Bono Schools Joe Rogan on ‘Evil' Elon Musk Unleashed on the World

Yahoo2 days ago

U2 frontman Bono lectured podcaster Joe Rogan about the 'evils' of his buddy Elon Musk during a new podcast episode.
It began with Bono, who has a long history of involvement with the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), citing a study that estimates the number of global deaths caused by Musk's cuts at the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) at more than 300,000. He explained Friday that food is currently 'rotting' in boats and warehouses because Musk fired the people responsible for distributing it.
'That's not America, is it?' Bono asked Rogan.
Bono told Rogan that he 'gets the instinct' to shrink 'big government'—but that doing so has consequences.
'To choose which child to pull off the IVs—it just seems to me like, I don't know if 'evil' is too strong a word, but what we know about pure evil is, it rejoices in the deaths, in the squandering of human life, particularly children,' Bono said as Rogan nodded along. 'It actually rejoices in it, and whether it's incompetence, whether it's unintended consequences, it's not too late.'
Bono revealed that he's brought his case on this issue directly to Secretary of State—and acting administration of USAID—Marco Rubio, who is 'convinced people aren't dying' despite all evidence to the contrary.
'I just want to remind Americans of the size of their country, and I'm not talking about the geography,' Bono said, as Rogan chimed in with, 'The impact.'
'The size of the idea, it's just an extraordinary thing,' Bono continued. 'It's an idea big enough to fit the whole world, and when it becomes an island rather than a continent... when it shrinks, America seems to stop being America.'
During the conversation, Rogan acknowledged the negative impact of cuts to USAID while still alleging the agency had misspent money.
'So there's a lot of fraud, a lot of money-laundering,' Rogan said, 'But also, we help the world and when you're talking about making wells for people in the Congo to get fresh water, when you're talking about food and medicine to places that don't have access, no way that should have been cut out. And that should have been clear before they make these radical cuts.'
Instead, Rogan said Musk should have given the agencies time to 'prepare' and 'build new infrastructure' so that this type of needless suffering could be avoided.
'The ironic thing is, even though Elon Musk has proposed all these things and the DOGE committee has proposed all these things, they've made no cuts in terms of the budget,' Rogan then admitted. 'They've cut nothing.'
A Financial Times report earlier this month found that DOGE has fallen far short of its initial goal to cut $2 trillion in federal spending, saving the federal government even less than the $170 billion in savings DOGE has publicly claimed.

Your Car Loan Just Got Cheaper as New Bill Allows Tax Write-offs on Interest

The U.S. House of Representatives has passed President Trump's sweeping tax bill, nicknamed the "Big Beautiful Bill," which includes an above-the-line deduction of up to $10,000 in car loan interest. In other words, taxpayers who itemize deductions or claim the standard deduction wouldn't pay tax on auto loan interest up to $10,000. However, your income and the vehicle type you purchase determine your eligibility. The deduction would be phased out by $200 for every $1,000 of modified adjusted gross income above $100,000 for single filers and $200,000 for joint filers, according to the Tax Foundation. Single filers earning above $149,000 and joint filers making over $249,000 wouldn't qualify for an auto loan interest write-off. Qualifying individuals or joint filers could receive the deduction for auto loans taken out in 2025 through 2028 each year until the temporary write-off expires, the Detroit Free Press reports. Additionally, the deduction only applies to cars with their final assembly in the United States. Qualifying vehicle types include SUVs, cars, trucks, vans, motorcycles, all-terrain models, and RVs. If the proposed legislation passes through the Senate and becomes law, drivers can expect to receive the highest deduction during a loan's first year since most monthly payments cover interest rather than principal. The average new car loan for May carries a 4.77% average interest rate for those with a FICO credit score ranging from 781 to 850, according to Bankrate. A credit score between 661 and 780 incurs a 6.40% rate, and the next-lowest tier, 601 to 660, jumps to 9.59%. Credit scores between 501 and 600 carry a 13.08% average interest rate on a new car loan, while 300 to 500 ratings incur a 15.75% rate. If the average driver pays $2,000 on auto loan interest in a year, they'd save $400 on their taxes. Leases, commercial vehicles, and salvage titles would not qualify for auto loan interest deductions. Whether the bill includes interest deductions for used vehicles or only new ones is unclear. While all Americans would welcome auto loan interest write-offs, Trump's bill also proposes that hybrid owners pay $100 more yearly to register their car, and electric vehicle (EV) owners pay a $250 annual registration fee. The fees are projected to generate around $40 billion over the next decade for the Highway Trust Fund (HTF), which pays for various transportation infrastructure projects. While many Americans would welcome auto loan interest tax write-offs, a deduction that hasn't been available since Ronald Reagan's presidency, the proposed legislation's impact appears relatively minimal. "I don't know of many people who would decide that they can buy a car because they're going to cut their taxes by $400. So, we don't think it's as exciting a proposition for driving more vehicle sales," Cox Automotive chief economist Jonathan Smoke said, according to Bankrate. Additionally, the expected sharp rise in already-high vehicle prices due to Trump's auto import tariffs would further offset any savings. Copyright 2025 The Arena Group, Inc. All Rights Reserved.

