Germany rejects accusations towards ambassador after Uganda's military cuts ties
NAIROBI - Uganda's military has severed all military cooperation with Germany after it accused Berlin's ambassador to Kampala of involvement in "subversive activities" in the East African country, its spokesperson said.
A spokesperson for Germany's foreign ministry said at a press conference in Berlin on Monday that the accusations were "absurd and without any merit and we reject them in the strongest terms".
The spokesperson declined to comment further on the nature of the accusations.
The Uganda People's Defence Forces spokesperson, Chris Magezi, also gave no further details in the statement he posted on X on Sunday, apart from saying the decision was in response to "credible intelligence reports".
In a separate post on the platform on Sunday, Uganda's military chief Muhoozi Kainerugaba said the military was having problems with Ambassador Mathias Schauer "as a person".
"It has to do with him as a person. He is wholly unqualified to be in Uganda. It has nothing to do with the great German people," Kainerugaba said.
The spokesperson for Uganda's ministry of foreign affairs could not be reached for comment.
Magezi gave no details of any existing military cooperation between Uganda and Germany. The German spokesperson said there was no formalised military cooperation between the two countries.
Uganda has its troops in the African Union peacekeeping force in Somalia, which is partly funded by the European Union, of which Germany is a member.
Kainerugaba, the son of President Yoweri Museveni and widely seen as heir apparent, is known for his inflammatory posts on social media which have included threats to Western diplomats in Kampala. REUTERS

Merz said he had been reassured by the words Trump had uttered during their public encounter in the Oval Office, especially the U.S. president's "resounding no" to a question on whether the United States had plans to withdraw from NATO. European countries have been boosting defence spending since the start of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, in the continent's bloodiest conflict since World War Two. Merz has backed Trump's demand for NATO members to commit to a target of more than doubling defence spending to 5% of economic output in the future. He was speaking on his first visit to the Himalayan region since Islamist attackers targeted Hindu tourists in the popular Pahalgam area, killing 26 men, triggering hostilities between the nuclear-armed neighbours that ended in ceasefire last month. "The atmosphere of development that emerged in Jammu and Kashmir will not be hindered by the attack ... I will not let development stop here," Modi said in remarks after inaugurating infrastructure projects. Key among these was a $5-billion rail link between the Kashmir Valley and the rest of India, which has been more than 40 years in the making and features the world's highest railway arch bridge. Others include highways, city roads and a new medical college. India has accused Pakistan of backing the April attack, a claim denied by Islamabad, and they engaged in four days of fierce fighting last month before agreeing to a ceasefire. Pakistan aimed to disrupt the livelihoods of the poor in Kashmir, who rely heavily on tourism, Modi said, adding that he would face down any obstacle to regional development. Russia's military released the statement after Ukrainian officials said Russia had launched an intense missile and drone barrage at Kyiv, the Ukrainian capital, in the early hours of Friday and that three people had been killed. Russia has accused Ukraine of being behind a deadly bomb attack on a bridge over a railway line in western Russia at the weekend that was blown up just as a train carrying 388 passengers to Moscow was passing underneath. Seven people were killed and 155 injured in the incident which Kyiv has not taken responsibility for. Separately, Ukraine attacked Russian nuclear-capable bomber planes at airfields over the same weekend, causing significant damage. President Vladimir Putin told U.S. President Donald Trump this week that he would retaliate. Ukraine has frequently accused Russia of terrorism, citing attacks in which thousands of civilians have been killed. Both sides say they do not target civilians. The Russian military said in its statement that it had used long-range weapons to strike Ukraine. "In response to terrorist acts by the Kyiv regime, the Russian Armed Forces carried out a massive strike overnight with long-range air, sea and land-based precision weapons," the ministry said. It said the strike had targeted "Ukrainian design bureaus, enterprises for the production and repair of weapons and military equipment, assembly workshops for strike drones, flight training centres, and Ukrainian armed forces weapons and military equipment depots." "The objective of the strike was achieved. All designated targets were hit." Russian troops had also taken control of the settlement of Fedorivka in eastern Ukraine, the Defence Ministry said.
