The new £17 tax tourists will have to pay to visit popular Greek islands

Daily Mail24-07-2025
Travellers heading on a trip to a Greek island this summer may find themselves hit with an unexpected expense.
Greece 's new 'sustainable tourism fee' has now been introduced to cruise passengers from July 21.
Between June 1 and September 30, tourists disembarking a ship at Mykonos and Santorini will have to pay €20 each, equivalent to £17.35.
The fee decreases in October and between April 1 and May 31, during the shoulder season, to €12 (£10.41).
Between November 1 to March 31, the charge lowers to €4.
Charges also apply to other ports on Greek islands and travellers will be charged €5 (£4.34) during the summer months.
While in the winter, cruise tourists will be hit with a €1 (87p) charge, and in shoulder season €3 (£2.60).
The new fee will be charged per passenger and will apply for each port they disembark at.
It will be down to the cruise company to declare and pay the charge on a quarterly basis.
Will Sarson, a cruise expert at Riviera Travel, urged people to check what costs are included in their cruise bookings.
He said: 'Preparation and conducting checks are key to preventing unexpected charges.
'Being charged for unprecedented costs can leave you short of spending money, restricting your ability to make the most of your trip.
'Tourist tax and port fees are among the costs that could catch you out, so it's crucial to be aware of these fees when going on a cruise.
'While these fees may have been included in the cruise fare, thoroughly review the cruise line's terms and conditions to be aware of what costs are included.
'If you're still uncertain, contact the cruise line for confirmation. Being aware of what fees have been paid will give you a clearer picture of your finances for the holiday.'
The new charges have been put in place to help tackle over crowding caused by tourism.
Mykonos is expecting to host 900 cruise ships this season with tourist arrivals expected to reach 1.5 million.
While footage from Santorini showed thousands of selfie-hunting holidaymakers have packed the narrow streets in a desperate bid to capture sunset views adored by influencers.
However, the tax hasn't been welcomed by the port authorities in Mykonos. Speaking to Greek Reporter, Athanasios Kousathanas-Megas, the president of the Mykonos Port Fund, said that the tax was a 'curse' for the island's economy.
He said: 'I believe that the price difference will create problems in choosing a cruise ship from 2026.'

‘I'm a flight attendant — there's one thing I would never do when sitting on a plane'

A former flight attendant and TikTok creator has shared a warning about the window seat Cabin crew understand the realities of air travel better than most passengers. Their knowledge stems from years of hands-on experience rather than just theoretical training, which is why their advice about flying should be taken seriously. When a flight attendant reveals what they personally avoid doing whilst aboard an aircraft, it's definitely worth listening. ‌ Many travellers book their preferred seats well in advance, hoping for a more pleasant journey. Most flyers opt for either window seats to lean against or aisle positions for additional leg room, but one former flight attendant has issued a stark warning about choosing the window spot, reports the Express. ‌ TikTok user and former cabin crew member Cierra Mistt has raised serious concerns about window seats and explained her reasoning. ‌ Breeding ground for bacteria Cierra explained: "While it is true that cleaners do come on most after passengers are done getting off the plane, they don't do a deep clean like you might think they do. "In fact, they only did that during Covid, and the only thing they really deep-cleaned was the tray tables and seatbelts. Nowadays, it's mostly just to tidy up and getting the trash off the floor." ‌ Noting that some carriers provide sanitising wipes when passengers board, she continued: "If I were you, instead of wiping down the tray tables and seatbelts that they just cleaned, I would use that wipe to clean off the window that you're next to, because just like the bathroom floor, those things have never been cleaned." Taking to the comments section of the video, most viewers urged others to always pack cleaning wipes to sanitise the window area. One viewer remarked: "I can't believe they get away with not cleaning anything! That is horrible!". Another commented: "I always clean the window and the head seat. Sometimes looks greasy." ‌ A third confirmed: " I can verify this. They didn't even remove the melted chocolate from my seat and tray left by the previous passenger before I sat down. I had to sort it myself." Someone else explained: "You have less than seven minutes to clean a whole plane. Sometimes, only two people are there to clean a plane." ‌ Defending the airlines, another viewer countered: "They do a deep clean and search EVERY single night, including disinfecting everything with cleaner." According to Aviation Job Search, standard cleaning takes place between flights, whilst aircraft also undergo regular thorough cleaning to uphold high hygiene standards. These comprehensive sessions involve scrubbing cabin walls, wiping down overhead compartments, and clearing out air vents. Seats and cushions are meticulously hoovered and disinfected to eliminate any concealed grime or debris. ‌ Is the window seat actually the safest? Specialists at Travel & Leisure disclosed that choosing a window seat might be the most effective method to avoid catching illnesses from other travellers. They explained: "A 2018 study said that window seats are best because they're the most isolated (other than in certain ultra-luxe first-class mini cabins). "Window-side passengers are seated next to just one passenger, with seats separating them from the people in front and behind. Most importantly, they are furthest from the aisle, where crew and other passengers can frequently pass by." Additional studies also discovered that travellers positioned nearer to the aisle are more prone to standing up mid-flight, boosting their likelihood of coming into contact with bacteria whilst moving throughout the aircraft. Given the research available, it appears the window seat offers the greatest protection against picking up bugs, though it remains wise to take precautions and clean your space before departure.

