
China private equity secondary deals to surge on rising supply, cheaper valuations
A private equity (PE) secondary trade refers to the buying and selling of PE fund portfolios or their direct shareholdings in private companies, allowing investors to exit their positions outside the typical investment cycle.
The steep discounts being offered by the selling funds are expected to attract buyers who have confidence in China's longer-term economic prospects, industry sources said. Many of the selling funds have to repay their own investors and are struggling to find trade buyers or float the assets on public markets due to economic headwinds and geopolitical risks.
Canada's Caisse de dépôt et placement du Québec (CDPQ), for example, which stopped making PE investments in China two years ago, is considering selling about $2 billion worth of assets via secondary trades, most of which are from China, said two people.
China-focused buyout fund CDH Investments is also aiming to raise a multi-asset continuation vehicle to allow some investors to cash out from its existing fund's portfolio, they said.
A continuation fund is a new investment vehicle created by a PE firm to transfer holdings of some existing investments, which allows investors to maintain or exit their stakes in the assets.
CDPQ declined to comment. A CDH spokesperson did not respond to a Reuters request for comment.
The people, who are familiar with the matter, did not wish to be identified as the talks are confidential.
A total of 731 secondary trades involving yuan-denominated funds were completed in the first half of 2025, hitting a record 77.3 billion yuan ($11 billion) and logging an 89% year-on-year growth, according to Chinese data provider ZERONE.
Data for secondary trades involving U.S. dollar-denominated assets in China is not publicly available, industry sources said.
It is a good time for investors who have a long-term view on China to buy quality assets on the cheap with reduced regulatory risks, global alternative asset investor LGT Capital Partners said in an industry insight white paper published in July.
"We expect the majority of capital we are going to deploy in China in the short to medium term to be via secondaries," Doug Coulter, LGT's Hong Kong-based partner and co-head of Asia Pacific private equity, told Reuters.
SWELLING SUPPLY
LGT announced in June that it was the co-lead investor in continuation vehicles worth a total of $500 million for a portfolio of 13 assets managed by China-focused venture capital fund IDG Capital.
LGT declined to disclose the discounts the assets were traded at.
Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC also invested in IDG's continuation vehicles, primarily buying shares of social media company Bytedance, said the two people.
GIC declined to comment. IDG did not respond to a Reuters request for comment.
Globally, secondary market deals have also hit record volumes, reaching $103 billion in the first half, according to a report by investment bank Jefferies, as the lack of capital distribution from IPOs and M&A deals fuels supply.
Quality China assets are being sold in the secondary market at 40%-50% discounts to net asset value (NAV), said Coulter. That compares with the roughly 10% to 20% discounts to NAV for U.S. assets in the secondary market, industry sources said.
The improved market sentiment in China should be conducive to PE secondary deals, industry sources said.
China's onshore benchmark CSI 300 is up 7% so far this year, while Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index is up 25%.
"We believe the sentiment of investors about China has generally improved," said Mingchen Xia, managing director and co-head of Asia investments at investment management and advisory firm Hamilton Lane.
He said that "the softened geopolitical tensions and largely settled tariff negotiations" by some major economies should give some comfort to investors.

Global beauty firms look to carve up Indian market as 'last bastion' of growth
CHENNAI: From Japan's Shiseido to France's L'Oreal, global cosmetics giants are doubling down on India, betting on the world's most populous nation as a key growth market for premium offerings while sales slow in developed economies. India's luxury beauty market is expected to quintuple to $4 billion by 2035 from $800 million in 2023, driven by its young, affluent, social-media savvy shoppers with rising disposable incomes, consulting firm Kearney and luxury beauty distributor LUXASIA said in a report. Luxury beauty makes up just 4% of the $21-billion beauty and personal care market, compared with 8% to 24% across top Southeast Asian countries and 25% to 48% in developed markets including China and the United States. That means there is plenty of room for growth. "India is the last bastion of growth for premium beauty," said Sameer Jindal, managing director for investment bank Houlihan Lokey's corporate finance business in India. "The Indian consumer is willing to experiment and try out new things." U.S. beauty giant Estee Lauder, home to the brands Clinique and MAC, expects a strong runway for expansion and long-term growth in India, even as it grapples with soft sales in the Americas and Asia-Pacific. "India today, within the Estee Lauder network, is looked at as one of the priority emerging markets," said country general manager Rohan Vaziralli, highlighting plans to initially target 60 million women in the nation of more than 1.4 billion. Homemaker R. Priyanka, based in the southern city of Chennai, said she was thrilled to have better access to Estee Lauder's Jo Malone London fragrance in India, as a benefit of the companies' efforts. "It is easier than asking someone (abroad) to get it for you every time," she added. While global beauty brands might have to modify some of their products for India, which bakes in sultry temperatures in summer and oppressive humidity at other times, they face little competition from homegrown brands. Kearney and LUXASIA identified only Forest Essentials and Kama Ayurveda as their major rivals, underscoring how domestic brands make up less than a tenth of luxury beauty sales. In the more established markets of China, Japan and South Korea by comparison, domestic brands account for a 40% share. "There is, of course, a premium perception gap between globally established brands and Indian brands," said Devangshu Dutta, founder of retail consultancy Third Eyesight. Global beauty giants' huge marketing budgets also give them an edge over domestic brands, other industry watchers said. WOOING INDIAN SHOPPERS Estee Lauder is studying online sales patterns to identify the smaller cities to target, such as Siliguri in West Bengal state, partnering with designers such as Sabyasachi Mukherjee, and launching products such as kohl, an eyeliner Indians favour. It has also invested in Forest Essentials, a brand with herbal ingredients, and in a programme offering funding to domestic beauty start-ups. This year France's L'Oreal said it was investing more in India and tapping into the "elevated beauty desires" of the nation's young, digitally savvy, empowered women shoppers to drive growth. It declined further comment. South Korea's Amorepacific, known for brands such as Innisfree and Etude, is trying to leverage the Korean beauty craze in India with products geared to the market. These include items for the popular "cleanser, serum, moisturiser, and sunscreen" beauty regimen, the country head, Paul Lee, said. Japan's Shiseido, with a history of more than 150 years, brought its NARS brand to Indian beauty retailer Nykaa's website this year, and plans to step up growth of its brands in the subcontinent. Global brands are very excited about India, where consumers are splurging more to stay on top of trends such as "cherry makeup", Nykaa co-founder Adwaita Nayar said, referring to a look featuring flushed cheeks, glossy lips, and soft pink eyes. Amazon, which has also been seeing a big boom in beauty demand in India, aims to identify emerging global trends and bring in more brands, said Siddharth Bhagat, director of beauty and fashion at the e-commerce company in India. Retailer Shoppers Stop, which also pioneers foreign labels, plans to open 15 to 20 beauty stores in each of the next three years to boost its revenue from the segment to a quarter from less than a fifth now, its beauty business CEO Biju Kassim said.