Musk's departure marks new chapter for government efficiency in border security

As the Department of Government Efficiency enters a new era with the departure of Elon Musk on Friday, it has caused numerous changes in recent months on matters of immigration and border security. "DOGE has helped to transform the Federal government by eliminating waste and bloat that has been ignored for years. DOGE is playing a key role in eliminating millions of taxpayer money being misspent, including contracts for illegal alien facilities that sat empty during the Biden Border invasion and funding for hotel rooms to house illegal gang members. DOGE's mission to eliminate waste, fraud, and abuse continues!" Abigail Jackson, a White House spokeswoman, told Fox News Digital in a statement on Friday. In February, the Department of Homeland Security announced that they had gutted an $83 million contract for "an empty illegal alien facility during an invasion at the southern border" and the $80 million in FEMA funding to provide lodging for illegal immigrants in New York City, like the Roosevelt Hotel. Doge Staffing Shakeup As Elon Musk Hangs Up His Hat, White House Confirms In March, a contract to resume wall construction along seven miles of the border was cleared by DOGE. "Secretary Noem announced that we officially awarded the first [DOGE] approved contract to restart construction on President Trump's border wall," DHS posted on March 17. Read On The Fox News App DOGE also posted to X in April that it had found that many illegal immigrants who were on the FBI's terror watchlist and those who have a criminal history were taking out public benefits. Four on the terror watchlist and 901 other "paroled aliens" were "collecting Medicaid," 41 received unemployment benefits, 22 got student loans from the federal government and 409 got a "net" tax refund in 2024, according to the department. The cost of the tax refunds was $751,000, Medicaid cost $276,000, and the student loans totaled out to $280,000, the department said. Top 5 Most Outrageous Ways The Government Has Wasted Your Taxes, As Uncovered By Elon Musk's Doge "Under the Biden administration, it was routine for Border Patrol to admit aliens into the United States with no legal status and minimal screening," the post stated. "So far, CBP identified a subset of 6.3k individuals paroled into the United States since 2023 on the FBI's Terrorist Screening Center watchlist or with criminal records. These paroles have since been terminated with immediate effect. Despite having no other legal status, paroled aliens are able to file for work authorization and receive social security numbers." Outside of immigration and border security, DHS said the Coast Guard is expected to save $32.7 million by scrapping an information technology system that was deemed "ineffective." In a video posted in May about the partnership between DOGE and DHS, it said the funds are going to "frontline operations." "Another win for government efficiency at DHS!" DHS Secretary Kristi Noem said in a statement to Fox News Digital in April. Trump, Musk Get Support From Former Nfl Star Amid Criticism Over Doge Cuts, Other Issues "Continuing the crucial work of DOGE, the Coast Guard eliminated an ineffective IT program, saving over $32 million and focusing its resources where they're most needed to protect the homeland. The USCG continues to deliver on the President's priorities, maximizing its efficiency while securing our borders and maritime approaches," Noem added. DHS and the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) also recently announced a planned crackdown on illegal immigrants' use of public housing benefits. And last month, DHS announced that, in the spirit of cracking down on "waste, fraud and abuse," it was ending FEMA's Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities program. Doge Discovers The Biden-mayorkas Illegal Migration Funding Machine "The BRIC program was yet another example of a wasteful and ineffective FEMA program. It was more concerned with political agendas than helping Americans affected by natural disasters," a FEMA spokesperson said in a statement at the time. "Under Secretary Noem's leadership, we are committed to ensuring that Americans in crisis can get the help and resources they need." Fox News reached out to DHS for additional comment. The changes come as President Donald Trump made major policy changes during the early days of his second term, which has led to a sharp decrease in encounters at the border and a continued crackdown on illegal immigrants with a criminal background in the U.S. interior. In total, DOGE has estimated it has saved $175 billion for taxpayers so far. Fox News' Greg Wehner and Preston Mizell contributed to this report.
