Truro Celebration of Culture getting 'bigger and better' every year
ITV News' Hannah Norbury spent the day at the event. Thousands of people gathered in Truro today, Saturday 2 August, to celebrate diversity, inclusion and culture. Now in its fifth year 'Celebration of Culture', which is organised by Black Voices Cornwall, is a showcase of music, international food and lots more. Abi Hutchinson who helped put on the event said: "Five years ago was when all the Black Lives Matters movement was happening, and we thought that is a really dark and scary place to be in and we simply wanted to bring a bit of light to the darkness. "I think to have these events is so important in Cornwall. Because they are so lacking unfortunately. "Black Voices Cornwall is so well placed to provide that experience for people that look like me and don't look like me and want to enjoy culture and have more experience in culture and diversity." Marcus Alleyne helped set up the event when it first started in 2020. Speaking about the first event he said: "When I think back to the first event, we had maybe a few hundred people throughout the day, milling about, about half the size and now here we are five years later, I think it is just going to get bigger and better." He now leads Rock Choir, who perform at the event. He added: "As a black musician in Cornwall to be able to find somewhere where I can identify, be who I am to the fullest in a safe space, that is incredible." Bev Bevington is a stall holder at the event, speaking about why she takes part, she said: "I just like the idea of being able to celebrate bringing people together and having a day to exchange what we know about each other and ourselves." Richard Edoki is a community hospital presenter. He came to the event last year and introduced himself to organisers. This year he is DJing at the event, he says representing people of Africa. He added: "Music is a platform that unites people. It helps bring peace to the community." Sisi Cherinet has opened what she believes is the first beauty salon for afro hair in Truro. She said: "It means a lot, we are celebrating culture today, which hair is a part of. "As you can see it is not only hair, there's lots of things around us and we can learn a lot from each other. It's important to interact with the community and create bonds."
