Is fresh dog food better than kibble? We asked vets
I spoke to veterinarians to better understand the claims and promises surrounding fresh dog food and whether it's worth switching your dog's diet. I also gathered their recommendations for fresh dog food brands to consider, as well as options that NBC Select staffers feed their own dogs.
How I picked the best fresh dog food
When shopping for the best fresh dog food, experts recommend keeping in mind the following factors:
Meets AAFCO standards: The most important thing to look for when shopping for pet food in general is whether it's approved by the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), which means an independent lab has tested the food to guarantee safety. 'If the food is not AAFCO approved, this can mean that testing was only done internally, and no regulating body performed a secondary confirmatory test,' says Dr. Miriam Fink, Medical Director at Bond Vet.
Your dog's specific needs: As with every type of dog food, it's important to understand your dog's specific nutritional needs before buying. Consider their age, breed, activity level, allergies and any health conditions they may have. Always look at the brand's packaging and/or website for a guide that indicates how much food your pet needs daily based on their weight and age. You can also check out Balance It, which is run by board-certified veterinary nutritionists and gives detailed information about your dog's diet.
Storage: Fresh dog food is usually refrigerated or frozen, which means you'll need to make sure you have enough space to properly store it. Most brands will state exactly how to store and thaw frozen food and how long it'll last in your fridge or freezer.
Price: Expect fresh dog food to be more expensive than typical store-bought kibble or canned food. Most fresh dog food brands are delivery services, which means cost will be higher due to convenience.
Best fresh dog food of 2025
Best overall: Ollie
Ollie's fresh food is made alongside veterinary nutritionists who help create balanced, human-grade recipes that meet AAFCO standards (more on human-grade dog food below). Plus, it delivers meals right to your door on a regular schedule. NBC Select senior manager of commerce analytics Amanda Smith feeds Ollie to her picky, 3-year-old rat terrier Mac and says it's been a 'game changer' for his diet. 'He's never been very food motivated and suddenly he's begging for meal time,' she says.
Smith says the process from start to finish took only a few minutes. First, you'll need to take a short quiz about your dog's current weight, ideal weight, spay/neuter status and activity level. You can choose between three plans: full fresh (pouches that include real meat, fruits, veggies and grains), mixed (half portion of Ollie's fresh food and half of Ollie's dry food) and half fresh (half portion of Ollie's fresh food to mix with your dog's typical food). Here's a cost breakdown for each plan:
Full fresh: $22 per week (small dogs), $55 per week (medium dogs), $69 per week (large dogs)
Mixed bowl: $19 per week (small dogs), $45 per week (medium dogs), $59 per week (large dogs)
Half fresh: $15 per week (small dogs), $38 per week (medium dogs), $41 per week (large dogs)
You can choose from up to five fresh recipes, including pork, chicken, beef, lamb and turkey. Store your fresh food in the freezer and defrost it in the fridge at least 24 hours before your pup's mealtime, according to the brand. If your dog isn't ready to start an all-fresh meal, Ollie also has kibble options that you can add to your meal plan and mix with the fresh food. Ollie also has treats and supplements to add to your shipment.
Dr. Abel Gonzalez, a veterinarian and the clinical director at Dutch, a pet telehealth company, recommends JustFoodForDogs due to its high-protein food with a lower calorie count, which makes it great for older or less active dogs. It has more than a dozen recipes, all of which have one source of protein for a limited ingredients diet, including turkey, venison and lamb.
You can choose between four main categories: Fresh Frozen, JustFresh (comes in resealable packaging), PantryFresh (shelf stable) and DIY Homemade (includes a recipe, but you'll need to supply the ingredients). My 7-year-old havanese and bichon frise mix, Bella, is obsessed with the brand's JustFresh recipes. I mix a spoonful with her regular kibble once a day and I can tell she likes it much more than her canned wet food — she's always begging for food once meal time comes around. Each JustFresh meal comes in a handy resealable pouch and one package lasts me about a week at the rate I'm feeding her.
