Michigan basketball schedules blockbuster Duke game in D.C. for February 2026
Though Michigan football tends to draw the most attention, Dusty May and Michigan basketball are certainly working to wrest much of the offseason hullaballoo away.
Whether it's the addition of Yaxel Lendeborg, despite him appearing to be NBA draft-bound, or getting top-tier talent via high school recruiting, May has completely overhauled expectations in Ann Arbor in short order. And now, there will be another marquee matchup to go along with the rest of it.
The Wolverines were already set to face an ACC team, Wake Forest, with a game held at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit this season. But Michigan basketball announced on Tuesday morning that it has finalized a late-season nonconference game against Duke to be held in Washington D.C. on February 21.
The two storied programs are best known for meeting in the NCAA Tournament Championship Game back in the Fab Five era, but they last met 13 years ago in Durham.
Full release:
In conjunction with the Gazelle Group, the University of Michigan men's basketball team announced today (Tuesday, June 24) its inclusion in the Duel in The District against Duke on Saturday (Feb. 21) at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
Scheduled near the tail end of the Big Ten regular season, the Wolverines meet the Blue Devils for the first time in 13 years. The last meeting was during the 2013 ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham. After falling behind by 10 at the half (32-22), U-M matched Duke in the second half (47-47) but was unable to overcome that first-half deficit, falling 79-69 (Dec. 4). Overall, U-M holds an 8-22 record against Duke.
The Duel in The District marks the seventh neutral-site game between Michigan and Duke. Three of the previous six have been during the NCAA Tournament, including the 1992 national championship, the 1964 Final Four and the 2011 second round, when U-M fell 73-71 as a late game-tying Darius Morris lay-up rattled off the rim. The last neutral game was in the 2011 Maui Invitational (Nov. 22) -- an 82-75 Duke win.
Michigan makes its way back to the nation's capital for the first time since participating in the Coaches vs. Racism match-up against Prairie View A&M (W, 77-49; Nov. 13, 2021). The Wolverines return to Capital One Arena for the first time since winning four games in four days to claim the 2017 Big Ten Tournament. That year, U-M went on its championship run after being involved in a team plane crash while leaving for the conference tournament.
The Maize and Blue are guided by Dusty May, who in his first season led the Wolverines to a 27-10 record, won the Big Ten Tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16 for a sixth straight NCAA Tournament. Duke is led by head coach Jon Scheyer, who closed his third season with the Blue Devils posting a 35-4 record, winning the ACC (19-1) regular season and tournament titles before falling to Houston, 70-67, in the Final Four.
All ticketing information, television details and tip time will be announced later. However, for early access to tickets before the public sale, sign up for email updates here.
Whoever wins the game will certainly have a big advantage when it comes to NCAA Tournament seeding.

Kendrick Perkins Criticized For 'Pathetic' Cooper Flagg Comparison
Kendrick Perkins Criticized For 'Pathetic' Cooper Flagg Comparison originally appeared on The Spun. It's not a mystery, Cooper Flagg will be the No. 1 pick in this week's NBA Draft. With that said, ESPN's Kendrick Perkins has shared his wild player comparison for the Duke phenom. Advertisement Flagg had an incredible freshman season at Duke, averaging 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds and 4.2 assists per game. Although the Blue Devils fell short in the Final Four, there's no doubt Flagg proved himself as a true game-changer. Even though Flagg hasn't played a single game in the NBA yet, Perkins compared him to two legends during ESPN's draft coverage on Tuesday night. Perkins said Flagg is LeBron James and Kevin Garnett's nonexistent child. No, we're not kidding. "This is how I look at Cooper Flagg," Perkins said. "If LeBron James and Kevin Garnett had a baby, you'd get Cooper Flagg." Advertisement Don't worry, Perkins tried to explained his player comparison for Flagg a few moments later. "When you think about LeBron James, you think of a complete basketball player. He [Flagg] led the team in everything. That's a LeBron James type of thing," Perkins continued. "When you talk about his passion, his tenacity, I'm watching KG. He plays at a high level. We don't give players like Cooper Flagg enough credit. I think it's a skill to have a high motor like he has." (Photo by Brian Babineau/NBAE via Getty Images)NBA fans wasted no time ripping Perkins for his assessment of Flagg. "I don't think Perk has ever watched Cooper play basketball," one fan said. Advertisement "This guy really is doing draft coverage as well. Sigh. The mute button gonna get a heavy workout," a second fan wrote. "This guy is truly pathetic. That made literally no sense," another fan commented. Unfortunately for NBA fans sick of Perkins' analysis, they won't be able to escape him that easily. Perkins will be on ESPN's main set for the NBA Draft on Wednesday night. He'll be joined by Malika Andrews, Jay Bilas, Andraya Carter and Shams Charania. Ex-St. John's star RJ Luis on cusp of NBA draft possibilities he once couldn't have imagined
