New Brighton shop owner kidnapped, Hawks investigation under way
The Hawks are investigating a kidnapping that took place in New Brighton on Tuesday evening, with 'law-enforcement agencies on the ground'.
A 38-year-old man was kidnapped outside his business in New Brighton, Gqeberha, on Tuesday evening – the latest in a disturbing trend of abductions across the Nelson Mandela Bay metro.
According to Hawks spokesperson Ndiphiwe Mhlakuvana the incident took place on Tuesday evening just as the victim was preparing to close his shop.
He was ambushed by a group of unidentified suspects who forced him into his Suzuki sedan and drove off. Minutes later, the kidnappers issued a ransom demand, Mhlakuvana said.
'There have been no further updates at this stage. Law enforcement agencies are on the ground and the investigation is ongoing.'
Troubling pattern
Over the past 12 months at least nine kidnappings – primarily motivated by ransom – have taken place in Nelson Mandela Bay:
A 45-year-old teacher was kidnapped in March 2025 outside Happydale Special School in Algoa Park. Armed men dragged her from her Toyota Fortuner shortly after she arrived. She was reunited with her family three days later. It is unclear if a ransom was paid;
Josh Sullivan, an American missionary, was abducted in April 2025 during a church service in Motherwell. He was rescued in KwaMagxaki five days later during a police operation in which three suspects were killed;
Ebrahim Moosa, a businessman from Kruisrivier near Kariega, was kidnapped in February from his business premises. He was rescued by police a week later. Two people were arrested;
Two foreign nationals were kidnapped in mid-February 2025 in an undisclosed part of Nelson Mandela Bay. Police have confirmed the case but provided few details. Investigations are ongoing;
A Dutch tourist couple were hijacked and kidnapped in December 2024 near the R335, between Jeffreys Bay and Addo. They were robbed and later released unharmed;
A Somali was abducted in Gelvandale in November 2024, held for ransom and released three days later with minor injuries. His kidnappers remain at large;
Qays Mohaned Hersi Mohamoud, a Somali student, was kidnapped in Gelvandale in November 2024. He was later released unharmed;
Kelvin Naidoo, the deputy president of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, was abducted in July 2024 and released six days later. The case sparked widespread public concern and condemnation from business leaders; and
A 56-year-old man was lured to his gate in Nemato, Port Alfred, in May 2024, where he was abducted by a woman and a group of accomplices. He was rescued by police in Gqeberha. One suspect was arrested.
In 2024, after Naidoo was abducted, the Nelson Mandela Bay Civil Society Coalition wrote to President Cyril Ramaphosa to ask for urgent intervention in the metro to deal with 'alarming and escalating levels of crime'.
'This metro used to be one of the safer metros in the country, but due to the systematic breakdown of law and order enforcement, this has become an exceptionally dangerous place for its citizens and communities. The alarming crime statistics, which include high levels of brutal shootings, robberies, hijackings, kidnappings, cybercrimes and vandalism of public and private infrastructure, cannot proceed unabated.
'These crimes have severe consequences upon the safety and security of people, especially vulnerable communities, and have serious economic ramifications in terms of the retention of much-needed investment and employment in our metro, which is in a province which now has more people unemployed than employed,' the coalition's Mongameli Peter wrote. 10 years later: Pastor convicted for operating R329m ponzi scheme in Cape Town
Pastor Colin Davids Image: file It has taken 10 years to convict Pastor Colin Davids of Platinum Forex CC, and his co-accused Derek Bredenkamp, who were found guilty of operating a ponzi scheme, soliciting investments worth R329 million from the public. The duo were convicted of fraud on Tuesday following a mammoth court case running since 2015. In 2015, the Western Cape High Court granted the preservation order to seize the assets of Platinum Forex. It was due to the successful investigation of the Financial intelligence Centre (FIC), the Hawks and the police that led to the conviction. The State proved that Platinum Forex, a close corporation based in Parow, unlawfully collected more than R100 million from unsuspecting members of the public under the guise that it was a lawful investor that invests in foreign exchange investments (forex). It was also proven that Platinum Forex was not registered as a financial service provider and was not lawfully entitled to conduct the business of a banker. According to Hawks spokesperson, Siyabulela Vukubi, Davids, 56, and Bredenkamp, 58, were convicted of fraud in the Bellville Specialised Commercial Crimes Court. 'During the period 2009 to 2015, Colin Davids, Platinum Forex CC and Derek Bredenkamp operated a ponzi scheme. "They solicited investments from the public to the amount of R329 million. "They promised investors a monthly return of 2% to 8% and guaranteed the invested amount at the end of the investment period. "The accused paid investors with another investors' money and alternatively with the new investors' money. 'The matter was investigated by the Hawks' Bellville-based Serious Commercial Crime Investigation and the court eventually found the three accused guilty on: Count 1: Contravention of section 7(1) Financial Advisory and Intermediary Services Act 37 of 2002; Count 2: Contravention of section 11(1) of the Banks Act 94 of 1990; one count of money laundering by contravening of Section 4 of POCA, Act 121 of 1998; and 56 counts of fraud. 