BOJ chief's dogged caution tempers board's hawkish instincts
TOKYO - In 2024, Kazuo Ueda delivered Japan's first interest rate hike in 17 years, a bold shift for a central bank once dominated by advocates of ultra-loose monetary settings - now, the Bank of Japan head is among the policy board's least hawkish members. The 73-year-old governor will attend the Federal Reserve's Jackson Hole annual symposium this week, where Chair Jerome Powell's assessment of the American economy and hints on the next U.S. rate cut will be factors in Japan's own deliberations. Ueda has become one of the more cautious members of the BOJ's nine-member board in recent months and his concerns about the economic impact of U.S. tariffs are likely to provide some restraint among his fellow policymakers who are calling for more rate hikes, analysts and sources say. An analysis in the BOJ's recent outlook report in part underscores his caution over the expected hit to Japan's economy from tariffs that could complicate its decision around the timing of the next rate hike. "Japan's trade deal with the U.S. reduced, but did not eliminate, uncertainty over tariffs," said a source familiar with the central bank's thinking, a view echoed by another source. "It's too early for the BOJ to be optimistic on Japan's economy." Ueda has faced growing calls from within his board to pay more attention to mounting inflationary pressure in Japan's once deflation-prone economy. A U.S. rate cut could push up the yen against the dollar, which may ease concern about the inflationary impact of a weak yen - but could hurt exporters' profits depending on the pace. Stubbornly high food inflation has led some BOJ board members to warn of second-round price effects that could warrant another rate hike, a summary of the bank's July meeting showed. The hawkish signals contrast with Ueda's post-meeting comments justifying going slow on rate hikes on the view underlying inflation, which focuses on domestic demand and wages, remains below the BOJ's target. "Governor Ueda appears to pay particularly close attention to the U.S. economy," said former BOJ board member Takahide Kiuchi. "If he becomes more convinced that the U.S. economy will stabilise, the BOJ could eye a rate hike this year." CIRCLE OF HAWKS On the surface, the hawks appear to be gaining an upper hand. Among current board members, three - Naoki Tamura, Hajime Takata and Junko Koeda - are seen by markets as hawks due in part to their recent comments warning that rising food prices could risk leading to broader-based, sustained inflation. Deputy governor Ryozo Himino, who once warned that keeping real interest rates negative for too long would be "abnormal", is considered the most hawkish among the BOJ's leadership. By contrast, the doves, who dominated the board when Ueda's predecessor Haruhiko Kuroda deployed a massive stimulus in 2013, have seen their presence and voice diminished. Toyoaki Nakamura, who voted against a rate hike in January, retired in June and was succeeded by Kazuyuki Masu, who is seen as taking a neutral stance on policy. Once a fan of heavy money printing, Asahi Noguchi has also turned more neutral and voted for raising rates in January. Such shifts in the board's policy bias put Ueda and his career central banker-turned deputy Shinichi Uchida in the more dovish camp, as their comments continue to focus on downside risks to Japan's fragile economy. Their caution reflects the BOJ's preference to await more data to gauge whether the global economy, including Japan's, will withstand the hit from U.S. tariffs, say sources familiar with the bank's thinking. It also reflects lingering worries within the BOJ that the damage to exports and capital expenditure will intensify in coming months - as predicted by the bank's economists. In analyses included in the July quarterly outlook, BOJ economists warned company profits are likely to fall this year because of U.S. tariffs, hurting capital expenditure. There is good reason to worry. While Japan's trade deal with the U.S. agreed to cut tariffs for its mainstay auto exports, Washington has not made clear the timing of the reduction. Many analysts expect exports, which lifted Japan's second-quarter GDP, to lose momentum later this year as the hit from U.S. tariffs deepens. Even hawkish board members warn such risks could warrant caution on rate hikes. "We need to scrutinise whether any negative impact from U.S. tariffs could appear," board member Takata said in a speech on July 3. Despite the board's hawkish tilt, Ueda's cautious stance may prevail given the influence the governor holds over BOJ decision making. With support from staff of key divisions, the governor prepares proposals on policy and interest rates for a vote by the board. Most have been approved unanimously or by a majority, including the BOJ's exit from a decade-long stimulus last year. The governor's proposal has never been voted down since the current board framework took shape in 1998. "I don't see any tough negotiator in the current board who could stage a revolt. It's hard to imagine the hawks proposing a rate hike against the governor's will," said former BOJ official Nobuyasu Atago, who used to be staff for hawkish ex-board member Miyako Suda.
