Odisha police arrests mastermind in explosives loot case
Rourkela , Odisha police on Sunday arrested the prime accused and mastermind behind the loot of five tonne of explosives by Maoists from a vehicle near a store quarry in Sundergarh district on May 27, an official said.
The arrested accused has been identified as George Munda alias Kulu from Banko village under K Balang police station.
Munda was passing important information to the Maoists. He was the main conspirator from the beginning of the loot and actively passed information to the Maoists, said DIG Brijesh Rai.
During the investigation, George's complicity was found by the police. He was living just opposite to the quarry and was objecting to it, which was closed down subsequently, Rai said.
It was he who had passed the information regarding the movement of the vehicle with explosives and ensured that the loot was carried out without any problem, the police said.
Around 200 packets of explosives, mostly gelatin sticks, were looted by Maoists at gun-point on May 27 while those were being transported to a stone quarry for blasting rocks.
A day after the looting, Odisha DGP Y B Khurania and other senior police officers visited the spot and an NIA team also started investigating the matter.
Odisha Police have also constituted an SIT to probe into the incident.
Security personnel on May 30 recovered a substantial amount of the explosives looted by Maoists in Sundergarh district following a fierce gun battle with the red rebels. They found the stolen explosives in a dense forest in Jharkhand, around three km from the Odisha border.
So far, 3.8 tonne of explosives have been recovered while search is still going on to recover the remaining explosives, they said.

Anmol (25) was arrested by US immigration authorities in November 2024 for allegedly travelling with fake documents. He was allegedly involved in Punjabi singer Sidhu Moosewala's killing in May 2022, and was the 'mastermind' in the murder of NCP leader and former Maharashtra minister Baba Siddique last year. According to sources, state police officers found that over the past few months, Noni Rana (Surya Pratap), the younger brother of Kala Rana (Virender Pratap), who is a known gangster from Haryana's Yamunanagar, has been making calls from the US and collecting money on behalf of Bishnoi. 'Nowadays, gangsters do not make extortion calls directly from the US but use VPN services linked to other countries,' they said. Grenade attack on police post in SBS Nagar: NIA chargesheet against 3
Chandigarh: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has chargesheeted three accused in the 2024 case relating to a grenade attack on a police post in Punjab's SBS Nagar (Nawanshahr) district. The incident has been traced to the banned terror outfit, Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF), the NIA said Sunday. "Yugpreet Singh, also known as Yuvi Nihang; Jaskaran Singh alias Shah; and Harjot Singh alias Jot Hundal, all hailing from Rahon village in SBS Nagar, have been charged under various sections of the UAPA, Explosive Substances Act, and other related provisions," said the NIA. "The NIA has also launched investigations against the KZF chief and designated individual terrorist, Ranjit Singh, also known as Neeta; the outfit's member operative Jagjit Singh Lahiri alias Jagga alias Jagga Miapur alias Hari Singh, currently in the UK; and other unidentified terror operatives," the NIA added. "The NIA, which took over the case from the Punjab Police in March this year, found that Jagga recruited Yugpreet Singh through an acquaintance in the UK. Along with other KZF terrorists and operatives, Jagga radicalised Yugpreet and handled him via encrypted messaging applications.
