Artificial lake floods village in Uttarkashi

Heavy rain triggered fresh landslides in Uttarkashi on Thursday, this time in Syanachatti, with boulders tumbling into the village from the hills, cutting off the Yamuna and creating an artificial lake that inundated large swathes of the hamlet. Inundation at a tourist resthouse in Syanachatti. (HT PHOTO) All houses and hotels were evacuated and residents asked to move to higher ground, with authorities wary after the tragedy in Dharali, also in Uttarkashi district, two weeks ago that left dozens missing. Just two bodies have been found so far. 'The situation in Syanachatti prompted the administration to issue a red alert. All houses and hotels in Syanachatti have been evacuated and residents along the Yamuna riverbanks have been asked to move to safer locations,' said Shardul Gusain, district disaster management officer of Uttarkashi. Officials sais that the water level and swampy conditions have made it difficult to start channelisation work. Syanachatti has a population of about 300 people and it is around 22 km from Yamunotri Dham. Residents reported that boulders and debris slid into the river along the Kukra Khad gorge damming its flow and pushing water into the pilgrim town. The rising water even reached the motor bridge on the Yamunotri National Highway, triggering fears of a traffic disruption and prompting the authorities to expedite evacuations. The motor bridge is a key link to Yamunotri Dham and damage to it could effectively maroon residents. Authorities have stepped up vigilance in Syanachatti and nearby areas including Kuthanor, Kisala, Kharadi, Gangnani, Rajastra, Paunti Pul, Bagasu and Mugra bridge. Brijesh Kumar Tiwari, sub-divisional magistrate of Barkot, said teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) were on standby. 'The irrigation department has been tasked with channelising the Yamuna's flow, but operations with large earthmovers are difficult due to high water levels. More than 50 people, including Nepali workers, have been shifted to safer places. No pilgrims are staying in hotels or homestays,' he said. Shailendra Singh, a local hotelier said, 'The ground floor of my hotel has completely submerged and I have shifted my family along with other 150 people to another hotel that is upstream on the Yamunotri highway.'' The fresh crisis comes days after flash floods near Harsil created another temporary lake on the Bhagirathi when debris from the Telgad stream blocked its flow, highlighting the growing vulnerability of the region to extreme weather events.

IDF acknowledges ‘failure' in Hamas attack at army camp in Gaza's Khan Younis

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on Thursday acknowledged that its failure resulted in a surprise attack by Hamas gunmen at an encampment in southern Gaza's Khan Younis a day earlier. An IDF probe into the incident found that the Hamas gunmen emerged from a tunnel some 40-50 metres from the military post. According to a Times of Israel report, the existence of the tunnel was known to the military, and it had been partially demolished. ⭕️Earlier today, over 15 terrorists fired both gunfire and anti-tank missiles and attempted to infiltrate a fortified IDF position in Khan Yunis. The troops, with IAF support, eliminated 10 armed terrorists in close-quarters combat. The incident is ongoing and troops continue to… — Israel Defense Forces (@IDF) August 20, 2025 The gunmen who were armed with assault rifles, RPGs, grenades, and explosive devices apparently dug out a new shaft using the existing underground passage during the attack, the report said. Around 15 gunmen were involved in the attack, the IDF said. After emerging from the tunnel, the gunmen split into three groups, with one stationed on a dirt mound, the second heading into a building in the encampment and the third attacking a building that had soldiers stationed in it. Two of the gunmen breached the building where the troops were stationed and hurled grenades and opened fire at the soldiers who shot back. In the ensuing exchange, both gunmen were shot dead, and three soldiers were injured. The IDF probe found that 15 gunmen were shot dead in the exchange that lasted around 10 minutes. Hamas's military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, took responsibility for the attack in a statement, claiming that its gunmen 'stormed the site' and carried out a suicide bombing. This was one of the most serious attacks on an IDF post by Hamas in recent times. The attack comes as Israel launches a large-scale assault to seize and fully occupy Gaza City. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was expected to give final approval Thursday for plans to take over Gaza City, an operation that could start within days. Netanyahu was set to meet with top security officials to sign off on the plans, the Associated Press reported, citing an Israeli official who was not authorised to brief the media. On Wednesday, the IDF said it plans to call up 60,000 reservists and extend the service of 20,000 others as part of the Gaza takeover plan, which has been condemned by countries around the world. There is a growing fear that a renewed offensive in Gaza could bring even more casualties and displacement to the territory, where the war has already killed tens of thousands and where experts have warned of imminent famine. The Gaza takeover plan has also met with opposition from within Israel, especially from the families of the hostages who are still being held by Hamas. Families of the hostages gathered in Tel Aviv on Wednesday to condemn the expanded operation. Israel believes around 20 hostages are still alive. 'Forty-two hostages were kidnapped alive and murdered in captivity due to military pressure and delay in signing a deal,' said Dalia Cusnir, whose brother-in-law, Eitan Horn, is still being held captive. Eitan's brother, Iair Horn, was released during a ceasefire earlier this year. 'Enough to sacrifice the hostages. Enough to sacrifice the soldiers, both regular and reservists. Enough to sacrifice the evacuees. Enough to sacrifice the younger generation in the country,' said Bar Goddard, the daughter of Meni Goddard, whose body is being held by Hamas.

Man out on bail for brother's murder held for killing sister-in-law, children

The Motipur Police cracked the sensational case of a woman and her three minor daughters' murder with the arrest of the accused, Anirudh Kumar, who was shockingly out on bail in a 2018 fratricide case. For representation only (HT File Photo) According to the police, complainant Rampata, a resident of Chaudharigaon, reported on August 19 that her daughter Suman and three granddaughters – Nandini (12), Anshika (6) and Laado (3) – had gone missing. She accused her son-in-law Anirudh of abducting them. Acting on the complaint Motipur Police filed and FIR No. 415/2025 under Section 140(1) BNS. Acting on a tip-off, a police team led by ASP, rural, Durga Prasad Tiwari and CO, Mihipurwa, Harshita Tiwari, arrested Anirudh near Gaighat Bridge on Wednesday. During interrogation, he confessed to taking his wife and children to Lakhimpur Kheri on August 14 and pushing them one by one into the Sharda River from a bridge. On his identification, police recovered clothes of the deceased, children's shoes, and the motorcycle used in the crime from near the river. The ASP said investigations revealed Anirudh had earlier murdered his brother Santosh Kumar in 2018. He was out on bail in that case, which is still pending in court. After Santosh's murder, Anirudh kept his brother's widow as wife and had two daughters with her – Anshika and Laado, the ASP said. Suman was a prime witness in the 2018 case. To silence her and seize his brother's property, Anirudh executed this crime with an accomplice. Police have added Sections 103(1) and 238 BNS to the case. The accused has been produced before court along with the recovered evidence. Search for his accomplice is underway.