Cruise passengers' Hawaii dream trip turns into night of hell sleeping on hard gym floor

Hundreds of cruise passengers were left sleeping on a hard, gymnasium floor after the ship suddenly sailed away without them amid a tsunami warning. Six hundred people were left behind when Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America pulled away from Hilo Harbor two hours ahead of schedule on Tuesday. The ship left early following an emergency alert triggered by a massive 8.8-magnitude earthquake. Many passengers were on ship excursions when they received emergency alerts for a tsunami and were unable to make it back to the boat in time. Tiffany Oliver was among those who didn't make it back and was forced to spend the night on the floor of Waiakea High School. 'We were stranded by Norwegian Cruise Line. Our tour bus arrived five minutes before the time they stated they were leaving and they pulled off anyway,' Oliver said. She added that they had, 'no clothes, no food, no nothing'. 'Norwegian, you left us stranded and then you have no plan for our survival,' Oliver said. 'You could care less about your guests.' Passenger Tiffany Oliver was among those forced to sleep on the ground after Norwegian Cruise Line's Pride of America left without her Another passenger described her fury at being left behind at the high school, branding the experience 'unbelievable'. 'I understand there are 9 buses of 45+ people stuck and no one who came out 5 minutes ago into the high school gym where they took us to address the passengers knows what the heck is going on,' Sharyn Stewart Dickersen wrote. 'He [NCL representative] claims they have people working to find hotel rooms, etc. All the NCL reps are completely worthless!' Another traveler known as Mandy described how her family was split up after the ship departed leaving her on land. 'They're terrified for us - we're terrified for us,' she said. Footage from Hawaii News Now showed families, including young children, stranded at the port, watching as the massive cruise ship pulled away just before 4pm local time. Other passengers who were on board as the ship departed captured video footage of the passengers desperately attempting to get on board. Many of the abandoned passengers had paid between $1,435 and over $4,000 for the week-long cruise around the Hawaiian islands, which doesn't include flights, shore excursions or additional fees. Norwegian Cruise Line later confirmed that the ship had departed early, 'to prioritize the safety of our guests and crew' after the state of Hawaii declared a state of emergency and issued a tsunami warning. 'Before departure, all guests were notified via SMS and advised to seek higher ground and follow instructions from local authorities if they were unable to return to the ship in time for its departure,' the statement continued. 'Guests participating in NCL shore excursions were brought directly to a local high school, a designated safe location in Hilo, where refreshments were provided for their comfort and well-being.' Those who had been on official NCL shore excursions were shuttled to a nearby high school gym, where they slept on the floor overnight. Another passenger who was stranded, Eric Anderson, told KHON2 that the local Hawaiian people were extremely hospitable and all came together to take care of the passengers. 'It really is a testament to that Aloha spirit,' he told the outlet. As of Wednesday, the tsunami warning had been downgraded and no major damage was reported. The ship returned to dock to pick up the stranded passengers. Many posted an emotional update on TikTok, confirming she made it back safely into her cabin where she can't wait to shower and sleep.