I've also recently started incorporating the Fresh Frozen meals to Bella's diet (I alternate them with the JustFresh meals). I love that the Fresh Frozen options come in a ton of flavors to give Bella a good amount of variety, and it lasts up to 18 months in the freezer, so I'm always stocked up. When thawed, the meals stay fresh in the original package for up to seven days (five days after opening the packaging). You can purchase pouches individually or choose to autoship your dog's food, which will ship to your home at the frequency you choose (anywhere between one- and 12-week intervals, and your order ships within three to five business days).
This subscription-based service delivers fresh dog food to your door. Before you place an order, you'll fill out a questionnaire that helps the brand determine a meal plan that best fits your dog's nutritional needs. Each meal then comes pre-portioned for your dog's needs based on their age, weight, breed, activity level and build.
You can store The Farmer's Dog pouches in your fridge or freezer, and each one lasts up to four days in the fridge after you thaw it, according to the brand. It's a favorite of former NBC Select social editor Sadhana Daruvuri, who feeds this service to her 3-year-old maltese and poodle mix, Bandit. 'I knew friends who tried it and their dogs were all big fans, so I did a trial with Bandit and it was obvious he liked it way more than his kibble,' she says. (Bandit typically eats the turkey, beef and chicken meals.) Plan pricing varies based on your dog's weight, breed, activity level and more.
Nom Nom creates a fresh meal plan based on your dog's health and nutritional goals, including weight management, stomach issues and skin sensitivities. You'll fill out a questionnaire about your dog's breed, weight, age and diet-related issues (including whether they're a picky eater or have food allergies), and Nom Nom will recommend the recipe that best fits their needs. All meals are pre-portioned for each dog's unique caloric needs and you can select up to four recipes for each shipment.
If you're on the fence about which recipes to get, you can purchase a sampler pack of four recipes (beef, chicken, turkey and pork). All meals come frozen, and you can store them in the fridge for up to 5 days and in the freezer for up to 6 months, according to the brand.
Petplate will create a custom meal plan for your pet based on a short quiz. Each meal is also perfectly portioned for your pup to ensure they get the right amount of nutrients. Best of all, you can mix-and-match recipes in your dog's meal plan, so you aren't limited to only certain recipes (pricing will change based on which protein you choose; for example, venison and lamb are slightly more expensive).
The brand has four main plans: FreshBaked (shelf-stable with a crunch), FreshCombo (a mix of baked and cooked textures), FreshCooked (signature cooked plan) and Toppers (signature plan offered in smaller portions). There are two FreshBaked recipes to choose from (beef and chicken), and six FreshCooked recipes, including turkey, venison, lamb and pork.
Best with whole ingredients: Spot & Tango
Spot & Tango's fresh recipes are cooked in small batches and delivered in pouches. Fresh recipes include turkey and quinoa, beef and brown rice, and lamb and sweet potato. You'll first need to complete an initial questionnaire that asks about your dog's weight, age, breed, activity level and any health issues, which the brand uses to determine your pup's ideal meal plan and caloric intake. Spot & Tango also has its own version of kibble, called Unkibble, that's made up of a dehydrated meat, starch, fruit and veggies and doesn't have any preservatives, fillers or additives, according to the brand. You can add snacks, including turkey strips and cheese bites, to your delivery for an additional fee, too.
Frequently asked questions
What is fresh dog food?
Fresh dog food usually refers to minimally processed meals made with whole, natural ingredients like meats, vegetables and grains, often cooked gently to retain nutrients, says Gonzalez. Most fresh dog food is labeled as 'human-grade,' meaning the ingredients and preparation methods meet FDA standards for human consumption. 'It often indicates higher quality ingredients, stricter safety standards and better overall nutrition compared to conventional pet food,' says Gonzalez.
The biggest difference between fresh dog food and regular kibble is that fresh food is usually refrigerated or frozen, which helps it last longer and can help preserve the nutrients in the food without needing artificial preservatives, says Gonzalez. Make sure you are properly thawing and storing frozen food to maintain its safety and nutritional integrity; most brands will indicate how to properly store and thaw frozen food and how long it'll last in your fridge or freezer.
