasons. "We are very excited that Joe has agreed to extend with the Celtics," Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said in a news release. "He understands the job and has a passion for the Celtics that is only rivaled by our most die-hard fans. "He's worked hard and accomplished amazing things in his first three years as a head coach -- including averaging over 60 wins per season and winning the 2024 NBA Championship. Joe is a gifted leader who brings a consistent commitment to learning, improving, and maximizing each day we get to compete for the Boston Celtics." Mazzulla, 37, led the Celtics to a 61-21 record and No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference last season. They lost to the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals, ending their shot at a title defense. "This is truly a blessing," Mazzulla said. "I would not be here without my faith, my wife, and my children. We are thankful for the partnership with our ownership groups, Brad Stevens' mentorship, and the support of our staff. "Most importantly, I am grateful for the players I have been able to coach the past three seasons. I look forward to competing for the Celtics and the city of Boston." By KRISTIE RIEKEN AP Sports Writer Alex Bregman homered against his former team for a second straight game and Carlos Narváez added a three-run shot to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 14-1 win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night. Dustin May (7-8) scattered five singles across six scoreless and struck out eight in his second start since a trade from the Dodgers. The loss drops the Astros into a tie with Seattle for the AL West lead after the Mariners beat the Orioles 1-0 for their eighth consecutive win Tuesday. Bregman, who is playing in Houston as a visitor for the first time this week, hit another two-run home run Tuesday night after hitting one in his first at-bat in Monday night's 7-6 loss. He spent his first nine seasons with the Astros before signing with the Red Sox this offseason. His homer came after Narváez slugged a three-run shot as Boston scored five runs with two outs in the sixth to push the lead to 7-0. Houston starter Spencer Arrighetti (1-3) struggled with command in his second start since missing four months with a broken right thumb. He allowed just one hit and two runs, but walked a career-high five in five innings. The bases were loaded with one out in the third when Arrighetti plunked Trevor Story on the hand to make it 1-0.
