Michigan basketball schedules blockbuster Duke game in D.C. for February 2026

USA Today25-06-2025
Though Michigan football tends to draw the most attention, Dusty May and Michigan basketball are certainly working to wrest much of the offseason hullaballoo away.
Whether it's the addition of Yaxel Lendeborg, despite him appearing to be NBA draft-bound, or getting top-tier talent via high school recruiting, May has completely overhauled expectations in Ann Arbor in short order. And now, there will be another marquee matchup to go along with the rest of it.
The Wolverines were already set to face an ACC team, Wake Forest, with a game held at Little Caesars Arena in Detroit this season. But Michigan basketball announced on Tuesday morning that it has finalized a late-season nonconference game against Duke to be held in Washington D.C. on February 21.
The two storied programs are best known for meeting in the NCAA Tournament Championship Game back in the Fab Five era, but they last met 13 years ago in Durham.
Full release:
In conjunction with the Gazelle Group, the University of Michigan men's basketball team announced today (Tuesday, June 24) its inclusion in the Duel in The District against Duke on Saturday (Feb. 21) at Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.
Scheduled near the tail end of the Big Ten regular season, the Wolverines meet the Blue Devils for the first time in 13 years. The last meeting was during the 2013 ACC/Big Ten Challenge at Cameron Indoor Stadium in Durham. After falling behind by 10 at the half (32-22), U-M matched Duke in the second half (47-47) but was unable to overcome that first-half deficit, falling 79-69 (Dec. 4). Overall, U-M holds an 8-22 record against Duke.
The Duel in The District marks the seventh neutral-site game between Michigan and Duke. Three of the previous six have been during the NCAA Tournament, including the 1992 national championship, the 1964 Final Four and the 2011 second round, when U-M fell 73-71 as a late game-tying Darius Morris lay-up rattled off the rim. The last neutral game was in the 2011 Maui Invitational (Nov. 22) -- an 82-75 Duke win.
Michigan makes its way back to the nation's capital for the first time since participating in the Coaches vs. Racism match-up against Prairie View A&M (W, 77-49; Nov. 13, 2021). The Wolverines return to Capital One Arena for the first time since winning four games in four days to claim the 2017 Big Ten Tournament. That year, U-M went on its championship run after being involved in a team plane crash while leaving for the conference tournament.
The Maize and Blue are guided by Dusty May, who in his first season led the Wolverines to a 27-10 record, won the Big Ten Tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16 for a sixth straight NCAA Tournament. Duke is led by head coach Jon Scheyer, who closed his third season with the Blue Devils posting a 35-4 record, winning the ACC (19-1) regular season and tournament titles before falling to Houston, 70-67, in the Final Four.
All ticketing information, television details and tip time will be announced later. However, for early access to tickets before the public sale, sign up for email updates here.
Whoever wins the game will certainly have a big advantage when it comes to NCAA Tournament seeding.

Texas A&M will host elite 2026 4-star SF in early September

With new head basketball coach Bucky McMillan now at the helm, Texas A&M's recruiting efforts have increased significantly this summer concerning the 2026 cycle. So far, four-star small forward Bryson Howard and four-star shooting guard Dakari Spear are two players to watch, as Howard will visit College Station at the end of the month, while Spear placed the Aggies in his top 5 program list. On Sunday, it was revealed that another elite 2026 prospect, four-star small forward Ralph Scott out of the prestigious IMG Academy, will reportedly visit Texas A&M in an official capacity on September 5, followed by OVs to Tennessee and LSU. While the Aggies have yet to land a 2026 prospect, McMillan's success in landing 13 players from the transfer portal, which now includes former Southern Illinois star guard Ali Dibba, is built around relationships, similar to Texas A&M football head coach Mike Elko's recruiting efforts. On the court, Scott possesses an inside and outside game with the size and length to rebound at a high level, but, most importantly, he is an elite athlete who will likely lead a team in scoring at the next level. Scott will also take an official visit to Houston at the end of the month, which is likely Texas A&M's biggest competition outside to Tennessee. According to 247Sports, Scott is currently positioned as the 44th-ranked prospect in the class, the 18th-ranked small forward, and the 8th-ranked prospect in Florida. Texas A&M is a finalist to land 2026 4-star shooting guard

