Attempted murder at funeral: Man shot multiple times in Limpopo
A 30-year-old man was arrested at a funeral at Ga-Molepo, Laastehoop, in the Mankweng policing precinct in Limpopo, for attempted murder after he allegedly shot another man.

A 30-year-old man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder following a shooting incident that occurred during a funeral gathering at Ga-Molepo, Laastehoop, in the Mankweng policing precinct in Limpopo.
Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said the incident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning.
'Police received information regarding the shooting incident and responded immediately to the scene. Upon arrival, officers discovered that the male victim had already been transported to a local hospital for medical treatment after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds,' said Mashaba.

Mashaba said the firearm used in the shooting was also recovered.

The 30-year-old male suspect was arrested at the scene and charged with attempted murder.
Police said the motive for the shooting incident remains unknown at this stage, and investigations are ongoing.
Meanwhile, provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, expressed concerns over the incident and condemned the use of firearms to resolve disputes, particularly during community gatherings meant for mourning and remembrance.
"We cannot tolerate such senseless acts of violence, especially during times when families and communities come together to pay their last respects to the deceased,' said Hadebe.
'We call on community members to find peaceful ways to resolve their differences.'
The arrested suspect is expected to appear before the Mankweng Magistrate's Court on Monday.
In 2022, IOL reported that two young people were killed at Mjindini Trust in Barberton, in Mpumalanga after a fight broke out between alleged gang rivals in the cemetery.
At the time, Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the two young men died when the fight broke out while a group of people were on their way to dig a grave in preparation for a funeral.
'According to the information received by the police, about 20 people were heading towards the grave site to dig a grave, as part of the preparation for the funeral which was scheduled to take place today (Saturday) after a bereaved family lost their loved one,' Mohlala said.
'It is said that before they could reach the grave site, a scuffle broke out where shots were fired. Some of those who were present are said to have run for cover,' he said.
However, when the dust finally settled, two young men were 'sadly down'.

US travel advisory reveals 'bigger issues at play' in diplomatic ties

Image: AFP The United States government has revised its travel advisory to South Africa after President Cyril Ramaphosa met with Donald Trump at the White House, raising concerns that these may be further attempts to paint the country as a no-go zone. This latest level 2 travel advisory warning its citizens to be cautious when visiting the country, issued on May 27, comes hot on the heels of Ramaphosa's recent visit to Washington where he and his delegation pleaded with Trump to reconsider some of his recent views about a white genocide in South Africa. The advisory urges American citizens to exercise increased caution in South Africa due to crime, terrorism, civil unrest, and kidnapping. 'Violent crime is common and includes robbery, rape, carjacking and mugging. There are also "smash-and-grab" attacks on vehicles. Violent crime is more common in the downtown areas of big cities, especially after dark. "Kidnapping is a threat in South Africa. Kidnappers target US citizens and other foreign travelers to steal money. Captors often force victims to withdraw cash or give online account passwords before they are let go. International relations expert Dr Noluthando Phungula said the US was trying to vilify South Africa as part of a bigger issue. The latest advisory comes more than a year after the US State Department issued another updated Level 2 travel advisory to South Africa in February 2024 in which it warned its citizens to exercise increased caution in the country due to crime and civil unrest. Responding to the alert, Minister of Tourism, Patricia De Lille indicated that context is important as South Africa remains one of the most safe and stable countries in the world. "We respect the sovereign right of all nations to provide guidance to their citizens travelling abroad. We also acknowledge the recent meeting between Presidents Ramaphosa and Trump and the subsequent media coverage that has followed. However, it is important to offer broader context and reaffirm our unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety, comfort, and enjoyment of all visitors to our country. Furthermore, the advisory states that there is risk of terrorist violence, including terrorist attacks and other activity, in South Africa. "Due to the risks, U.S. government employees working in South Africa must obtain special authorisation to travel to many informal settlements (townships) in and around Cape Town. U.S. mission staff must use fully armoured vehicles when visiting and visiting hours are limited to 10am to 3pm," it states.

Two ex-councillors from Walter Sisulu Municipality have been sentenced for defrauding a woman of R150,000 in a fake RDP housing scam. Both have been ordered to repay R80,000 by August 2025. Image: Nokuthula Mbatha/Independent Newspapers Two former councillors of the Walter Sisulu Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape have been found guilty of defrauding a woman of over R150,000 in a bogus Reconstruction and Development Programme (RDP) housing deal. Mokhoabane Spetla Moahlodi, 63, and Mxolisi Mdumisa,44, were arrested in 2018 by the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks). The two had promised the victim an RDP house in April 2017 in exchange for payment, which she duly deposited into their account. However, the promised house was never delivered. After several court appearances, the pair were sentenced to five years' imprisonment, wholly suspended for five years on the condition that they repay R80,000.
