World Cup 2026 needs thousands of volunteers in Foxboro and Boston

CBS News2 days ago
The World Cup is coming to Massachusetts in 2026, and the host committee is seeking volunteers to help with the festivities surrounding the signature event.
The Boston Host Committee announced Monday that it is in need of thousands of volunteers for different roles in Boston, Foxboro, and other locations in Massachusetts during the tournament.
Gillette Stadium, known as "Boston Stadium" for the tournament, is hosting seven matches. That includes the quarterfinal match that is scheduled for July 9, 2026.
"Boston is one of the most historic and influential cities in America and hosting the FIFA World Cup will be another landmark moment for our city," said Mike Loynd, CEO, FIFA World Cup 26 Boston. "We're thrilled to invite our community to be part of history and show the world the pride, passion and spirit that define Boston."
Volunteers must be at least 18 years old and be able to commit to eight shifts between June 11 and July 19, 2026.
Anyone who wants to volunteer can visit the World Cup website to apply.
The teams who will play at Gillette Stadium during the 2026 World Cup will be determined later this year.
Ticket information is also starting to be released for the tournament. Tickets will be released in waves, and the first phase will open on September 10.
A recent poll from Axios Boston found that a majority of their readers think that Massachusetts hosting the World Cup is a good idea. The poll found 56% of readers like the idea, while 43% are not on board.
"Supporters said it could be a great opportunity for Boston to shine, to show Boston as a world class city," Mike Deehan of Axios Boston told WBZ-TV. "The negative side of it was kind of what you would expect. Traffic, too many people, too many tourists. A lot of people skeptical that the MBTA would be able to get people from some of these fan expositions events in Boston proper down to Foxboro."
The first group play match of the World Cup at Gillette Stadium is scheduled for June 13, 2026.

Boston Celtics sign coach Joe Mazzulla to contract extension

Aug. 8 (UPI) -- The Boston Celtics signed coach Joe Mazzulla to a multi-year contract extension, the team announced Friday. Mazzulla went 182-64 over his first three seasons. "We are very excited that Joe has agreed to extend with the Celtics," Celtics president of basketball operations Brad Stevens said in a news release. "He understands the job and has a passion for the Celtics that is only rivaled by our most die-hard fans. "He's worked hard and accomplished amazing things in his first three years as a head coach -- including averaging over 60 wins per season and winning the 2024 NBA Championship. Joe is a gifted leader who brings a consistent commitment to learning, improving, and maximizing each day we get to compete for the Boston Celtics." Mazzulla, 37, led the Celtics to a 61-21 record and No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference last season. They lost to the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference semifinals, ending their shot at a title defense. "This is truly a blessing," Mazzulla said. "I would not be here without my faith, my wife, and my children. We are thankful for the partnership with our ownership groups, Brad Stevens' mentorship, and the support of our staff. "Most importantly, I am grateful for the players I have been able to coach the past three seasons. I look forward to competing for the Celtics and the city of Boston." The Celtics will face the Memphis Grizzlies in their preseason opener Oct. 8 in Memphis.

Bregman, Narváez home runs power Red Sox to 14-1 win over Astros

By KRISTIE RIEKEN AP Sports Writer Alex Bregman homered against his former team for a second straight game and Carlos Narváez added a three-run shot to lead the Boston Red Sox to a 14-1 win over the Houston Astros on Tuesday night. Dustin May (7-8) scattered five singles across six scoreless and struck out eight in his second start since a trade from the Dodgers. The loss drops the Astros into a tie with Seattle for the AL West lead after the Mariners beat the Orioles 1-0 for their eighth consecutive win Tuesday. Bregman, who is playing in Houston as a visitor for the first time this week, hit another two-run home run Tuesday night after hitting one in his first at-bat in Monday night's 7-6 loss. He spent his first nine seasons with the Astros before signing with the Red Sox this offseason. His homer came after Narváez slugged a three-run shot as Boston scored five runs with two outs in the sixth to push the lead to 7-0. Houston starter Spencer Arrighetti (1-3) struggled with command in his second start since missing four months with a broken right thumb. He allowed just one hit and two runs, but walked a career-high five in five innings. The bases were loaded with one out in the third when Arrighetti plunked Trevor Story on the hand to make it 1-0. The Red Sox made it 2-0 when Roman Anthony, who hit a solo homer in the eighth, scored on a sacrifice fly by Masataka Yoshida. Wilyer Abreu hit an RBI double in the seventh and a two-run double in Boston's four-run eighth that made it 12-0. The Red Sox added two runs in the ninth with outfielder Chas McCormick on the mound. The home run by Narváez that padded the lead in the sixth inning. Bregman's home run Tuesday was his 96th in the regular season at Daikin Park. Houston RHP Hunter Brown (9-5, 2.51 ERA) opposes RHP Walker Buehler (7-6, 5.40) in the series finale Wednesday night.

