Film review: Jurassic Park: Rebirth places the focus on the real stars — the dinosaurs
These days, alas, the kids are inured to the wonder of the dinosaurs, who, dying off due to climate change and disease, can only be found in the wild in a no-go zone around the equator.
Enter Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend), a pharmaceutical company fixer who requires dino DNA for a revolutionary new heart medicine, and who commissions the mercenary Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson) to assemble a team to source the DNA of three of the biggest dinosaurs that ever lived.
Complicating matters is the fact that the three behemoths are seagoing, airborne, and land-dwelling; also, the samples need to be taken from living creatures.
Having thus raised the stakes a little higher than previous Jurassic Park movies, director Gareth Edwards unleashes his crack team on a remote island — Zora pulls in her old sea-captain pal Duncan (Mahershala Ali), and dino expert Dr Loomis (Jonathan Bailey) — and tosses them into scenarios that fans of the franchise will recognise as a kind of Jurassic Park greatest hits, albeit one that includes dinosaurs that have evolved/mutated into beasts that are strongly reminiscent of the nightmarish creatures from the Alien franchise.
An early nod to the work of animation genius Ray Harryhausen tells us that Edwards is deliberately harking back to past glories, and for the most part it works.
Scarlett Johansson is enjoyably self-deprecating and hard-nosed as the mercenary-in-chief, and there's strong support from a charismatic Mahershala Ali and a quietly diffident Jonathan Bailey, who deftly juggles the twin roles of hapless boffin and Johansson's love interest — although, as always, it's the terrifying dinosaurs who are the real stars.
Vincent Cassel and Diane Kruger in 'The Shrouds.'
The Shrouds
★★★☆☆
Cinema release
The Shrouds (16s) stars Vincent Cassel as Karsh Relik, a man who has pioneered 'Gravetech', a coffin-cam technology and the ultimate memento mori that allows mourners to observe their loved ones decomposing in their graves.
Obsessed with his dead wife Becca (Diane Kruger), Karsh is horrified when his cemetery is vandalised, and suspects corporate sabotage —a view shared by Terry (also played by Kruger), Becca's sister and Karsh's confidante.
All of which sounds morbid, to say the least, but is par for the course for writer-director David Cronenberg, who once again explores many of the motifs that have characterised his work: body horror, doppelgängers, the unholy blend of human and machine.
It all feels rather stilted, however, and particularly Cassel's performance and dialogue delivery, and the story itself has the clumsy, fumbling feel of a man trying to remember how this thing used to work.
Beat the Lotto
Beat the Lotto
★★★☆☆
Cinema release
Beat the Lotto (G) is a documentary by Ross Whitaker detailing how a syndicate of gamblers, assembled in 1992 by Cork man Stefan Klincewicz, attempted to scoop the Lotto by buying up every single possible combination of six numbers.
Featuring contemporary TV footage and talking heads interviews with the syndicate members, the film does a surprisingly good job of ramping up the tension in a story we already know the outcome of, as the Lotto, alerted to the unusual patterns of play, goes on the offensive.
That said, Whitaker is less successful at framing the syndicate as plucky outsiders who took on the system and won; despite their almost child-like excitement at being on the inside track, these are men who seek to strip away the fantasy of winning the Lotto in their pursuit of a cast-iron plunger.
As journalist Mark Little points out, the perfectly legal heist marked the death of a certain kind of economic innocence as we belatedly learned that the luck of the Irish was no substitute for a clear-eyed appraisal of the odds.

My run-in with rude Scarlett Johannson still shocks me to this day… she may be worth £11bn but money can't buy manners
AS Scarlett Johansson was ushered up the red carpet looking breathtaking in a skin tight nude gown, crowds gasped and flashbulbs exploded in a frenzy as it became clear we were watching a star being born. In a sea of skinny starlets, she was refreshingly curvy, and her stunning looks were already drawing gushing comparisons with 1950's sex symbol Marilyn Monroe - but Scarlett was just 19 years old and nervous. 16 Scarlett Johansson arriving at the Golden Globe Awards on the night of our meeting in 2004 Credit: Getty 16 The smiling starlet, pictured at the after party at the Beverly Hilton Hotel, had just stunned Nadia in their encounter Credit: Getty 16 Scarlett was nominated for Lost In Translation with Bill Murray, the role that first shot her to worldwide fame in 2004 Credit: Alamy 16 Sun writer Nadia Cohen at the Golden Globes in Los Angeles in 2004 Credit: Supplied That was 20 years ago. Now the phenomenal success of Scarlett's latest action movie Jurassic World: Rebirth has sent the actress' earning power stratospheric - with her worldwide box office takings soaring to a staggering £11billion ($14.8bn). She surpassed Marvel Cinematic Universe stars It's an astonishing feat, but when I first met the actress as she was starting out in Hollywood she was, in my opinion, not prepared for the intense scrutiny that lay ahead. We had a painfully awkward encounter at the Golden Globe Awards in January 2004, where she was nominated for Lost In Translation, the 2003 role that first shot her to worldwide fame. I was reporting on the awards show for an American entertainment magazine, and about halfway through the ceremony I nipped away from the press area in the balcony to use the toilet. As I was washing my hands, Scarlett emerged from a cubicle behind me and our eyes met in the mirror. I smiled, but she did not smile back. I blurted out: "I love your dress!" In hindsight it was a pretty obvious thing to say, but I genuinely meant it. She looked fantastic. Scarlett Johansson corrects Today's Savannah Guthrie after host botches famous Jurassic Park line in awkward moment I looked away, and