AI firm founded by Austrian ex-Chancellor Kurz reaches unicorn status

Euronews18-02-2025

Tel Aviv-based cybersecurity firm Dream, founded by Kurz alongside entrepreneur Shalev Hulio and cyber expert Gil Dolev, announced a funding round worth $100 million (€105m) on Monday, valuing the company at $1.1bn (€1.05bn).
The Series B round was led by Bain Capital Ventures, while additional investors included Group 11, Tru Arrow, Tau Capital and Aleph.
Founded in January 2023, Dream develops AI-driven cyber defence solutions for governments, seeking to identify and eliminate threats before they materialise.
In 2024, Dream amassed more than $130m (€124m) in annual sales to governments and national cybersecurity organisations.
"Sophisticated cyber-attacks on our critical infrastructure are increasing in both prevalence and complexity," Sebastian Kurz, co-founder and President of Dream, said in a statement on Monday.
'During my time as Prime Minister I saw first hand how these attacks can cause real human damage, and have the capacity to disrupt society at large. By founding Dream, we are on a mission to empower nations against what is the defining national security concern of our era," he added.
The project marked a new step for the ex-Chancellor after he was forced to give up his government role in 2021, over claims linked to corruption allegations.
A new age for cybersecurity
The new funding round for Dream accelerates the development of the firm's Cyber Language Model (CLM) and will also fuel the company's expansion into additional markets.
The firm noted that it would "focus on markets where cyber threats continue to pose significant national security challenges".
Enrique Salem of Bain Capital Ventures will join Dream's board of directors, along with Shlomo Yanai, who currently serves on the board of Philip Morris.
They will join current board members Dovi Frances, Michael Eisenberg and the founders of the company.
AI needed to tackle AI attacks
Experts warn that, as cyber criminals launch more sophisticated attacks using AI technology, governments and firms must employ defensive AI strategies.
For example, AI is now being used to create realistic phishing emails or deepfakes to encourage individuals to share sensitive information.
The total cost of cybercrime, according to an industry group cited by the WEF, jumped from $3tn (€2.9tn) in 2015 to $6tn (€5.7tn) in 2021.
Statista estimates that this total will reach $15.6tn (€14.9tn) by 2029.
Organisations spent approximately $200bn (€191bn) globally on cybersecurity products and services in 2024, according to McKinsey.

Kering Eyewear acquires Italian lens manufacturer Lenti

Kering Eyewear continues to expand its operations to strengthen its supply chain. The eyewear division of French luxury group Kering has made its third acquisition in less than three months, purchasing Lombardy-based optical lens manufacturer Lenti from Italian group Safilo. The companies did not disclose the value of the transaction. Kering Eyewear describes the deal as 'a key milestone in its industrial development strategy,' providing the opportunity 'to add internal capabilities for the production of Italian-made sun lenses known for exceptional quality, technological innovation, and superior performance,' the company stated in a press release. Entrepreneur Marco Negri founded Lenti in 1996 in Brembate di Sopra, in the province of Bergamo, in partnership with the Safilo Group. The company employs around 100 people and has developed advanced technologies for graphic lenses. It specializes in molding and surface treatments that protect and enhance vision across various applications, including sunglass lenses, visors, lighting components, and protective elements used in the automotive and motorcycle industries. 'We have valued Lenti's products for many years and are proud to welcome the company to Kering Eyewear. It brings an additional area of expertise to our industrial platform of manufacturing capabilities, factories, and, most importantly, outstanding talent,' said Roberto Vedovotto, founder and CEO of Kering Eyewear. Since its creation in 2014, the eyewear division has focused on designing, developing, and selling eyewear, relying on a network of carefully selected production partners. However, the company's rapid growth in recent years—generating €1.6 billion in revenue in 2024—has led it to enhance control over its supply chain by acquiring some of its suppliers. In April, Kering Eyewear acquired Italian manufacturer Visard, which produces optical and sunglass frames using injected plastic, and took a minority stake in Italian company Mistral, known for its acetate frame designs, with the option to complete a full acquisition by 2030.

Trump hails US-China tariff talks a 'total reset'

Senior US and Chinese officials met in Geneva on Saturday, May 10, in a bid to de-escalate a trade war sparked by President Donald Trump's sweeping tariff rollout and fueled by Beijing's strong retaliation. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer conferred with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng in the first such talks between the world's two largest economies since Trump slapped steep new levies on China last month. Trump praised the "very good" discussions and deemed them "a total reset negotiated in a friendly, but constructive, manner." He said in a Truth Social post Saturday evening in Washington, We want to see, for the good of both China and the US, an opening up of China to American business." He added: "GREAT PROGRESS MADE!!!" The discussions are expected to continue Sunday in Geneva. Shortly after 9:30 am on Saturday morning, Bessent, Greer and around a dozen more US delegates marched through the lobby of Geneva's luxury Intercontinental hotel, ignoring journalists' requests for comment before ducking into waiting cars and speeding off. The Chinese delegation left from another five-star hotel, the President Wilson on the shores of Lake Geneva, with large police contingents escorting the two convoys through the city, blocking all other traffic on their routes. The talks were then held in the sumptuous 18 th -century "Villa Saladin" overlooking Lake Geneva. The former estate was bequeathed to the Swiss state in 1973, according to the Geneva government. Tariffs imposed on the Asian manufacturing giant since the start of the year currently total 145%, with cumulative US duties on some Chinese goods reaching a staggering 245%. In retaliation, China slapped 125% levies on US goods, cementing what appears to be a near trade embargo between the world's two largest economies. Trump signaled on Friday that he could lower the sky-high tariffs on Chinese imports, taking to social media to suggest that an "80% Tariff on China seems right!" "The president would like to work it out with China.... He would like to de-escalate the situation," US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told Fox News on Friday. Trump's press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, clarified that the US would not lower tariffs unilaterally, adding that China would need to make concessions as well. In any case, a move to that level would be a symbolic gesture, since the tariffs would remain prohibitively steep. Beijing has insisted that the United States must lift tariffs first and vowed to defend its interests. Bessent has said the meetings in Switzerland would focus on "de-escalation" and not a "big trade deal." The head of the Geneva-based World Trade Organization, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, said on Friday she welcomed the talks, calling them a "positive and constructive step toward de-escalation." A commentary published by China's state news agency Xinhua also noted that "The contact in Switzerland is an important step in promoting the resolution of the issue."