Voluntourism Spots That Drive Measurable And Sustainable Impact

Voluntourism has often been dismissed as feel-good travel wrapped in good intentions but shallow outcomes. However, when structured well, it can create real, measurable impact for both communities and volunteers. Voluntourism should not be about checking boxes or posing with orphaned children or for pictures at a beach cleanup. In a post-pandemic world marked by economic fragility and climate urgency, voluntourism must evolve or be left behind. What to Look for When Choosing a Voluntourism Destination When choosing a voluntourism destination, it is essential to focus on programs that are locally led and community-driven, ensuring the initiatives are designed, managed, and evaluated by those who directly benefit from them. The most effective opportunities provide measurable outcomes through transparent reporting, data collection, and, ideally, independent evaluation. Volunteer roles should be structured to build local capacity by transferring skills, knowledge, or resources that remain after the program ends, rather than creating dependency. Continuity is equally important; projects should operate with a long-term vision, rather than changing focus with each new volunteer group, as sustained engagement supports deeper, more sustainable progress. Ethical safeguards are non-negotiable and responsible programs that avoid unvetted child-focused placements, orphanage tourism, and any activity that displaces local jobs. Finally, credible organizations will offer thorough orientation and cultural context training, ensuring volunteers are well-prepared to understand local needs, challenges, and expectations. A truly responsible voluntourism program will be transparent about its partnerships, funding, and the specific role that volunteers play in its broader strategy for long-term impact. Top 2025 Voluntourism Destinations Effective voluntourism is grounded in community ownership, with programs designed and led locally to ensure relevance and sustainability. Success is measured through transparent reporting and tangible outcomes, with volunteer roles focused on building skills and capacity rather than creating dependency. In contrast, harmful models such as orphanage tourism, short-term projects lacking follow-through, or initiatives that displace local workers can often undermine communities, erode trust, and cause lasting harm despite good intentions. This article presents 4 destinations that redefine what it means to give back responsibly, based on data, longevity, and impact. While Tanzania is globally recognized for its world-class safaris, it also offers opportunities for travelers to engage directly with local communities. In Arusha and Zanzibar, structured volunteer programs connect participants to initiatives in education, healthcare, childcare, women's empowerment, sustainable agriculture, construction, and animal welfare. These placements are pre-arranged with all necessary logistics—accommodation, orientation, and local support, ensuring volunteers can focus on meaningful contribution rather than navigating administration. Ghana offers a similarly structured approach to voluntourism, with programs designed to deliver measurable impact in local communities. Opportunities range from supporting medical clinics and public health initiatives to assisting in schools and vocational training centers. Belize's southern coast is home to reef systems under increasing ecological stress. On a private island 16 miles off Placencia, marine-based volunteer programs involve participants in data collection and species monitoring to track the health of coral and surrounding habitats. Work typically includes surveying reef conditions, recording biodiversity, and contributing to long-term datasets used by local conservation agencies. Aruba has introduced a Volunteer Time Off program that integrates community service via curated activities such as organized beach cleanups, coral reef restoration projects, and mangrove rehabilitation efforts. These initiatives are designed in partnership with local environmental groups or resorts to address specific conservation priorities on the island. Voluntourism has the potential to be far more than a travel trend and it can be a mechanism for social, environmental, and economic resilience when designed with integrity. The destinations highlighted here demonstrate that community ownership, measurable outcomes, and ethical safeguards are not optional, but they are the baseline for real impact. In an era where global challenges demand practical solutions, the voluntourism sector must hold itself to higher standards. For volunteers, that means asking the right questions, seeking transparency, and valuing substance over photo opportunities. When those conditions are met, voluntourism can evolve from feel-good travel into a force for measurable, long-term change. Disclosure: I was hosted by the Aruba Tourism Authority in my capacity as a sustainability professional to observe the island's ecotourism initiatives.