turned off the tap. But instead of giving a polite nod or simply saying, "Thanks," she glared back, slowly looked my plain black frock up and down, and asked with a sarcastic sneer: "Is this the part where I'm supposed to say I like yours?" I was too stunned to reply, and spent the rest of the evening wondering why on earth she would have even bothered to be so rude to a total stranger. She is now a 40-year-old mother-of-two and has the world at her feet, but continues to rub people up the wrong way. Her love life has been colourful, to say the least. She briefly dated Hollywood producer Jack Antonoff when they were at high school together, and in 2006 had a year-long fling with Pearl Harbour hunk Next she fell for heartthrob Ryan Reynolds, 48, who would become the first of her three husbands. They had only been dating for a year when it emerged they had tied the knot on Vancouver Island in September 2008 - but their marriage was over three years later, allegedly due to her workload. I was too stunned to reply, and spent the rest of the evening wondering why on earth she would have even bothered to be so rude to a total stranger Nadia Cohen Scarlett swiftly moved on to movie executive Nate Naylor in 2011. By 2012 however, she had fallen for French journalist Romain Dauriac during a trip to Paris, and they married in a secret ceremony at a ranch in Montana in 2014. They had a daughter - Rose, now 10 - but There was a bitter custody battle over where Rose would live, and in a terse statement issued at the time Scarlett pleaded for privacy. She said: "Out of respect for my desires as a parent and out of respect for all working moms, it is with kindness that I ask other parties involved and the media to do the same." Yet she bounced back fast and was dating Saturday Night Live comedian Colin Jost by 2017. The pair tied the knot in New York in October 2020 and now have a three-year-old son called Cosmo. She has also complained about being "I think women that are curvy can be pigeonholed in that bombshell thing,' she moaned. 'It's not like I actively look for sexy roles. 'It's not a requirement that my character be pretty and delicate. I never think about my character being sexy, unless that's written in." Earlier this year, in March, she grumbled about eager fans asking for photos with her. In an interview with InStyle magazine she revealed her strict policy for getting rid of unwanted admirers. 'It really offends a lot of people," she admitted. 'It doesn't mean I'm not appreciative, of course, that people are fans, or happy to see me. 'But I always say to people, 'I'm not working.' And that means I don't want to be identified as being in this time and place with you. I'm doing my own thing. 'I like to be in my own thoughts that have nothing to do with what other people think of me. I don't like being self-conscious.' Just last week Scarlett was caught shrieking at photographers while filming her new drama Paper Tiger. 'Move out the f*****g way,' she yelled, ushering a snapper away with her hand. 'I'm working.' Furious backlash 16 Scarlett has stood by director Woody Allen over sexual abuse allegations Credit: Getty 16 Woody praised her sultry performance with Javier Bardem in Vicky Cristina Barcelona Credit: Handout 16 Scarlett's character seduces Jonathan Rhys Meyers' in Woody Allen's Match Point Credit: DreamWorks Scarlett has also faced furious backlash for her outspoken opinions - including her consistent defence of controversial director Woody Allen over allegations of sexual abuse made by his adopted daughter Scarlett starred in three of his most successful films - Match Point, Scoop, and Vicky Cristina Barcelona - and said in 2019: 'I love Woody and I believe him and I would work with him anytime. 'I see Woody whenever I can, and I have had a lot of conversations with him about it. He maintains his innocence, and I believe him.' Meanwhile other stars including Scarlett was also accused of "whitewashing" Japanese manga art when she was cast as a cyborg in Ghost In The Shell in 2015. In the original animated films and video games her character was Asian, and more than 15,000 people signed a petition urging producers to replace her with an Asian actress. Scarlett defended herself, arguing: 'Acting goes through trends. "You know, as an actor I should be allowed to play any person, or any tree, or any animal because that is my job and the requirements of my job. 'There are a lot of social lines being drawn now, and a lot of political correctness is being reflected in art." She came under fire again in 2018 for arguing that a straight woman should be able to play trans characters - but amid a torrent of harsh criticism from the trans community she dropped out of her role in Rub and Tug. She had been set to play crime kingpin Dante 'Tex' Gill, who was born Lois Jean Gill but identified as a man, and used his massage parlours as a front for prostitution dens. A year later Scarlett admitted she had been insensitive. In hindsight, I mishandled that situation. I was not sensitive Scarlett Johansson 'In hindsight, I mishandled that situation,' she said. 'I was not sensitive, my initial reaction to it. 'I wasn't totally aware of how the trans community felt about those actors playing and how they felt in general about cis actors playing transgender people. "I wasn't aware of that conversation, I was uneducated. So I learned a lot through that process. I misjudged that, It was a hard time. 'It was like a whirlwind. I felt terribly about it. To feel like you're kind of tone-deaf to something is not a good feeling.' Perhaps it's not as much fun as it sounds being universally admired as a sex bomb and hounded by adoring autograph hunters - but that evening in the ladies loo of the Beverly Hilton Hotel, I was simply being polite. And she should have done the same. 16 Critics said her role in Ghost in the Shell should have gone to an Asian actress Credit: Alamy 16 Thousands campaigned for Scarlett to quit the 2015 action role Credit: PARAMOUNT PICTURES

Scarlett Johansson has set a box office record. But could the movie star be out of a job?