Is fresh dog food better than kibble?
Fresh food is commonly associated with 'high quality' and 'good ingredients,' but it's typically just refrigerated food. 'Refrigerated food can be a great option for some pets, and the most important thing is feeding something your pet likes and is safe for them,' says Fink. I do not think it is 'better' than regular kibble or wet food because the main deciding factors are whether they are safe for their pet.'
However, it all depends on your dog. Fresh food can be tastier for your pet, which helps switch up their diet if they're a picky eater. Plus, fresh food may have fewer preservatives compared to kibble or canned food, which benefits those with sensitive stomachs or allergies.
What is the difference between fresh food and raw food?
The difference is pretty self explanatory: Fresh dog food is cooked, while raw food is uncooked. However, all of the vets we've spoken to do not recommend raw food, so even if it's frozen and labeled 'fresh,' you should not feed your pet raw food. 'Just like raw food can make us sick with bacteria, viruses and parasites, it can make pets sick, too,' says Fink.
Also, even if these organisms pass through your dog without causing them harm, there is still a risk to any young children who put their hands in their mouth — they could become sick from salmonella and other bacteria, says Dr. Nicole Savageau, a board-certified veterinarian at The Vets, a mobile veterinary service.
How can you safely switch your dog's diet?
Switching your dog to a new diet takes time and patience; otherwise, you might risk them getting bored with their new food quickly or upsetting their stomach. When adjusting your dog to new foods, the veterinarians I spoke to recommend the following tips:

The best women's sneakers for wide feet, according to podiatrists
If you have wide feet, you are likely no stranger to the feeling of tightness and pinching that comes from a new pair of shoes.. But having wide feet shouldn't stop you from having your Cinderella moment. You may just need to focus on sneakers that have a wide width to find the perfect running or walking shoe. 'The right shoe will feel comfortable, provide adequate space for your toes to move freely, and support your foot's natural shape and alignment,' says Dr. Isaac Tabari, a board-certified foot and ankle doctor and owner of the NYC Podiatry Center of Excellence. Thankfully, there are plenty of sneaker brands — like New Balance, Hoka and Brooks — that make shoes specifically for people with wide feet. I interviewed podiatrists and included their picks along with highly-rated options and NBC Select staff recommendations that come in wide widths. Want more from NBC Select? Sign up for our newsletter, The Selection, and shop smarter. How I picked the best sneakers for women with wide feet 'A wide width shoe offers more room throughout the entire shoe — including the toe box, midsole and heel,' says Tabari. But with so many wide width sneakers on the market, it can be tough to know what to focus on when shopping. Here are the things podiatrists suggest paying close attention to: Support: The whole point of getting shoes wide enough for your feet is to make sure they're comfortable. So along with width look for shoes with arch support and a cushioned sole, says Tabari. You can also keep an eye out on whether or not the shoes are wide enough to accommodate orthotic inserts or insoles should you need them. 'These features can help prevent injuries such as plantar fasciitis or stress fractures,' says Tabari. Materials: Since the material of the shoes can impact your comfort, look for options with a flexible upper like knit or mesh. This will provide more room for wide feet to move and will prevent you from feeling restricted in your sneakers. Toe box: Some sneakers have more of a pointed toe. Podiatrists recommend avoiding these if you have wide feet, as they may pinch around your toes. Instead, look for shoes with a round, square or wide toe box. This will allow you the space you need for your toes to splay and spread without rubbing against the side of your sneakers and potentially causing blisters, says Dr. Alissa Kuizinas, a board-certified podiatrist in Boston. To recommend the best women's wide sneakers for running and/or walking, I asked podiatrists to share their favorites and included NBC Select staff favorites that come in wide width, along with a few highly rated options. I have wide feet and these are my go-to sneakers — I've run multiple half marathons and they have never felt tight or constrictive. Hoka is known for its shock-absorbing soles and supportive uppers. The toe box is nearly as wide as the rest of the shoe, so your toes have plenty of room to splay out. The shoe's bottom has a rocker shape for smoother heel-to-toe transitions and the upper is made from breathable mesh, according to the brand. This shoe is also available in a version for men. Featured in our roundup of the best walking shoes, this style from Ryka comes in a wide width and is an NBC Select staff favorite. 