Cool and gray, Friday seemed nothing like Washington in August

Washington Post2 days ago
The sun didn't shine in Washington on Friday; gray clouds covered the sky, and the temperature stayed in the 70s when not in the 60s, making it seem as if the city had stealthily migrated to Scotland or Scandinavia or Duluth, Minnesota.
August began in D.C. on Friday on a day that seemed to lack much similarity to the month or the season, a day that defied conventional Washington weather wisdom, a day with almost no trace of the summertime trials and torments that Washington had so recently been enduring.

Storm Floris: Rail services cancelled in Cumbria amid weather warning

Cumbrians are being warned not to travel tomorrow amid a yellow weather warning as Storm Floris sweeps in across North West England and Scotland. The Met Office has forecast wind speeds between 70-80mph in Cumbria tomorrow with parts of Scotland on an Amber Warning. Much of the rail network including Avanti West Coast, Northern Rail and TransPennine Express are cancelling or delaying scheduled services. TransPennine Express (TPE) warned customers not to travel tomorrow (Monday 4 August). TPE services will not operate between Carlisle and Glasgow Central or Edinburgh as well as between Newcastle and Edinburgh. There may also be delays on services between Liverpool Lime Street and Carlisle and Manchester Airport and Carlisle. Andrew McClements, Customer Experience and Transformation Director at TPE, said: 'Storm Floris will cause widespread disruption across the network tomorrow, affecting all operators in the region. 'As such, we are advising passengers not to travel and to consider whether their journey is necessary. 'Customers who have already bought tickets for travel on Monday can use those tickets on services on Tuesday. 'Alternatively, if customers are unable to travel, they can apply for refunds from their point of purchase." Avanti West Coast said: "We're advising customers not to travel north of Preston tomorrow, 4 August, as our Anglo-Scot route is expected to be heavily affected by Storm Floris. Destinations north of Preston include Lancaster, Oxenholme, Penrith, Carlisle, Lockerbie, Motherwell, Haymarket, Glasgow" Northern Rail said: "Our north west services across Cumbria may be disrupted tomorrow as #StormFloris heads across the country. If travelling in this area, make sure you plan ahead, and re check your journey regularly.

Mudslide shuts down part of Highway 40 in Kananaskis

Part of Highway 40 in Kananaskis Country closed Sunday due to a mud slide. According to a 511 Alberta advisory issued around 8:30 a.m. MT Sunday, a washout on the highway closed it to all traffic between the Mount Lipsett and Mist Creek day-use areas. That section of Highway 40 is roughly 130 kilometres southeast of Banff, Alta. RCMP said on Sunday they expect the road to be closed for two days. Sunday morning's advisory was an update to a previous advisory issued around 10 p.m. Saturday. At that time, 511 Alberta said the highway between Elbow Lake and Junction south of Kananaskis Village was closed due to the mudslide. A mudslide was also reported on Highway 1, west of Banff. 511 Alberta said the weather event brought debris onto the highway, causing delays east of Redearth Creek. Environment Canada says more rain, with the risk of a thunderstorm, is in Sunday's forecast for Kananaskis Village.