'A confiscation order of approximately R100 million was granted against the accused and his business. 'Furthermore, the accused bail has been cancelled and they were remanded in custody awaiting sentencing that will be handed down on June 18, 2025.' According to previous court papers, shared via the National Prosecuting Authority, investigations showed that contrary to the promise made to clients that their monies would be invested in the forex market, some of the monies were in fact "invested" in short-term investment accounts held with ACM Gold and Forex Trading (Pty) Ltd, a Gauteng-based entity and Nedbank. The court papers states that Davids used some of the investors' funds to pay for two immovable properties in Plattekloof and Hermanus, motor vehicles for his wife, household expenses from retail stores such as Woolworths, Checkers and Pick n Pay. The gripping story will follow Amanda Knox, an American student wrongfully accused of murdering her roommate Meredith Kercher in 2007 while they were studying abroad in Perugia, Italy. Twenty-one-year-old Kercher's body was found in her bedroom, partly undressed and with multiple stab wounds. She had been sexually assaulted. The series chronicles Knox's unsettling odyssey - from being sentenced to 26 years in prison alongside her boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito due to inadequate circumstantial evidence, to navigating the Italian judicial system. Grace Van Patten and Giuseppe De Domenico in "The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox". Image: Instagram After a protracted battle, burdened by media scrutiny, false accusations, and personal tragedy, an Italian supreme court ultimately cleared Knox of all charges in 2015, leading to her exoneration. Grace Van Patten, popular for her role in "Tell Me Lies", stars as Knox. Van Patten's portrayal promises to capture Knox's experience, from her wrongful conviction to her difficult fight for exoneration. Sharon Horgan will portray Knox's mother, Edda Mellas, with John Hoogenakker as Knox's father, Curt. Francesco Acquaroli takes up the role of the Italian prosecutor Giuliano Mignini, Giuseppe De Domenico will embody Raffaele Sollecito, Knox's then-boyfriend, while Roberta Mattei infuses the series with intensity as Monica Napoleoni, a fierce prosecutor's aide determined to see Knox and Sollecito convicted. "The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox" will premiere on Wednesday, August 20 on Disney+. Image: Instagram The case captivated global audiences, highlighting issues of media influence and the legal injustices faced by those wrongfully accused. In an exclusive interview with "Us Weekly", Knox expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to retell her story. 'It really comes down to this idea of do I have a voice and does my voice matter in how a story is told? That is what Hulu has recognised,' Knox remarked. Meanwhile, in another online report, Meredith Kercher's sister, Stephanie Kercher said Meredith's 'strength and love remains strong after 17 years' and that she 'will forever hold a lasting legacy in friendship and kindness that no media can change'. Stephanie said her family had been through a lot and found it 'difficult to understand' how the series served any purpose. 'Meredith will always be remembered for her own fight for life, and yet in her absence, her love and personality continues to shine ... We will forever feel this indescribable void but we live by Meredith's standards with dignity.'

eThekwini Municipality responds to sabotage claims in Zandile Gumede's fraud trial
Former eThekwini mayor Zandile Gumede and her supporters. Image: Nomonde Zondi The eThekwini Municipality has on Thursday stated that it has no intention to sabotage the R320 million Durban Solid Waste (DSW) tender trial against its former mayor Zandile Gumede. Gumede is currently on trial with 21 others at the Durban High Court for numerous charges, including money laundering, racketeering, fraud, corruption, and contravention of the Municipal Finance Management Act and the Municipal Systems Act, relating to the tender. The Head of legal and compliance in the city, Malusi Mhlongo, said eThekwini was the complainant in Gumede's case. 'It is in our interest as the city for that matter to proceed,' he said. Mhlongo said there were accusations that eThekwini's City Integrity and Investigations Unit (CIIU) terminated the agreement of Integrity Forensic Solutions CC (IFS) and the Hawks to sabotage Gumede's case. He said that is not true, explaining that the agreement was entered before the former CIIU boss resigned. The IFS is the company that investigated the DSW tender irregularities after the CIIU anonymously received a stack of documents regarding the tender. In terms of that agreement, Mhlongo said the IFS was supposed to assist the Hawks and the prosecutors, and all their expenses were supposed to be paid by the municipality. Mhlongo stated that the reason the agreement between the CIIU, the Hawks, and the IFS was terminated was that the former acting head of the CIIU questioned why the municipality had to bear the costs while it was the complainant. As a result, the former acting head of CIIU terminated the agreement. He said the IFS took the municipality to court to review that decision. 'That matter is in court and it is still to be resolved,' Mhlongo added. Additionally, he said after the city reported Gumede's matter to law enforcement authorities, it was within its rights to save further use of ratepayers' money and say it's not liable for these costs because the State is now responsible for compensating the witnesses. Meanwhile, Gumede's case faced another setback on Thursday as the ninth accused, Bagcinile Nzuza, was ill. Nzuza is the wife of former city manager, Sipho Nzuza.