'I've never had dedicated walking shoes before, and this pair from Ryka showed me just how much of a difference they can make,' says Sadhana Daruvuri, former NBC Select social editor. She wears them while walking her dog, in the park or around New York City to run errands. 'Even when I'm in them for hours, my feet still feel cushioned and comfortable.' The lace-up sneakers are specifically designed around the shape of women's feet, so the brand gave them a narrower heel, a roomy toe box and soft cushioning in the midsole. They also have a grippy rubber outsole, arch support built into the insole and extra cushioning in the forefoot and heel. At under $100, these sneakers are an affordable wide width option. They have a breathable mesh upper and gel technology in the heel to provide extra cushioning and comfort, according to the brand. The shoe, which has a 4.4-star average rating from over 400 reviews on Amazon, also has deep treads, making it a good running shoe for various environments — like parks, streets and trails. Skechers' slip-on walking sneakers are one of the more affordable options on my list and have a 4.5-star average rating from nearly 100,000 reviews on Amazon. They have a mesh upper so your feet don't get sweaty, lightweight cushioning and come in narrow, medium and wide widths. The sneakers also have flexible, grippy outsoles and memory foam insoles. Though these sneakers don't technically come in a wide width, NBC Select SEO editor Nikki Brown vouches for the fact that they work on wider feet. 'My feet are very flat and wide and these shoes leave lots of room for my toes,' she says. 'I love how sturdy they feel for workouts and casual walks and the fact that they're also stylish is a major plus.' The molded heel offers support and the breathable upper is lightweight, according to Nike. Like the running shoes from New Balance on my list, these walking sneakers come in wide and extra wide widths. They have a stylish vintage look, in my opinion, but deliver on comfort, too. They have a padded footbed and rubber sole for traction. They are also reinforced around the ankle for extra support as you walk, according to the brand. Best for overpronators Another pick from our best walking shoes roundup, these shoes are a supportive stability shoe that help people who overpronate. The sneaker has a light, springy feel, according to the brand, a cushioned insole and a rubber outsole. Not only does this shoe come in wide widths, it is available in an extra wide width, too. The shoe also has a leather upper that looks crisp and is highly durable, according to Saucony. Tabari likes New Balance sneakers for those with wide feet because they offer both a wide width and an extra wide width. These sneakers have the brand's Fresh Foam X midsole to provide extra cushioning without increasing the weight of the shoe, according to the brand. They have a rocker profile to propel you forward and a rubber sole for traction. The shoe also goes up to a size 13 for those with larger feet. These shoes don't technically come in a wide width, but they are designed with a wide toe box, says Kuizinas. Similar to the sneakers from Hoka, these have a rocker-shaped sole that helps to propel you forward as you run and the soles are made with compression foam for comfort. The upper is made with a flexible and breathable mesh material. Most durable This sneaker made our list of best running shoes thanks to the durability of its carbon rubber outer and cushioned sole. The shoe comes in both regular and wide widths and goes up to a size 12. The heel of this shoe contains Mizuno's energy foam, which provides cushioning and energy return, according to the brand. The upper is seamless to prevent rubbing and friction as you move. What happens when shoes aren't wide enough for your feet? When your shoes aren't wide enough to accommodate your feet, a number of problems can arise. First, you'll likely get blisters where the shoe rubs against your feet. Shoes that are too narrow can also put unnecessary pressure on your feet. 'Wide shoes provide more room for the toes to spread out naturally, reducing pressure and friction on the toes and forefoot,' says Tabari. 'Tight shoes can restrict blood flow to the toes, leading to discomfort and even potential circulation issues.' Other issues caused by shoes that aren't wide though include ingrown toenails, bunions and cramping. When walking or running in shoes that are too narrow for your feet, you may also start overcompensating to avoid discomfort, says Kuizinas. This can lead to back pain, rolling your ankle or a number of other injuries. How to tell if your shoes are too narrow Not sure if your sneakers are wide enough for your feet? 'If you experience any rubbing on the big toe or pinky, your shoes are too narrow,' says Kuizinas. 'You should be able to wiggle your toes properly in your shoe.' Another area where people commonly notice discomfort in narrow shoes is across the middle of the foot. If your foot feels cramped or the upper feels too tight there, you need a wider width. The best mineral sunscreens for dark skin, tested by our editors