New Texas A&M head basketball coach Bucky McMillan is looking to land at least three to four prospects in the 2026 recruiting class, which now includes four-star shooting guard Dakari Spear out of The Colony, Texas, who recently placed the Aggies in his top 5 program list, joining Virginia Tech, Vanderbilt, Texas Tech, and Syracuse. Entering his inaugural campaign, McMillan is focused on the season ahead, but is fully aware that building the program through recruiting is necessary, as opposed to simply relying on the transfer portal to replenish the roster year after year. However, even though former coach Buzz Williams is having recruiting success with Maryland ahead of his first season, the Aggies struggled to land young prospects during the majority of his six seasons. McMillan has all the makings to be the next star coach after rebuilding Samford, coupled with his prolific high school coaching career, which resulted in landing 13 players from the transfer portal, including former Southern Illinois star guard Ali Dibba. Spear is an elite scorer who shot 55% from the field during his final season at The Colony HS, averaging 23 points per game and seven rebounds. This summer, Spear played with Drive Nation on the EYBL Circuit, where he averaged 13.6 points, 3.6 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game and shot 40.7% from the field. According to Rivals, Spear is the 67th-ranked prospect in the cycle, the 20th-ranked shooting guard, and the 7th-ranked prospect in Texas. Jim Harbaugh refuses to comment on NCAA penalizing University of Michigan for sign-stealing

Jim Harbaugh is refusing to comment on the NCAA's decision to fine the University of Michigan tens of millions of dollars and to suspend head coach Sherrone Moore for three games due to the sign-stealing scandal that occurred during Harbaugh's tenure at his alma mater. Harbaugh stayed mum on the Wolverines when he stepped to the podium at SoFi Stadium on Saturday night following his Los Angeles Chargers' 23-22 preseason loss to the Los Angeles Rams for his first interaction with the media since the NCAA's rulings were announced Friday. "Like I said to you last year, not engaging," Harbaugh said. "Not engaging." The NCAA sharply criticized Harbaugh's stewardship over the winningest program in college football when it announced the sanctions, saying it had "overwhelming" evidence of a cover-up by the Michigan staff. Harbaugh has always claimed he didn't know about the sign-stealing and scouting operation run by Connor Stalions. Stalions was given an eight-year show-cause order, restricting him from all athletically related activities during the show-cause period. He was on Harbaugh's staff until he resigned amid the scandal in November 2023. In the Netflix documentary "Untold: Sign Stealer," Stalions said he did not break any NCAA rules. Michigan only avoided a multi-year postseason ban because the NCAA decided it wasn't fair to the Wolverines' current student-athletes to penalize them for the misdeeds during Harbaugh's tenure, which culminated in a national championship in January 2024. He jumped back to the NFL two weeks later with the Chargers, and the NCAA hit him in August 2024 with a four-year show-cause order for recruiting violations. Harbaugh now faces a 10-year show-cause order following the conclusion of the four-year order, which effectively serves as a 14-year ban from college football. Moore said in a statement on Friday after the NCAA's announcement that he's "glad that this part of the process has been completed. I greatly respect the rules governing collegiate athletics and it is my intent to have our program comply with those rules at all times." Michigan has said it will appeal the NCAA's decision, claiming the body has made errors in interpreting its own bylaws while drawing conclusions that are contrary to evidence. Moore was Harbaugh's assistant for six years before getting the top job upon Harbaugh's departure. Moore will be suspended for two games this September and for the Wolverines' 2026 season opener in Germany. Note: The above video first aired on Aug. 15, 2025.