Four years ago, RJ Luis Jr. couldn't have imagined this. Forget playing in the NBA. Even big-time college basketball was far from a given. Advertisement Luis held just two Division I scholarship offers, from Northeastern and Lamar University. He didn't want to settle, so the Miami native opted to do a prep year at Mount Zion Prep in Maryland. That's when everything changed. 'Once I went to prep school, I kind of made that jump and started to figure out myself and my work ethic,' he recalled in a phone interview with The Post. 'Everything just clicked. Since then, it's been a gradual [climb], improving and getting better as a player. Advertisement 'I wouldn't change it. The stuff that we go through in life is what makes us. It's just super cool to see all my hard work paying off.' The former St. John's star is on the cusp of a professional career, a projected second-round pick in this week's NBA Draft. He worked out for 18 teams and took part in the scouting combine in Chicago. The past few months have been a whirlwind for the 6-foot-7 wing. Advertisement 3 RJ Luis Jr. handles the ball during the 2025 NBA Draft Combine on May 15, 2025 NBAE via Getty Images In March, he became the first Johnnie to be named the Big East Player of the Year since Walter Berry in 1986. He led St. John's to its first Big East Tournament title since 2000 as the Most Outstanding Player of the tournament. Afterward, he called it the best week of his life. But the following weekend, second-seeded St. John's was upset by Arkansas in the second round of the NCAA Tournament and Luis struggled through a nightmarish 3-for-17 shooting performance. NBAE via Getty Images Luis declared for the NBA Draft and entered the transfer portal a week after that disappointment. There was some thought he could return to school — top transfers were getting upward of $3 million — but Luis opted to stick with his initial plan of going pro. 'The money in the NBA is night and day compared to college. It wasn't a hard decision,' Luis said. 'My goal was to do the same thing at St. John's my sophomore year, but injuries held me back. I think I had an amazing year this year. [This was] ultimately the end goal, to play in the NBA and stick there.' Luis has been a much-debated prospect in this draft. Teams like his athleticism, versatility and scoring ability. But his 3-point shot and decision-making need work. He will have the ball in his hands less frequently on the next level. 3 St. John's Red Storm guard RJ Luis Jr. reacts after hitting a 3-point shot during the team's opening NCAA Tournament game. Charles Wenzelberg / New York Post 'It's a tough thing, but he's gotta go from a star on his team to a role player,' an NBA scout familiar with Luis said. 'Tough transition, so he's probably going to have to get some G-League reps, and go from there. Be a consistent shooter. Advertisement 'Is he one of the best 75 draft prospects in this draft and is he one of the best 500 players in the world, where he should be on some kind of NBA contract?' Said a second scout: 'He's going to have to make some modifications to his game. He's a two-way guy for sure, because he can score the ball. But he has to learn to score the ball on my terms, as opposed to his.' Luis has been somewhat of a target since that Arkansas loss. He was criticized for that performance and later questioned for not cashing in on his last year of college eligibility. He's heard the doubters. Advertisement 'One hundred percent, but that's how life is. You're always going to have people rooting against you,' Luis said. 'I'm fully positive. I know the amount of work I put in.' Luis has come a long way from those two Division I scholarship offers. His first season at St. John's was marred by injuries, a fractured left hand and nagging shin splints. He wasn't able to do much basketball-wise last summer following surgery on each shin, but still had a sensational junior season, leading the Johnnies to their best season in 25 years. If he is selected, he would become St. John's first player to hear his name called since Sir'Dominic Pointer (53rd overall by the Cavaliers) in 2015. 'It would be the same thing as winning the regular-season championship and Big East Tournament and getting a bid to the [NCAA] Tournament,' he said. 'To be able to leave my little bit of a legacy at St. John's, just make that fan base proud.'

LeBron James' Personal Opinion of Cooper Flagg Made Extremely Clear
LeBron James' Personal Opinion of Cooper Flagg Made Extremely Clear originally appeared on Athlon Sports. Cooper Flagg is undoubtedly the best prospect in the NBA Draft class of 2025, so it's no surprise that he is projected to be the No. 1 pick and go to the Dallas Mavericks. Sure enough, there are already high expectations for him even before he sets foot into the pros. Advertisement The 18-year-old forward has already been compared to the likes of Scottie Pippen, Kawhi Leonard, Jayson Tatum, Lamar Odom, Tom Chambers and Andrei Kirilenko for his style of play. According to ESPN's latest scouting report, Flagg is also predicted to make an "immediate impact" on the Mavericks when they officially make him the top overall pick in Wednesday's draft. Furthermore, it's not only the experts who are high on Flagg. Even Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James has major praise for the youngster as he heads to the NBA. Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James and top NBA prospect Cooper A. Vasquez and Robert Deutsch-Imagn Images In the latest episode of his "Mind the Game" podcast with Steve Nash, James talked about what makes Flagg a great NBA prospect. Advertisement "I personally think that he wants to be great, you know," James said of Flagg, who put up 19.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, 4.2 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.4 blocks per game in his lone season at Duke. "He had a hell of a year at Duke. A guy that can do so many different things out on the floor, can play with the ball, can play without the ball. You know, his jump shot is going to continue to get better. Super athletic, quick second jump." LeBron James also pointed out that Cooper Flagg will benefit from joining the Mavericks, especially since the team already has established stars like Kyrie Irving, Klay Thompson and Anthony Davis who can guide him. Not to mention that he's set to be coached by NBA legend Jason Kidd. Advertisement While there are naturally massive expectations on him — as James would know as a former No. 1 pick and undoubtedly the most-hyped prospect ever — the Lakers forward firmly believes Flagg has what it takes to succeed at the highest level of basketball.