For a long time, I'd given up on mineral sunscreens — as someone with dark skin, it felt impossible to find options that didn't leave a white cast. This problem exists for some chemical sunscreens too, but mineral ingredients are harder to blend out, in my experience. Thankfully, some mineral formulas have improved, and the range of options has expanded, so we decided to put some to the test. Check out our favorite picks below as well as expert advice for choosing one of your own. How I picked the best mineral sunscreens for dark skin Mineral sunscreens all contain zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide, which are the active ingredients that help protect your skin from UVA and UVB rays (more about these ingredients below). Besides avoiding the dreaded white cast, I kept a few other things in mind while compiling this list: Minimum SPF of 30: SPF, also known as sun protection factor, measures a formula's protection level against the sun's rays — the American Academy of Dermatology recommends an SPF of 30 or higher. The SPF number indicates the amount of time the sunscreen will prevent UV damage compared to the amount of time with no sunscreen; for example, while wearing a sunscreen with an SPF of 30, it would take you 30 times longer to burn than if you weren't wearing sunscreen at all. Zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide: These are the key active ingredients in mineral sunscreens. Water-resistant options: Water-resistant sunscreens are great for workouts, swimming, and any other activities where you may be sweating or getting wet. I included options that provide a water resistance of at least 40 minutes. How we tested the best mineral sunscreens for dark skin Our NBC Select staff tested over 100 sunscreens for six weeks to find the very best formulas for summer (and beyond). While testing, we tried dozens of mineral sunscreens and of those, we found some brown skin-friendly formulas for different skin types and activities. We tested on a range of brown skin tones and skin types, including dry, oily, sensitive and acne-prone skin, and wore the sunscreens to work, to the gym, outdoors, and more. Here is some of the key criteria we kept in mind while testing: Consistency: What's the sunscreen's texture like? Is it invisible? Which skin type does it work best for? Appearance: Is there any white cast upon application? If so, how long does it take to absorb/fade? Does it reappear when sweating? Usage: How often did you use the sunscreen? What did you do while wearing it? Which activities are the sunscreen best suited for? Wear over time: Did the sunscreen drip or melt throughout the day? Did it get greasy as the day went on? Price: Would we rebuy these formulas with our own money? Would we purchase them at full price, on a discount, or not at all? Want more from NBC Select? Sign up for our newsletter, The Selection, and shop smarter. The best mineral sunscreens for dark skin in 2025 Below I gathered our favorite mineral sunscreens for dark skin, including tested picks from NBC Select staff, products from previous coverage, and top-rated options from bestselling brands across the web. Best overall When a sunscreen claims to have a 'universal tint', my guard automatically goes up, but Herbivore's Star Seed sunscreen proved my doubts wrong. It's formulated to work with all skin types, hydrates the skin's moisture barrier with prebiotics, and evens skin tone with vitamin C, according to the brand. It has a creamy texture that feels more like a primer than sunscreen, and a light, orange-ish tint. Although I can't speak to exactly how universal the tint is, the sunscreen absorbs within minutes and gives me zero white cast while blending really well into my skin. I also love how well it holds up on my oilier skin — even on my shiniest days, the most I'll get is a soft glow as my oil starts to break through after a few hours of wear. The sunscreen can also double as a primer. This sunscreen is another one of my mineral favorites, but fair warning — you may need to wait a little bit for this one to absorb. NBC Select commerce editor Cory Fernandez was also