Duduzile Zuma wears 'terrorist' T-shirt to court over looting tweets
Duduzile Zuma – the daughter of MK Party founder Jacob Zuma – has branded herself a 'modern day terrorist' during her Durban High Court appearance over her July unrest tweets. The MP has been charged with incitement to commit terrorism and public violence. Her trial will begin on 10 November. In a bold move, Duduzile Zuma wore a T-shirt with the slogan 'modern day terrorist' to the Durban High Court over her controversial July 2021 tweets. The daughter of former president Jacob Zuma has been charged with incitement to commit terrorism and two counts of incitement to commit public violence. The trial is scheduled to take place from 10- 21 November. Posting pictures of herself in court on her Instagram account, a beaming Duduzile thanked her supporters. She posted: 'At the end of the day, I'm a good woman, no matter what people say. 'I'm not perfect by any means, but my heart is pure, and I love hard with everything I have.' Her court appearance comes days after she rallied her supporters to take action against anyone who threatened KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. In 2021, Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla was accused of encouraging the July unrest, where properties and stores around the country were looted, vandalised, and torched. During the period, over 70 people are reported to have died in violent confrontations. Duduzile Zuma Sambudla has made headlines over her questionable social media posts. Her July unrest tweets from 2021 have landed her in hot water. Images via TikTok: @duduzumasambudla The daughter of the former president retweeted several videos of the violence, which was a direct reaction to her father's incarceration on contempt-of-court charges shortly before. Life sentence for Northern Natal wife-murderer
A man was sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of his wife - and mother of their four children - after he accused her of cheating on him. The man strangled the woman to death during a quarrel when they were alone at the homestead. Image: AI /Ron Between January and March this year 966 women and 314 children were murdered in South Africa, according to recent statistics released by the SAPS, which was another grim reminder of GBV proliferation in the country. It was also staggering to note that in 2023/24 term, 24 942 women were murdered, included in that number was a 29-year-old woman from Jakkalspan, Newcastle, who was strangled to death by husband. The 41-year-old man, who confessed to the July 2024 murder, was sentenced to life behind bars, at the Madadeni Regional Court in Northern KwaZulu-Natal yesterday. The accused believed that his wife had cheated on him. National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson, Natasha Ramkisson-Kara, said the couple lived together as husband and wife since the accused had paid a portion of lobola to her family, and they had four children together. This is because he suspected her of cheating on him. The quarrel escalated, and the accused strangled her to death." Ramkisson-Kara said the man then went to his brother's homestead, and related to him what had transpired. He told his brother that he was going to hand himself over to the police. At the police station, he reported to the officer on duty what he had done. The police took him back to his homestead, where he showed them his wife's body. He was then arrested and charged with murder,' said Ramkisson-Kara. In court, prosecutor Zama Zikalala led the testimony of the accused's brother and the police official in question. 'The postmortem results were also handed in to the court. In aggravation of sentence, Zikalala told the court that the accused had a previous conviction for assaulting the deceased on a prior occasion. The accused was sentenced accordingly, and the court declared him unfit to possess a firearm. 'We remain committed to the fight against the scourge of gender-based violence and femicide,' said Ramkisson-Kara. Ilitha Labantu spokesperson Siyabulela Monakali said it is deeply saddening to witness continued violence perpetrated against women and children across all sectors of society. 'Between January and March 2025 alone, 966 women and 314 children were murdered. In the first quarter of this year, 5,727 people lost their lives to murder and over 24,000 sexual offences were reported and 10,688 reported cases of rape. "These are not mere statistics. They represent shattered lives, broken families, and communities living in trauma. Year after year, the same systemic failures are raised, and year after year, they remain unresolved. South Africa does not lack insight into the root causes and consequences of GBVF; what is missing is decisive leadership and meaningful implementation,' said Monakali. While commemorating Women's Month, Monakali said they remained deeply concerned about the low conviction rate of offenders and the persistently high prevalence of violence against women and children in South Africa. 'We must ask ourselves critical questions: Are we truly winning the fight against GBVF, or are we more concerned with creating the appearance of progress, ticking boxes, and meeting targets on paper while failing survivors in reality? The latter appears to be true.

Alleged killers of Mpumalanga cop traced to Eswatini
On August 14, the Royal Eswatini Police (REP), with the assistance of Commissioner Vusie Manoma Masango, traced three suspected killers to Eswatini. Lowvelder reports that the suspects allegedly shot and killed Sergeant Lawrence Mtshweni on August 8, while he and fellow officers were responding to a burglary at a business centre in Schoemansdal. According to the REP, two additional suspects were later traced to the Sishweleni region. When they noticed the police, they allegedly opened fire, prompting officers to return fire and fatally shoot both suspects. In a statement, National Commissioner of Police General Fannie Masemola thanked the cross-border operation and Masango for assisting in tracing the killers to Eswatini. 'On behalf of SAPS and Mtshweni's family, we would like to thank the REP, led by Masango, as well as the Umbutfo Defence Force for assisting Mpumalanga SAPS in locating these killers. We look forward to strengthening and deepening our co-operation on law enforcement matters. 'The attacks and killing of our police officers are a serious concern, and we call on communities to help put a stop to these killings. From April 1 to date, we have already lost six police officers; we cannot afford to lose more. We need as many boots on the ground as possible to prevent and combat crime,' says Masemola. Further investigation led Eswatini police to Mantambe in Shiselweni, where a third suspect allegedly took his own life with a pistol before police could arrest him. Mpumalanga police spokesperson Brigadier Donald Mdhluli extended his condolences to Mtshweni's family. 'Mtshweni's sacrifice is a stark reminder of the risks our police officers face every day. It is a profound loss, not only for his family and friends, but for the entire SAPS community and the society he diligently served. Thank you for allowing him to dedicate his life to serving our nation. Your support and sacrifices have undoubtedly contributed to his ability to uphold the values we hold dear in SAPS.' SAPS leadership, led by Masemola, will attend the funerals of three members who died in the line of duty this past week. Mtshweni will be buried on Saturday, August 16, in Schoemansdal.
