Celtic's Stephen Welsh targeted by KV Mechelen after loan
The centre-back, 25, moved to Belgium on loan in January with game time at a premium during the first part of the season. Mechelen had an offer rejected for him last summer but persisted in the winter window and landed their man.
Welsh played 17 times for the Jupiler Pro League as they made it to the Conference League play-off group of the Belgian league split, although they ultimately failed to qualify for Europe.
He is due to return for Hoops pre-season but has impressed his loan club enough that they are looking to try and sign him permanently, reports the Daily Record.
However, his performances have also caught the eye of other clubs and they face competition from within Belgium and also other European clubs.
The defender scored his first goal for Mechelen against FCV Dender at the weekend.
Previously speaking on his spell, he said: 'I have loved every minute of it.
'I think it is the best thing I have done, it is almost like a refresh for six months to go and play football at a top level.'
Welsh has two years left on his contract but found Cameron Carter-Vickers, Auston Trusty, Liam Scales and Maik Nawrocki ahead of him in the pecking order before heading out in january.

Bruno Fernandes makes stunning transfer decision after demand from Ruben Amorim
Bruno Fernandes has decided to REJECT a move to Saudi Arabia. The Manchester United captain has turned down a £700k-a-week switch to Al-Hilal, worth £100m to him over three years - and a £100m transfer fee to United. And that leaves United chiefs, led by co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, with no choice but to listen to head coach Ruben Amorim's demand to find better ways of making money in this summer's transfer market. Al Hilal are playing in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup and Saudi chiefs - operating in Paris this week - have been pushing hard to get a number of deals done before the tournament. But their hopes of making Fernandes their marquee new signing - in a move that would see him link up with Portugal team-mates Ruben Neves and Joao Cancelo - have failed. The 30-year-old has been weighing up a move to Saudi over the past couple of weeks, following United's disastrous season. He has been aware of the monstrous money he could make by moving to the Middle East, as well as the effect the £100m could have on United, especially since there will be no European football at Old Trafford next term. But he has also been reticent to move from both a personal and professional point of view. Fernandes hasn't wanted to uproot his young family, who are settled in Manchester, and make a major cultural change by moving to Saudi. And he also doesn't want to end his time in major European football yet, even amid United's struggles. As such, he has doubled down on his decision to lead Ruben Amorim's United overhaul, which began this weekend with the £62.5m arrival of Matheus Cunha and is likely to soon see Bryan Mbeumo arrive from Brentford. It is a huge boost to boss Amorim, who has been desperate for Fernandes to STAY - and told Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the club's decision-makers to make up the money elsewhere. Speaking after United ended their post-season tour of Asia with a 3-1 victory over Hong Kong last week, he made his feelings very clear when asked if it was the last supporters had seen of Fernandes in a red shirt. "I don't think so, I don't know for sure. Nobody knows but I don't think so," the Red Devils boss said. "I think he is seeing us taking some actions to change all the things and I think he saw that and I think he wants to stay. "He is saying no to a lot of things but he shows he wants to win. He's really young, he's really good he needs to be in the best league in the world.' Asked if United were in a position to turn down the money, he replied: "Yes, we can find another way to earn money.' Now club chiefs will have to do just that. Chelsea move 'clear' in race to beat Liverpool to stunning £60m transfer
Liverpool are among the top European teams who have been linked with Hugo Ekitike this summer but Chelsea have stepped up their efforts to sign the France Under-21 star Chelsea are said to have stolen a march on Liverpool in the race to bring Hugo Ekitike to the Premier League by advancing in talks with Eintracht Frankfurt over a deal for the Frenchman. The Blues are among a number of top-flight sides looking for a new No.9 this summer and, like the newly minted Premier League champions, have set their sights on Ekitike after watching the 22-year-old break the 20-goal barrier for Frankfurt last season. Liverpool are poised to replace Darwin Nunez with a new frontman as they bid to build on winning the title under Arne Slot in the Dutchman's first season. And while the Reds may have finished well above Chelsea last term, a new report from L'Equipe has revealed that the Londoners have 'ramped up' their efforts to beat their rivals to a deal for Ekitike. It's said that Chelsea are now 'clear' in their attempts to sign the former Paris Saint-Germain striker, who has been valued at £60million by Frankfurt. The Blues are still on the lookout for a new marquee striker to spearhead their frontline next season, despite closing in on a £30m deal for Ipswich Town's Liam Delap. As it stands, Delap, 22, will compete with Nicolas Jackson for a starting spot under Enzo Maresca. But with the Blues back in the Champions League next year, they are pushing hard to add Ekitike to their growing pool of attackers. Landing the France Under-21 star would be a huge coup for Chelsea, who finished fourth in the Premier League and won the Europa Conference League in Maresca's maiden campaign. Axel Hellmann, a Frankfurt board member and the club's former chief executive, recently that confirmed there was strong Premier League interest in Ekitike, speculating that 'half' the clubs in England's top-flight. He said: 'I would love to have him at Frankfurt for another ten years, if possible. 'But we are realistic. He is one of the best high-potential players in Europe at the moment and he is only 22. That means he has a great future. 'He is a clever guy. He loves to listen and learn. I would love him to stay another couple of years. But the market is the market and half of the Premier League clubs are interested in signing him.'

Bruno Fernandes makes final decision over Man Utd exit after 'crazy' offer
Bruno Fernandes was offered a 'crazy' contract by Al Hilal (Picture: Getty) Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has rejected a move to Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal, according to reports. Fernandes, arguably United's best and most important player in the post-Sir Alex Ferguson era, has been weighing up a sensational offer from Al Hilal. The Saudi giants were ready to pay Fernandes around £200m over a three-year period after making him their No. 1 transfer target this summer. Fernandes' camp held positive talks with Al Hilal over the weekend, with Manchester United open to a deal despite his immense influence due to their difficult financial situation. But, according to Fabrizio Romano, Fernandes has now rejected a move to Saudi as he wants to continue 'playing at the top level' in Europe. The 30-year-old's decision will come as welcome news to Manchester United fans who were forced to endure another dismal campaign. The Red Devils finished just 15th in the Premier League and failed to qualify for European football after losing to Tottenham in the Europa League final. Missing out on the Champions League is believed to have cost United around £100m and for that reason Old Trafford bosses were open to selling Fernandes. The Portuguese playmaker has been one of the most influential players in the Premier League since his £47m move from Sporting Lisbon in 2020. Fernandes has scored 62 goals and provided 51 assists in 195 Premier League games and won United's Player of the Year award four times. Ruben Amorim was desperate for Fernandes to stay put but the opportunity to raise around £100m for a 30-year-old would have been too good to refuse for those higher up at the club. Amorim is keen to welcome several of his own signings to Manchester this summer but, as things stand, only has around £100m to spend. United have already triggered the £62.5m release clause of Matheus Cunha and are interested in Brentford's £50-rated Bryan Mbeumo. More Trending But with Fernandes deciding to snub a move to Saudi, Manchester United will need to go down other avenues to raise some cash. They have held talks with Inter Milan over a deal for £72m transfer flop Rasmus Hojlund and are ready to get Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Antony off their books. While Fernandes will not be moving to Saudi Arabia, United goalkeeper Andre Onana has attracted interest from the division and could be sold following an inconsistent season.
