‘Arrested girls lied about their ages': Police say suspects with stolen Toyota Hilux are minors

Police in Limpopo arrested two teenage girls for possession of a stolen Toyota Hilux GD-6 in Limpopo, while a third occupant of the vehicle escaped on foot. Image: File/SAPS Police in Limpopo have established that two suspects who were arrested and charged for possession of a stolen Toyota Hilux bakkie are minors, who must be charged under the Child Justice Act. On Tuesday, IOL reported that provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said the two young women who are in police custody were aged 19 and 20. However, on Wednesday night, Mashaba told IOL that after the story was published, parents of the arrested came forward with birth certificates proving that the two are girls aged 15 and 16. 'On the two ladies, further investigation has revealed that they gave incorrect ages during the arrest. After their families saw their pictures on a released media statement, they came forward and the birth certificates show they are minors aged 15 and 16,' said Mashaba. 'They were supposed to be charged under the Child Justice Act. They will now be placed in a place of safety, while they remain in police custody.' Mashaba said the date for the girls to return to court will be announced in due course. 'I'm still waiting for the remand date,' he said. On Monday, IOL reported that the Polokwane Magistrate's Court has remanded 43-year-old Zimbabwean national Mhlalisi Moyo in custody after he was arrested in Limpopo for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle. Image: File A 30-year-old man has been arrested and charged with attempted murder following a shooting incident that occurred during a funeral gathering at Ga-Molepo, Laastehoop, in the Mankweng policing precinct in Limpopo. Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said the incident happened in the early hours of Saturday morning. 'Police received information regarding the shooting incident and responded immediately to the scene. Upon arrival, officers discovered that the male victim had already been transported to a local hospital for medical treatment after sustaining multiple gunshot wounds,' said Mashaba. Police said the motive for the shooting incident remains unknown at this stage, and investigations are ongoing. Meanwhile, provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, expressed concerns over the incident and condemned the use of firearms to resolve disputes, particularly during community gatherings meant for mourning and remembrance. "We cannot tolerate such senseless acts of violence, especially during times when families and communities come together to pay their last respects to the deceased,' said Hadebe. 'We call on community members to find peaceful ways to resolve their differences.' The arrested suspect is expected to appear before the Mankweng Magistrate's Court on Monday. In 2022, IOL reported that two young people were killed at Mjindini Trust in Barberton, in Mpumalanga after a fight broke out between alleged gang rivals in the cemetery. At the time, Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Brigadier Selvy Mohlala said the two young men died when the fight broke out while a group of people were on their way to dig a grave in preparation for a funeral. 'According to the information received by the police, about 20 people were heading towards the grave site to dig a grave, as part of the preparation for the funeral which was scheduled to take place today (Saturday) after a bereaved family lost their loved one,' Mohlala said. 'It is said that before they could reach the grave site, a scuffle broke out where shots were fired. Some of those who were present are said to have run for cover,' he said. Tshabangu is facing charges of possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle, as well as reckless and negligent driving after he allegedly tried to flee from police. The 34-year-old South African national was arrested at Mokopane on Sunday night, and police believe he was travelling to Zimbabwe with the stolen vehicle. After the court appearance, the case was postponed to Monday next week and Mlambo was remanded in custody. In the latest operations, Mashaba said members of the Musina Task Team have successfully intercepted a Toyota Corolla Cross on Wednesday evening. The vehicle was intercepted at Bergview during routine operations, but the man who was driving the stolen vehicle managed to run and evade arrest. 'The vehicle had been reported stolen in Brakpan, Gauteng province in January 2025. When officers attempted to stop the vehicle, the driver accelerated,' said Mashaba. 'After a brief pursuit, the suspect abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot into nearby bushes. The suspect evaded arrest.' Mashaba said a manhunt has been launched to locate and arrest the wanted suspect.

Prominent Limpopo DJ behind bars for sexually assaulting his six-year-old relative

Police said a DJ at a radio station based in Thohoyandou, was apprehended on Monday, for sexually assaulting his six-year-old relative. Image: File A 34-year-old "prominent" radio personality from the Vhembe District, Limpopo, has been arrested on charges of sexually assaulting a six-year-old relative. Provincial police spokesperson, Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said the incident happened at the little girl's residence, in Mpheni. 'The suspect, who works as a DJ at a radio station based in Thohoyandou, was apprehended on Monday, 19 May 2025, following a thorough investigation by Waterval SAPS detectives,' said Mashaba. The accused man made his initial appearance before the Waterval Magistrate's Court on Tuesday, where proceedings were postponed to 27 May for formal bail application. 'Police reports indicate that the incident allegedly occurred on 12 May 2025 at approximately 3.30 pm. The girl's mother, who was in Pretoria at the time, was notified by the child's grandmother that the minor was unwell,' said Mashaba. 'Upon returning home immediately, she learned that the child had already been taken to hospital, where medical examination confirmed sexual assault. During subsequent interviews, the child disclosed that the suspect had shown her inappropriate material before committing the alleged assault.' Meanwhile, provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has expressed serious concerns regarding the incident. "It is deeply disturbing when those who should be protecting our children become the very perpetrators who harm them. The suspect's position as a public figure and family member makes this case particularly troubling, as it represents a profound betrayal of trust," said Hadebe. "I want to assure the community that the SAPS takes crimes against children extremely seriously, regardless of who the suspect is.'