Somewhere out there, a Statler or a Waldorf is arguing that Scarlett Johansson is no Clark Gable. She's not even a Myrna Loy. They don't make them like that any more. Blah-blah. We will get to the relevance of those particular veterans in a moment, but, whatever one's feelings about Johansson, it cannot be denied that she has claimed one high-profile record all for herself. This week it emerged that she is now the highest-grossing lead actor of all time. This is not to say she is the best-paid actor. (Last year that was Duane 'the Rock' Johnson.) But movies starring Johansson have made more than movies starring anybody else. The co-lead of the current smash Jurassic World: Rebirth passes out Samuel L Jackson with her lifetime total of $14.9 billion, or about €12.7 billion. Robert Downey jnr , Zoë Saldaña and Chris Pratt complete the top five. [ Jurassic World: Rebirth review – the plot is mid-level dumb but 'good film' belongs among its keywords Opens in new window ] Words can scarcely express what a flawed metric this is for establishing the biggest – not to mention the greatest – movie star of all time. Inflation strips the figures of some relevancy, but, when it comes to the all-time box-office charts, the unadjusted number one remains something worth fighting over. Avatar, the current champ, is, astonishingly, still number two when you tweak for inflation. READ MORE No, the real issue is to do with the withering potency of the movie star. Almost none of the films that got Johansson to the top was sold on her name. This is no slight on an eminently likable and charismatic actor. The same can be said of the four who complete that top five. Scar-Jo gets there thanks to her role as Black Widow in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and, now, as gun-toting team leader in that Jurassic World movie. The stand-alone Black Widow film, released as we were coming out of Covid, is the lowest-grossing of her MCU flicks. Jackson and Downey jnr are also Marvel alumni. Saldaña registers for the MCU and the two Avatar films. Pratt scores for the MCU and the previous three Jurassic World films. So registering on this list is all about getting yourself signed on for the biggest franchises of the day. It has been said before; it will be said again. The intellectual property (as we grandly label familiar source material) is now the real star of the movie. What the hell is the name of the guy in that new Superman flick ? Dirk Cornswoggle? Doug Clangpiglet? Never mind. It's Superman, baby. At the risk of encouraging Statler and Waldorf, let us note that it was very much not this way in the old days. In 2000, TLA Releasing set out to tabulate the stars who had sold the most tickets at the box office through the decades. This is obviously a better model than highest grosser, as inflation has no bearing. [ Scarlett Johansson: 'I had a very formidable grandmother who I was incredibly close with' Opens in new window ] The results bring us back to a whole different universe. If you wished to be cynical you could still see this as a chart of brands, but the brand – honed and primped by the studio system – is the actor, not what then was not called a franchise. Gable, star of the annihilating Gone with the Wind, is at number one with 1.2 billion tickets sold. John Wayne is there at number two, with 1.1 billion. Everyone in that top 10 had an easily summarised type – avuncular Bing Crosby, homely Jimmy Stewart, suave Cary Grant and so on – and each knew not to swerve too far from that template. The only one who points towards our current compromised future is Harrison Ford, at number nine. True, he had already clocked up a bunch of Star Wars and Indiana Jones flicks, but, even in those, he felt like a craggy visitor from the golden age. The bad news for sentimental old fogeys is that no woman makes the top 10. It is, indeed, Myrna Loy who scrapes in first, at number 11, a few places ahead of Bette Davis and Judy Garland. All recognisable brands. Each the most saleable aspect of the films in which they starred. For all that sighing towards a supposedly golden past, one would have trouble arguing that Johansson is an unworthy candidate for stellar elevation. If not her then who else? True, she can't open a film like Bette Davis once did. But nobody can do that any more. Everything else about Johansson radiates vintage glamour. When she graduated from juvenile roles to adult lead, with Lost in Translation, in 2003, it was immediately apparent that we had a movie star on our hands. The worry is that the job of movie star is now as redundant as that of lamplighter, crossing sweeper or court jester. That Superman guy's name will come to me in a minute.
