A 5.7-magnitude earthquake hit near the Indonesian island of Sumatra on Friday, the United States Geological Survey said, damaging more than 100 houses with no reports of casualties.
The tremor hit at 02:52 am local time (1952 GMT Thursday) at a depth of 68 kilometres, with the epicentre offshore near Bengkulu province, according to the USGS.
The country's meteorological agency gave a higher magnitude of 6.0 with the epicentre at a depth of 84 kilometres, adding that there was no potential for a tsunami.
The tremor damaged more than 100 houses and at least six public facilities in the provincial capital of Bengkulu city, Abdul Muhari, a spokesman for the national disaster mitigation agency, or BNPB, said in a press conference on Friday.
'In Bengkulu city, 140 houses were affected (by the quake), eight of which collapsed, meaning (they) cannot be repaired,' Abdul said.
In the Central Bengkulu district, two houses were lightly damaged due to the quake, he added.
Abdul said no casualties from the quake were reported as of Friday morning.
Some locals in Bengkulu were woken up by the jolt and immediately rushed outside.
'During the quake... (my) house's window shook strongly. That was what woke us up,' Erick Catur Nugroho, 36, told AFP.
'We spontaneously (carried) the children outside the house. When outside, all the neighbours that I saw were not in their house, (they were) in front of the doors.'
The vast archipelago nation experiences frequent earthquakes due to its position on the Pacific 'Ring of Fire,' an arc of intense seismic activity where tectonic plates collide that stretches from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.
A magnitude-6.2 quake that shook Sulawesi in January 2021 killed more than 100 people and left thousands homeless.
In 2018, a magnitude-7.5 quake and subsequent tsunami in Palu on Sulawesi killed more than 2,200 people.
And in 2004, a magnitude-9.1 quake struck Aceh province causing a tsunami.
The undersea megathrust earthquake, known by the scientific community as the Sumatra–Andaman earthquake, was caused by a rupture along the fault between the Burma plate and the Indian plate, and reached a Mercalli intensity of IX in some areas.

At least 6 killed in stampede at India cricket celebrations
At least six people died on Wednesday in a crowd surge outside a cricket stadium in the Indian city of Bengaluru where fans were celebrating Royal Challengers Bengaluru's first Indian Premier League title win, authorities said. Local media put the death toll higher at between seven and 11, with about 50 injured. "It is deeply painful and shocking that people who were supposed to witness RCB's IPL victory celebrations have died in the tragedy," the local Karnataka state's Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar posted on X. Thousands of people, some waving the home team's red flag, lined streets around the Chinnaswamy Stadium as the team arrived in a bus in the evening, TV channels showed, with some climbing trees and the stadium wall for a better view. As the celebration proceeded inside, there was a melee outside among a cramped crowd, with some people climbing over others to move ahead, images from the scene showed. The deaths and injuries happened at gates where people without passes were denied entry and tried to push in, police said, and in the area between the perimeter and main arena. One policeman carried an injured spectator to an ambulance, while people gathered around another lying seemingly unconscious on the ground. Visuals also showed some men on the floor being given CPR while police caned young men to disperse them. A senior official from the government-run Bowring Hospital, where some victims were taken, told Reuters six people had died. UNCONTROLLABLE CROWD Naseer Ahmed, political secretary for the Karnataka chief minister, told broadcaster NDTV that the crowd had become uncontrollable and authorities were unable to make proper arrangements. The team had given away free passes for the event through its website but also warned that numbers would be limited. Bengaluru metro stopped services near the stadium, where the ceremony continued despite the turmoil outside. Bengaluru were celebrating beating Punjab Kings in the T20 tournament's final match in the 18th edition of the IPL.

Discovery of wartime bombs prompts large-scale evacuation in Cologne
Thousands of people were evacuated from central Cologne in western Germany on Wednesday following the discovery of three wartime bombs, in what the city authority called the largest such operation since the end of World War II. An evacuation zone with a radius of 1,000 metres was cleared from 8:00 am (0600 GMT), impacting around 20,500 residents along with many workers and hotel guests in the city's old town and Deutz district. Three American bombs, each with impact fuses, were found during construction work on Monday in Deutz, a bustling area on the bank of the River Rhine. Bomb disposal experts plan to disarm the ordnance later on Wednesday. Unexploded bombs are often found in Germany, where many major cities sustained heavy damage during the war. The evacuation area includes one hospital, two retirement homes, nine schools, and many hotels and museums. "Everyone involved hopes that the defusing can be completed in the course of Wednesday. This is only possible if all those affected leave their homes or workplaces early and stay outside the evacuation area from the outset on that day," the city authority said in a statement. The measures caused major transport disruptions in the city of over a million people, with Germany's national rail operator warning that many trains would be diverted or cancelled. A stretch of the Rhine will be blocked off before the bomb disposal operation begins. The Rhine, which runs from the Swiss Alps to the North Sea via Cologne, is one of Europe's key waterways for the transportation of commodities such as grain and coal. Private television station RTL, whose main office is located in the evacuation zone, interrupted its morning news programme.
