Stolen Pretoria vehicle recovered in Limpopo before crossing border

The Citizen3 days ago
A luxury SUV valued at over R2.5-million, which was stolen in Brooklyn, was recently retrieved, travelling towards the Beitbridge border.
An anti-smuggling operation conducted by the Limpopo provincial police saw officers recovering the SUV along the N1 highway near Polokwane on July 2.
It was a collaborative effort comprising different stakeholders, including the Limpopo SAPS, Shadow Secure Security, Tshimollo Security and Investigations, and Tracker Connect.
According to Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba, police acted on intelligence regarding a stolen vehicle travelling from Gauteng towards the Beitbridge border.
He said the recovered vehicle matched the description of a vehicle stolen in Pretoria.
'The vehicle matching the description, a white Nissan Patrol V8 5.6, was identified and intercepted near Shell Ultra City within the Westernburg policing area. Further investigation confirmed the vehicle had been stolen in Brooklyn, Pretoria,' Mashaba said.
He said the police acted swiftly and arrested the suspect driving the vehicle.
'A 51-year-old Zimbabwean who was behind the wheel was arrested on the spot and charged with possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle.'
Mashaba said the suspect appeared before the Polokwane Magistrate's Court on July 4.
Provincial commissioner of police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, praised the swift recovery of the vehicle and hailed the collaboration that made it possible.

No leads in two missing cases in Mamelodi

No leads in two missing cases in Mamelodi The search for two missing people from Mamelodi continues, as police have had no leads in either case. Phillemon Duke Mahlangu (63) from Mamelodi East went missing in January, and Thabo Paulos Phasha (37) from Skierlik informal settlement went missing in June. The two cases are unrelated. According to police spokesperson Constable Penelope Khulong, Mahlangu was last seen on January 14, wearing a brown hat and brown jacket. Khulong said Mahlangu's son reported him missing, saying he was with his father in the Pretoria CBD on the day he went missing, as they had not seen each other in a long time. 'After picking him up, they travelled to Mamelodi East and spent the day together. When they parted ways, the victim requested the complainant to drop him off at Tshwane College. That was the last time he saw him,' said Khulong. She added that she is pleading with the public to help find him, as his son has made attempts to look for him, but no trace has yet been found. Thabo Paulos Phasha (37) from Skierlik informal settlement was last seen in Mamelodi East on June 3. His mother reported him missing after receiving a call from her neighbour on June 7, indicating that Phasha had not been seen in three days. Police are requesting anyone with information to contact Mamelodi East police on 012 815 7000, Crime Stop on 08600 10111, or submit information through the MySAPS App. Do you have more information about the story? Fourth suspect in R7m transformer theft awaits bail hearing, case postponed

The case of the three Tshwane officials accused in the brazen theft of a transformer worth R7-million has been postponed to July 11. This comes after a fourth accused, Katlego Molepo (32), handed himself over to the Atteridgeville police station on July 6, according to the NPA. National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana said the case was postponed for Molepo's bail hearing, which the state opposes. 'The case was postponed to July 11 for the Schedule 6 opposed bail application of the fourth accused,' she said. She said Molepo is the alleged buyer of the transformer and would be facing the same charge as the three officials accused of stealing a transformer valued at R7-million. 'All three are facing a charge of theft of essential infrastructure, relating to a transformer stolen from the Claudius Substation in Laudium.' Mahanjana said on July 8, the Atteridgeville Magistrate's Court granted the three Tshwane officials bail. 'Kleinbooy Mahlangu (45) from Soshanguve was granted bail of R35 000, while Thomas Baloi (41) from Pretoria North and Daniel Kubayi (50) from Hammanskraal were each granted bail of R30 000.' The three were arrested on July 1 after the Gauteng Organised Crime unit conducted almost a year-long thorough investigation of the theft of the transformer. She said the TMPD and SAPS allegedly responded to a tip-off about a theft in progress at the Claudius Substation on November 7, 2024. 'Upon arrival, they found cranes, trucks, and a City of Tshwane-branded vehicle on-site. When no proof of work authorisation could be provided, 11 people were arrested,' she said. Mahanjana said 10 individuals were later released from custody. She said during investigations, it was found that Mahlangu, Baloi, and Kubayi had fled the scene before police arrived. 'Warrants of arrest were issued, and the three were arrested at their respective workplaces,' she said. Mahanjana added that the state did not oppose their release on bail. 'Prosecutor Grace Komane submitted an affidavit from Investigating Officer Sergeant Thabo Lukhele, stating that the accused had co-operated with the police, is permanently employed by the City of Tshwane, and therefore they do not pose a flight risk,' she said. She said the affidavit also noted that the investigation is nearly complete, with most witness statements already collected. LISTEN: Do you have more information about the story? Community patrollers tackle early morning crime in Mamelodi

The Mamelodi CPF encourages the public, especially those who are going to work in the early hours of the morning, to walk in groups to avoid becoming a crime victim. Eddie Mnguni from the CPF said that the community needs to take this message seriously so that they do not get robbed. 'Mamelodi is very dark, and we know criminals take advantage of darkness,' he said, adding that groups of five to 10 are best. 'Isolated areas are hotspots because criminals hide in the bush to attack anyone walking alone,' he said. He continued, 'There is police visibility, but the community must please use alternative routes.' Criminals look for patterns in behaviour and then exploit these to target you. According to Mnguni, there is a programme with over 200 volunteer patrollers that helps in fighting crime by patrolling identified hotspots in the Mamelodi area. 'The programme helps prevent people from getting mugged while on their way to work in the early hours of the morning, and prevents cable theft, housebreaking, vandalism of government buildings, etc,' continued Mnguni. These CPF members, known as 'Amabutho' or 'Siyabangena', are the ones conducting the winter safety patrols. 'But we have other groups working with them, including the volunteers.' 'The members patrol mostly identified hotspot areas around Mamelodi, and we are working hand in hand with the police,' he continued. He confirmed that the aim of patrolling the neighbourhood is to keep the community and property safe at all times. Mnguni encouraged residents in other areas of Mamelodi to start their own street committees and neighbourhood watches. He closed with, 'The youth need to get involved in these patrols and start walking their parents, sisters, and girlfriends to work in the morning and the evening.'
