Triple fishing tragedy rocks Shelly Point
The National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) confirmed the incident, saying their Mykonos and St Helena Bay stations were activated at 16:11 following eyewitness reports of a man clinging to a capsized fishing boat, with more people feared in the water.
NSRI St Helena Bay launched their rescue craft Rotary Onwards , with assistance from the SA Police Services, West Coast Disaster Risk Management, EMS, Saldanha Bay Traffic Services, and West Coast Medical Rescue.
Police diving units were also alerted.
On arrival, responders found the body of an adult male washed ashore, who was sadly declared deceased at the scene by paramedics.
A second body was discovered in shallow surf nearby and recovered by NSRI rescue swimmers in cooperation with police.
The man was also declared deceased.
A Good Samaritan, wearing a wetsuit, was found in the surf searching among the rocks for the third missing fisherman.
An NSRI rescue swimmer joined the search, and together they located and recovered the man's body from the rocky shoreline.
All three men were declared deceased and their bodies were handed over to police and the Government Health Forensic Pathology Services.
The victims are all believed to be local adult fishermen. Their identities have not yet been released.
'The circumstances that led to the fishing boat capsizing and the time of the incident is not clear,' said Cedric Brown, NSRI Mykonos duty coxswain.
'Police have opened an inquest docket.'
The NSRI, emergency services, and police have commended the eyewitness who raised the alarm, as well as the Good Samaritan who bravely entered the surf to assist.

Another Nelson Mandela Bay prosecutor targeted in brazen shooting
Shots were fired at a prosecutor and his family outside their home in Tiryville, Kariega, in a brazen attack reminiscent of the killing of Tracy Brown last month. High-ranking police and government officials have voiced their distress after shots were fired at a prosecutor and his family in Nelson Mandela Bay in the early hours of Monday morning. While the prosecutor and his family escaped the harrowing event unscathed, the incident bore an alarming similarity to the shooting that claimed the life of Gqeberha prosecutor Tracy Brown last month. According to a police report, the prosecutor and his family arrived at their home in Tiryville, Kariega, at about 1.15am on Monday. While they were in the prosecutor's car outside the gate of their property, they were approached by four people. One of them pulled out a firearm and fired multiple shots at the car, and the group fled on foot. The police said the motive for the attack was yet to be determined and formed part of 'a critical line of investigation'. Detectives at the Kamesh police station are investigating a case of attempted murder. The identities of the prosecutor and his family are being withheld for their safety. On July 31, Regional Court prosecutor Tracy Brown was shot in the driveway of her home in Young Park, Gqeberha. She was in her car when four masked men approached, shot several rounds into her car, and fled in a VW Polo. Brown was rushed to hospital, where she died from her wounds. Her death, which was widely regarded as a targeted murder, rocked the Nelson Mandela Bay legal fraternity and put the safety of court officials under the spotlight. In April, another Eastern Cape prosecutor, Elona Sombulula, was shot and killed in Ngcobo. Police response 'The brazen attack on an officer of the court and his family is an attack on the very foundation of our justice system. We will not tolerate such acts of intimidation and violence. We are confident that we will apprehend those responsible,' said the acting Eastern Cape police commissioner, Major General Thandiswa Kupiso, after Monday's incident. A spokesperson for the National Prosecuting Authority, Luxolo Tyali, said they would not comment on the matter at this stage due to the sensitive nature of the incident. The Eastern Cape MEC for community safety, Xolile Nqatha, said, 'This is a matter of great concern which cannot be taken lightly. It cannot be allowed that criminals target our prosecutors so openly and repeatedly. Serious action must be taken.' At Brown's memorial service in Gqeberha two weeks ago, Nqatha said the investigation into her murder was bearing fruit, and arrests were imminent. No arrests have been made, but on Tuesday, Nqatha said suspects would be apprehended soon. The police have urged anyone with information about Monday's attempted murder to contact the investigating officer, Detective Warrant Officer Heinrich Swanepoel, on 071 475 2294. Ian Cameron, DA MPs injured in brutal ‘targeted' attack

The trio – which includes Lisa Schickerling and Nicholas Gotsell – were ambushed after visiting a nearby SAPS training academy. IAN CAMERON AND OTHER DA MPS INJURED IN CAPE TOWN SMASH AND GRAB On Tuesday, 19 August, Ian Cameron and fellow DA MPs Lisa Schickerling and Nicholas Gotsell escaped a smash-and-grab after conducting official duties. ADVERTISEMENT The trio were returning from a surprise inspection of the SAPS Philippi Training Academy when their vehicle was ambushed. A group of unknown suspects broke the window of their car with bricks and brutally assaulted Cameron and his colleagues. The quick-thinking Police Portfolio Committee Chairperson retaliated with his own firearm, firing shots at the suspects. A bloodied Cameron suffered broken teeth and required facial stitches. His colleagues sustained minor head and neck injuries. Ian Cameron believes that it was a targeted attack on himself. He posted on his X account: 'This was a serious and deliberate attack, and it underscores the risks faced during oversight work. But incidents like this will not deter us. We remain determined to carry out our responsibility to ensure accountability and safety. ADVERTISEMENT According to authorities, the motive for the attack is not yet known. 'OUT OF CONTROL CRIME' The DA condemned the attack, calling on police to increase their presence in high-crime areas. The party's Chief Whip, George Michalakis, told IOL: 'This incident is a portrayal of the out-of-control crime that South Africans face daily. No one is exempt from it. In 2003, Helen Zille narrowly escaped death when her Corsa was shot at in an attempted hijacking in Khayelitsha. At the time of the attack, Helen was driving home one evening after doing constituency work in the informal settlement.