initially worried by the sunscreen's subtle tint, but says it blended into his skin and around his facial hair perfectly within a few minutes, sans white cast. It has a very fluid, lightweight texture that sits on your skin without feeling too heavy, and is gentle enough to use on sensitive skin. Fernandez, who has combination skin, likes that it doesn't cause irritation or burn his eyes while walking outside. I especially recommend this sunscreen for anyone with drier skin, since it's full of hydrators, including hyaluronic acid and niacinamide. Both NBC Select commerce editor Jordan Bowman and NBC Select editorial operations associate Jem Alabi were pleasantly surprised by how well this sunscreen worked for their skin tones. 'It has a purple or pink colored hue and I thought it would leave a noticeable white cast as I applied it to my face, but it blended in fairly easily,' says Bowman. He also likes that it didn't leave much of a cast over his facial hair, which he says has been an issue with other formulas he's tried, and that the sunscreen didn't run white during his sweaty, intensive tennis games. Alabi, who's used and loved Dr. Loretta's products in the past, says the sunscreen's light, moisturizer-like texture is one of the few American formulas that doesn't leave her greasy. It has ectoin, for added hydration, and antioxidants to shield your skin from free radical damage, and protects against UVA, UVB, and HEV blue light rays, according to the brand. Cerave is an NBC Select-favorite brand brand — this sunscreen comes recommended by board-certified dermatologist Dr. Michelle Henry in our roundup of the best sunscreens for dark skin. The sunscreen has a blend of yellow, red and black iron oxides, which together create a tint that blends out on all skin tones, according to the brand. It's also noncomedogenic and fragrance-free, making it great for sensitive skin, and uses ceramides to hydrate and plump the skin. Alabi first saw this Good Weather Skin option in an ad starring one of her favorite Black models, which instantly made her curious about the sunscreen's effectiveness on darker skin. She has since tried it, and says the sunscreen's fluid texture and dewy finish is 'perfect for summer.' She also loves that it blends in quickly. The sunscreen is made with niacinamide and seabuckthorn oil to help improve the texture and appearance of your skin, and squalane for hydration, according to the brand. As someone who prefers a very matte look, Alabi says she likes to use a bit of setting powder over this sunscreen to help diffuse the shine a bit. This sunscreen has a tinted finish that's designed to seamlessly absorb into skin of all tones, according to the brand. Along with the usual mineral active ingredients, Dr. Few's formula includes green tea to reduce free radical damage and avocado oil to add moisture to the skin. It has a lightweight cream texture and is also great for oily skin, with reviewers saying it helps to reduce shine as the day goes by. Good Molecules' Sheer Mineral Sunscreen has a hydrating formula that uses hyaluronic acid, grapeseed oil and tucuma seed butter to lock moisture into the skin, according to the brand. Although its lightweight, non-greasy formula may take a few minutes to fully absorb, it dries down into a dewy finish that former NBC Select reporter Bianca Alavarez says sits well under makeup. It's also noncomedogenic, making it a solid and affordable option for acne-prone skin. How to shop for mineral sunscreens for dark skin As with any other skin care product, it's important to keep your skin type and concerns in mind when picking a mineral sunscreen. Here are a few more tips to consider while shopping for one: Choose sunscreens with an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 30, which the Skin Cancer Foundation says protects against 97% of the sun's rays. For oily or acne-prone skin, be sure to check for 'noncomedogenic' labels, which means the product doesn't contain ingredients that are more likely to clog pores, like mineral oil or petroleum. For dry skin, keep an eye out for hydrating formulas that include ingredients like hyaluronic acid, vitamin E, aloe vera and more. If you'll be swimming or sweating, choose sunscreens labeled as water-resistant, with at least 40 minutes of resistance for good measure. Lastly, to avoid a white cast, look for lightweight, sheerer formulas that are more likely to seamlessly absorb into your skin (and always check reviews). Why trust NBC Select? I'm an associate SEO reporter for NBC Select, covering skin care and wellness topics like sunscreens for dark skin and acne spot treatments. For this piece, myself and the NBC select staff tested dozens of mineral sunscreens to find the formulas that work best for dark skin.
