After Anna University sexual assault verdict, AIADMK alleges cover-up, asks: ‘Who is sir?'

Indian Express2 days ago

In a landmark verdict that drew praise and political ire alike, a special women's court in Chennai on Monday sentenced Gnanasekaran, a biryani vendor and known DMK supporter, to life imprisonment for the brutal sexual assault of a 19-year-old student at Anna University. The case, which has ignited emotional public discourse since December, has now escalated into a full-blown political face-off between Tamil Nadu's ruling DMK and opposition AIADMK.
Gnanasekaran, found guilty on 11 charges including sexual assault, rape, kidnapping, and criminal intimidation, had earlier pleaded for leniency citing familial responsibilities. His appeal was rejected by the court, which instead endorsed the prosecution's case and commended the Tamil Nadu Police for an 'exceptional and expeditious' investigation concluded within five months. But the court's ruling has not quieted the storm.
Leader of the Opposition and AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami (EPS) took to social media shortly after the verdict, raising what he called 'unanswered questions' in the First Information Report (FIR), particularly the mention of a mysterious 'Sir' the convict allegedly referenced during the assault. EPS accused the DMK government of shielding higher-ups.
'Despite DMK's attempts to protect their man, people's voices—from the streets to social media—ensured justice,' EPS posted on X. 'Yet, justice remains incomplete. Who is the 'Sir' mentioned in the FIR? Why was he left out of the probe?'

He concluded with a politically charged promise: 'Once AIADMK returns to power, the truth about 'Sir' will come out.'
Chief Minister MK Stalin responded swiftly and sharply, defending the state police's handling of the case and accusing the opposition of exploiting a young woman's trauma for electoral mileage. 'The High Court praised our fair and swift investigation,' Stalin said in a post on X. 'The Women's Court has commended the police. This verdict has silenced those who pretend to care about women's safety but are in fact seeking political gain from a tragedy.'

The case, which shook Tamil Nadu's student community and led to days of protests at campuses across the state, took place on December 23.
According to court documents, Gnanasekaran forcibly entered the Anna University campus, attacked a male friend of the survivor, then sexually assaulted and filmed the young woman, using the footage to later intimidate her.
His conviction, while welcomed by women's rights advocates and student groups, has exposed deep political fissures in the state. While DMK leaders frame the ruling as proof of administrative competence and legal resolve, AIADMK insists that the most powerful player in the crime remains unnamed—and unpunished.
The term '#WhoIsThatSir' has since trended on Tamil social media.

DMK, AIADMK look to youth to run booth committees

Chennai: Both AIA and DMK are focusing on involving youth in booth committees to use technology to reach out to voters and to counter actor Vijay's perceived appeal especially among young voters. Tired of too many ads? go ad free now The leadership has stipulated that its booth committee members should be below the age of 45, while the DMK is roping in youth wing members. Tamil Nadu has 68,467 polling booths for 6.37 crore voters. Party general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami is firm on the age limit and the AIADMK headquarters is vetting the committees; district secretaries have submitted the details with photographs of the members. The party had 19 members per committee during general elections; this time it's aiming for nine. "Previously, elders also formed part of the committee. Now the IT wing is carefully examining the members to ensure compliance," said a district secretary. In some places, the party is reportedly facing challenges in finding youth willing to be members. The DMK plans to have 10 to 12 members per committee and inclusion of youth wing members is mandatory unlike in the past. A youth wing member from each booth will receive training in the effective use of social media. "The observers posted by the DMK headquarters for each assembly constituency are tasked with tweaking the composition of booth committees to make them effective," said a leader. Meanwhile, Vijay's TVK, which had a meeting for booth agents in Coimbatore in April, is planning another meeting in a different region to demonstrate its presence across the state. TVK functionaries also question whether the Dravidian majors can fill their booth committees. "These parties should display the strength of their members like our leader, Vijay," a TVK functionary said.

BJP delays census to reduce TN's seats: CM

Chennai: Chief minister M K Stalin said on Wednesday the BJP govt at the Centre delayed the census to 2027 only to undertake a delimitation exercise and reduce Tamil Nadu's representation in Parliament. Terming the move a 'betrayal,' Stalin alleged that by not opposing the BJP's plan to reduce TN's parliamentary representation, AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K Palaniswami has become an accomplice to the 'betrayal.' S talin levelled the charge after the Centre announced that the census will commence from March 1, 2027. Stalin said the census announcement was an open declaration of the BJP govt's conspiracy. "Indian Constitution mandates that delimitation must follow the first census after 2026. The BJP has now delayed the census to 2027, making their plan clear to reduce TN's parliamentary representation," he said in a social media post. Ever since the talks on delimitation commenced, Stalin has been alleging that southern states including TN are set to lose seats in the parliament while north Indian states would gain more seats. Stalin has been spearheading the demand for fair delimitation by launching a Joint Action Committee (JAC) on fair delimitation. "I had warned about this. It is now unfolding," Stalin said. Hitting out at EPS for aligning with the BJP, Stalin said, "Palaniswami is not just silent but complicit in this betrayal. It's now clear that he has surrendered to Delhi's domination." Saying TN is united on its demand of fair delimitation, Stalin demanded "clear answers from the Union govt" on the issue.
