Cross-border crime foiled: Stolen bakkie recovered near Botlokwa
The Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba said intelligence about bakkie stolen in Brooklyn in Pretoria was received in the early hours of this mornings and that it was being driven towards the Beitbridge Port of Entry for smuggling into Zimbabwe.
'An urgent anti-smuggling operation was activated by the Limpopo Tracking Team with support from Tracker SA, Mighty Anti-Hijacking Security, Willie K9 Security, ELit Security, Limpopo Anti-Hijacking Security, and Tshimollo Security and Investigation. The vehicle was spotted on the N1 near Botlokwa, where members swiftly intercepted it. Two South African men, aged 31 and 44, were arrested for possession of a suspected stolen motor vehicle,' Mashaba said.
He added that quick coordination prevented the vehicle from being smuggled across the border.
'The vehicle has been impounded for further investigation and the suspects will appear before the Sekgosese Magistrate's Court on Monday (August 18).'
The provincial police commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the teamwork, saying it showed the value of strong partnerships between SAPS and the private security sector in tackling cross-border vehicle crime.

Groenewald said that following a prison raid, they try to determine which officials were involved in smuggling contraband and disciplinary action is taken. 'Since I became the minister, 155 officials' services were ended with Correctional Services because they were part of contraband smuggling,' Groenewald said. Next Stay Close ✕ Groenewald said that in July, Correctional Services National Commissioner, Makgothi Thobakgale, conducted seven raids. 'We do identify the hotspots, and if you look at some annual statistics, more than 40,000 cellphones have been confiscated,' Groenewald said. He said that they are cleaning their facilities because the more contraband they can get rid of, the more proof they have that they are doing their job well. 'So we will continue with that, we will even increase the raids, and the people must understand that it is prohibited, and we will act accordingly,' Groenewald said. On overcrowding, Groenewald said they have admitted it is a huge problem. In Parliament, he has responded several times. They also account to the Portfolio Committee on Correctional Services in Parliament. 'Our main problem is actually when it comes to remand detainees. We have people in our facility who are awaiting trial for more than 10 years. There are six of them. Now that is part of the criminal justice system. There are ways, in terms of legislation, where we can request and go back to court, but it's not very successful,' Groenewald said. He also said they have about 3,000 remand detainees who could not afford the bail of R1,000 or less. 'There's a process trying to establish a bail fund where we can try to do that,' Groenewald said. Additionally, about 26,000 foreigners are in correctional facilities. Approximately 13,000 are remand detainees.

This forms part of its 120th anniversary, marking more than a century of academic excellence and profound contributions to the South African legal landscape. As a testament to this enduring legacy and its pivotal role in shaping the nation's jurisprudence, it will honour Justice Lex Mpati by naming the faculty after him. 'This occasion signifies a commitment to recognising visionary leaders and inspiring future generations who will uphold the rule of law across South Africa,' Judge Gerald Bloem, Council Chairperson of Rhodes University said. He added that Justice Mpati's life and career embody the core values our institution promotes, which includes integrity, excellence, and social justice. His lectures, mentorship, and guidance have inspired generations of law students, many of whom have served in various capacities in our legal system. He has consistently advocated for access to justice and legal education for all South Africans.

Triple fishing tragedy rocks Shelly Point
A tragic accident off the West Coast has claimed the lives of three local fishermen after their vessel capsized near Shelly Point on Friday afternoon. The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) confirmed the incident, saying their Mykonos and St Helena Bay stations were activated at 16:11 following eyewitness reports of a man clinging to a capsized fishing boat, with more people feared in the water. NSRI St Helena Bay launched their rescue craft Rotary Onwards , with assistance from the SA Police Services, West Coast Disaster Risk Management, EMS, Saldanha Bay Traffic Services, and West Coast Medical Rescue. Police diving units were also alerted. On arrival, responders found the body of an adult male washed ashore, who was sadly declared deceased at the scene by paramedics. A second body was discovered in shallow surf nearby and recovered by NSRI rescue swimmers in cooperation with police. The man was also declared deceased. A Good Samaritan, wearing a wetsuit, was found in the surf searching among the rocks for the third missing fisherman. An NSRI rescue swimmer joined the search, and together they located and recovered the man's body from the rocky shoreline. All three men were declared deceased and their bodies were handed over to police and the Government Health Forensic Pathology Services. The victims are all believed to be local adult fishermen. Their identities have not yet been released. 'The circumstances that led to the fishing boat capsizing and the time of the incident is not clear,' said Cedric Brown, NSRI Mykonos duty coxswain. 'Police have opened an inquest docket.' The NSRI, emergency services, and police have commended the eyewitness who raised the alarm, as well as the Good Samaritan who bravely entered the surf to assist.
