Manhunt continues for third suspect in Olorato Mongale murder case
Police are still searching for Bongani Mthimkhulu, the remaining suspect implicated in the murder of 30-year-old student Olorato Mongale.
Last week, Mthimkhulu was identified as the third suspect in the case along with Philangenkosi Makhanya and Fezile Ngubane. Makhanya was killed during an altercation with police in KZN on Friday, while Ngubane was cleared by police at the weekend.
Speaking to Sowetan, national police spokesperson Brig Athlenda Mathe said Mthimkhulu had not yet been found.
'The police are still searching,' she said.
Last week Mathe revealed that Makhanya and Mthimkhulu had been arrested for kidnapping and robbery in Brakpan in April, but were released on bail.
' On April 20 this year, we arrested them [Makhanya and Mthimkhulu] on a charge of kidnapping and robbery in the Brakpan area, where a vigilant police officer was conducting his regular patrols. He came across a suspicious-looking vehicle, a VW Polo and when he confronted the suspects, he found that they had just kidnapped a woman and robbed her.

Mpumalanga teenager charged with perjury after faking rape
A 16-year-old girl has been charged with perjury after her claim about being raped proved to be fabricated. During the police investigation it was established no rape had occurred. 'The girl eventually confessed she had visited a male friend and, fearing her parents' reaction, chose to lie about being raped,' said Mpumalanga police spokesperson Lt-Col Jabu Ndubane. In her original report, the teenager alleged she was hitchhiking from Dullstroom (Emnothweni) to Lydenburg (Mashishing) when a black VW Polo with two male occupants speaking English offered her a lift. She claimed after passing Coromandel, the driver diverted into a secluded area, where she was rendered unconscious by a cloth with a chemical smell. On regaining consciousness, she claimed the passenger was raping her. He offered her money, which she refused. 'The claims have since been proven false by the investigating officers.'

Mpumalanga teen girl charged for lying about rape ordeal
The girl fabricated the story to conceal her visit to a male friend. On Wednesday, Mpumalanga police were sent on a manhunt for two men who were driving a black VW Polo from Dullstroom to Lydenburg on Sunday on allegations of rape. However, this turned out to be a smokescreen. According to Brigadier Donald Mdhluli, a 16-year-old girl reported to police that she was hitchhiking on Sunday and got raped after being given a lift by strangers. 'According to the report, the female victim was from Dullstroom, heading to Lydenburg, when a black VW Polo with two male occupants stopped and offered her a lift. She then accepted the offer,' said Mdhluli on Wednesday. The passenger allegedly covered her mouth with a cloth emitting a chemical smell, causing her to lose consciousness. Upon regaining consciousness, she realised the passenger was busy raping her.' A case docket was opened and assigned to the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for investigation. At the time, acting police provincial commissioner in Mpumalanga, Major General Zeph Mkhwanazi, promised the public that the members assigned to investigate would hunt down the suspects until they were brought to justice. 'She lied' However, there was no rape case to investigate and consequently, no suspects to arrest because this was a fabricated story. Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane said on Friday that the 16-year-old girl had been charged with perjury after investigations revealed that she fabricated the entire story. However, during the course of their investigation, it was established that no rape had occurred. Mkhwanazi expressed deep disappointment at the false report and issued a stern warning to the public about the seriousness of making false statements to the police. 'We will not show mercy to individuals who open false cases. The crime statistics for the last quarter of 2024/2025 indicate an increase in sexual offences. It is therefore extremely concerning and disheartening when people abuse the system by reporting fake cases. These actions waste police resources and undermine our efforts to fight gender-based violence, which we treat as a top priority. Mpumalanga rape stats Police Minister Senzo Mchunu recently released the fourth-quarter crime statistics and revealed that three Mpumalanga police stations were among the top 30 stations with reported cases. These are Masoyi, Calcutta, and Kabokweni police stations, all located in the Ehlanzeni district, which have recorded an increase in their cases. Most incidents occurred in the residences of either the perpetrator or the victim, with 362 cases recorded, followed by public places, with 161 cases. Image: Thuli Dlamini / eThekwini Municipality Pressure is mounting on eThekwini Municipality mayor Cyril Xaba to act against the City Manager Musa Mbhele following the Constitutional Court's dismissal of the City's appeal to overturn a lower order, which ruled that it must pay a service provider R30 million for the work the company had done. On Wednesday, the Constitutional Court dismissed the City's leave to appeal the Supreme Court of Appeal's decision after that court in February also upheld the earlier Durban High Court's ruling that the City must pay the service provider. The City is also expected to fork out more than R20 million in interest as the debt has accumulated interest since the high court ruling in 2022. The City also incurred legal fees as the appeal was dismissed with costs - now the case has drawn the attention of a former deputy city manager who was charged with misconduct after the city incurred legal costs in a separate matter. On Thursday, Sibusiso Makhanya instructed his law firm, Macgregor Erasmus Attorneys INC to write a letter of demand to the mayor to table the letter to the council within seven days. Makhanya, then the deputy city manager for trading services had been charged for misconduct for causing the City to incur R6 million in interest after it was taken to court by a service provider had not been paid R63.5 million. The City blamed Makhanya for failing to respond to emails from the Chief Financial Officer as there were allegations that the service provider had overcharged the City. The City argued that had Makhanya cooperated, the municipality would have avoided the R6 million in interest. Makhanya eventually left his job. Through his lawyers, Makhanya is now demanding that City management need to be consistent and hold Mbhele accountable for the cost the City will incur as a result of this week's Constitutional Court ruling. 'We brought to your attention then, as we do now, that one of the issues our client raised at his disciplinary hearing was the inconsistent application of the disciplinary code vis a vie himself and Mbhele. Mbhele was the person responsible for eThekwini having the default judgment granted against it and therefore incurring wasteful expenditure. "No further indulgences or communications will be forthcoming from our client and should you fail to act as you are obliged to, then we hold instructions to approach an appropriate forum for the necessary relief,' concludes the letter. Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi has joined calls for the mayor to act against officials responsible for the costs. In a statement the MEC called on the City to recover the money from officials that were responsible for the loss. In a short response, the City's spokesperson Gugu Sisilana said the municipality has accepted the court order, however, the mayor is yet to respond to the calls for action against for those responsible.
