UFC champion pays visit to famous Perth BBQ joint

Perth Now06-06-2025
Current UFC welterweight champion Jack Della Maddalena has lent a hand to one of the hottest venues in Perth.
The Perth born fighter popped in to Big Don's Smoked Meats on Friday to help the eatery before their anticipated service day — helping out with a slab of wagyu brisket
Ranked ninth on the UFC men's pound-for-pound list, the reigning champ has been spending some time back in his home city since winning the title over Belal Muhammad in UFC 315 in Canada.
On their social media, Big Don's revealed that Della Maddalena has been a long time fan of the establishment, showing that he waited in the long line back in 2020.
The popular BBQ restaurant is known for its unique ordering style and only being open one day a week.
Customers must place their order for a rotating tray on Tuesday — which sells out in minutes — and can collect it on Saturday, with a huge line typically forming outside the Bayswater joint.
The menu changes every week with a BBQ meat pack that ranges with brisket, sausages, pork, ribs and more with additional add-on's available to order. The restaurant has hosted a number of named icons recently, with Chef and Youtuber Andy Cooks stopping by for a service day and filmed a video — calling the Perth joint 'The World's Best BBQ'.
It's not the first time the BBQ joint has made headlines this week following the owners — Donovan MacDonald — outspoken battle with the Bayswater council.

Margaret River pop-up that served Andy Hearnden ‘one of most interesting meals of his life' tours Australia

When I suggested Andy Hearnden check out Dahl Daddy's while he was in Margaret River for the inaugural Pair'd festival, I expected the popular chef would enjoy himself. (Then again, who wouldn't fall headfirst for a spirited curry canteen – operating out of the local skate park, no less – specialising in heavy-hitting Burmese flavours including, as its name suggests, a deeply nourishing dahl?) What I wasn't expecting, however, was how into Dahl Daddy's he would be – and that there would soon be a reunion. 'In November last year, I had one of the most interesting meals of my life,' said Hearnden on Instagram after he and fellow New Zealand-born chef Ben Shewry visited Dahl Daddy's and ate various dishes including lahpet thoke: a Burmese fermented tea leaf salad Hearnden hailed as 'absolutely delicious'. 'For the first time in ages, I tasted bold, beautiful flavours that I'd never had before,' says Hearnden. 'My mind was blown.' Sadly, leasing issues forced Dahl Daddy's owners Corey Rozario and Imogin Mitchell to close their popular community eatery in June: devastating news for Hearnden as well as anyone else with an appreciation for bold South Asian cooking. The silver lining to this especially gloomy cloud, though, is that losing their permanent home has allowed Rozario and Mitchell to hit the road and introduce the rest of Australia to Dahl Daddy's singular, free-spirited take on Burmese and South Asian cuisine. Until mid-October, Dahl Daddy's caravan of curry will wind its way around Australia and stop in Melbourne, Canberra, Sydney, the Sunshine Coast and Adelaide before ending the tour in Perth at Big Don's Smoked Meats. Throughout the tour, Rozario and Mitchell will set up shop in everything from a pizza-slinging record shop in Melbourne's inner-east (Sunday, August 16) to an Adelaide burger joint (Thursday, September 25). Each city's event will be unique, with formats ranging from set-menu dinners to takeaway nights. One of the tour's key moments takes place in Sydney on Sunday, August 31. A joint effort with the team behind Kyiv Social – a socially minded eatery affiliated with the Plate It Forward movement and winner of the innovation prize at the Sydney Morning Herald Good Food Guide awards in 2023 – this event is a fundraiser for earthquake relief efforts in Burma as well as a reunion between team Dahl Daddy's and Hearnden. 'The morning after I posted my video cooking a Burmese-style prawn curry, I woke to news that a massive earthquake had hit the region [Burma],' says Hearnden. 'I couldn't shake the feeling that I had to do something. A week later, almost like serendipity, Corey called and asked if I wanted to be part of this new project. I said yes straight away. I can't wait to get in the kitchen with him, share this incredible food, and hopefully do some good along the way.'

UFC fighter Angela Hill mortified as intimate item dropped before Vegas 109

Don't miss out on the headlines from UFC. Followed categories will be added to My News. UFC star Angela Hill was left with her head in her hands after an intimate object was tossed away by an official before her weigh-in at UFC Vegas 109. The 40-year-old was clearly concerned about making weight for her strawweight fight with Iasmin Lucindo and removed her bra inserts before stepping onto the scales. UFC 319: Du Plessis vs Chimaev | SUN 17 AUG 12PM AEST | UFC Middleweight champion Dricus Du Plessis puts his title on the line against undefeated Khamzat Chimaev. | Order Now with Main Event on Kayo Sports. Already slightly embarrassed at removing her comfort pads in front of the cameras, Hill was left mortified when she handed them over to an official, who then inadvertently tossed one of the pads several metres away. The official clearly didn't know what to do when he was handed the inserts, and his attempt to place them on a microphone stand resulted in one of them falling onto the ground. While trying to make up for his mistake, one of the inserts was sent flying across the stage at the UFC Apex. Angela Hill was mortified. Photo: X and UFC Espanol. She regained her composure after tipping the scales at 116 pounds and showed off by striking a pose before walking off the stage. As reported by The Sun, her honest reaction earned her plenty of plaudits online, with one fan writing: 'She was dope for doing that, scored points with me on personality.' Another added: 'She handled that with as much class as could be possible in that situation. I am now a big fan.' She didn't lose any fans with her performance inside the Octagon on Sunday, but she was clearly outgunned by Lucindo with the judges handing the Brazilian the win via a unanimous decision (30-27, 30-27, 29-28). The loss means that Hill now has an 18-15-0 record - setting a new record for the most losses ever recorded by a woman in the UFC. It slipped though the fingers. Photo: X and @mmamania. American Hall had her head in her hands a second time in a matter of days after the result was announced. 28 of her 33 career fights were in the UFC. Her record in the premier fight promotion stands at 18 losses and 10 wins. Hill, who was ranked 12th in the UFC women's strawweight rankings coming into Vegas 109, is one of the longest-tenured fighters on the roster, first competing in the UFC's 'Ultimate Fighter' series in 2014. The veteran was coming in off a win over Ketlen Souza in February, but her career now stands at a crossroads. There were fireworks on the same UFC Vegas 109 card as Toshiomi Kazama was knocked out cold by a sickening 'power bomb'. Bantamweight Elijah Smith pulled off the KO win after lifting his opponent into the air and dropping him on his head before finishing the contest with two heavy punches while Kazama was already clearly unconscious. In a blockbuster card, Anthony Hernandez also called for a title fight after choking out Roman Dolidze in the main event. Aussie Steve Erceg also recorded a dominant win via a unanimous judges' decision in his fight against Ode Osbourne. Originally published as UFC star mortified as intimate item dropped on stage
