Dongargaon casting yard helps Metro Ph 2 zip ahead
Nagpur: Metro Phase 2 construction is accelerating, with the 18.5 km Butibori stretch, which is the longest in the phase with 10 stations, seeing rapid development on multiple fronts — civil works, infrastructure integration and coordination with national agencies.

The establishment of a new casting yard at Dongargaon will support the production of concrete segments required for the Reach 1 viaduct, enabling faster execution of elevated track works. MahaMetro officials indicated that work on this front is progressing swiftly.
A senior official confirmed that geotechnical surveys along Wardha Road are nearly complete, and technical drawings, including viaduct elevation from road level, have also been finalised.
Equally significant is the integration of Metro construction with the realignment of National Highway 44 (NH-44). The Metro will extend from Khapri — currently the last operational station on the North-South corridor — toward the Butibori MIDC industrial estate, passing through the middle of NH-44.
This requires existing highway alignment to be shifted toward left to accommodate the Metro's elevated route, as previously reported by TOI on February 21.
MahaMetro and the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) have completed formalities for the realignment. NHAI coordinated with MahaMetro to widen the highway by 2.5 metres toward the left from Jamtha, over a stretch of 10km.
This will ensure balanced space on both sides for future road expansion to six lanes, without needing private land acquisition. Once the road is widened, the Metro will run on a new centreline on the elevated viaduct.

Construction is also progressing on the ground-level section between Khapri and the start of the elevated route. Around 2 km of at-grade section is being laid beyond Khapri before the Metro transitions onto Wardha Road. Meanwhile, slabs for two key at-grade stations — Metro City and Eco Park — have already been completed, including the utility shifting that is in progress in final stages.
The alignment also involves crossing a railway line.
MahaMetro has submitted a proposal for permission to the railway authorities and awaits approval.
Tree-cutting permissions for the Jamtha–Butibori corridor have been also secured and are almost completed, clearing the way forward for the road widening and utility works. Five of the 10 stations planned in this phase are coming up on NHAI land, making coordination critical.

Signal-free flyover proposed to ease congestion on routes connecting South Delhi with Gurgaon and Noida
Not just during the peak hours, many key stretches in South Delhi witness traffic snarls throughout the day. The Central government has finally come up with a proposal to decongest such areas — a 20-km elevated corridor to connect prominent areas in South Delhi to Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport and Gurgaon. The flyover will connect areas around AIIMS in South Delhi to Mahipalpur in Southwest Delhi. The bypass project will further be extended to the Gurgaon-Faridabad Road, said officials. The signal-free elevated corridor is estimated to cost around Rs 5,000 crore. 'At present, both Ring Road and Outer Ring Road are arterial routes, especially from Noida and Ghaziabad, for commuters travelling to Delhi airport and Gurgaon…These two stretches also provide connectivity between Noida via the DND flyway and Faridabad. Heavy traffic merges at NH-48, the Delhi-Gurgaon highway. So, traffic jams are witnessed daily,' said a senior official from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Officials said that the corridor will start from AIIMS and connect to Nelson Mandela Marg in Vasant Kunj via Ring Road. At Nelson Mandela Marg, the Centre is planning to construct a 5-km-long tunnel, which will connect the airport and Dwarka Expressway. 'This corridor will be merged with a tunnel, and another corridor will be constructed towards Gurgaon and Faridabad Road,' said a senior NHAI official, adding, 'The elevated corridor from AIIMS to Nadira Marg, further connecting to Mehrauli-Gurgaon Road and Gurgaon-Faridabad Road, will act as a parallel corridor between Delhi and Gurgaon.' The projects, to be executed by the NHAI, were discussed in a meeting between Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and L-G Vinai Kumar Saxena last week. . The Inner Ring road that connects Noida via Ashram, DND flyway and the Outer Ring Road from Kalindi Kunj is surrounded by upscale areas like Lajpat Nagar, Maharani Bagh, Moolchand, South Extension, Nizamuddin, Greater Kailash, Panchsheel Enclave, Pamposh Enclave, Chirag Dilli, Nehru Place, CR Park and is largely used by residents of South Delhi. The upcoming corridor will be a major relief to residents, officials said. Officials said the estimated cost of this project is Rs 5,000 crore, but it will be finalised after a feasibility study is done. 'Once the feasibility study is done, the existing flyovers, underpasses and metro lines will also be studied. Then a decision will be taken to go for a complete elevated corridor or there will be elevated plus underground…These are routine processes done during any upcoming new project,' said the official. In 2019, the Public Works Department in Delhi had submitted a proposal for the bypass project. While the PWD was the executing agency, the funding was to be done by the Centre. The AIIMS-Mahipalpur elevated corridor project, however, did not take off due to the pandemic. The project is now on track, according to officials. 'Currently, the bids for preparation of Detailed Project Report (DPR) have been invited, which are to be received by June 27,' said officials. This is one of the six other major upcoming infrastructure projects being planned by the Central government to decongest Delhi and improve connectivity between Delhi and neighbouring cities in NCR. Under these mega projects, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways also has a plan to construct an interchange at Kalindi Kunj intersection of Delhi-Noida Road and Agra Canal Road near Okhla Barrage. The 0.5 km stretch is expected to cost Rs 500 crore. Officials said that a feasibility study was conducted by PWD in Uttar Pradesh through the Central Road Research Institute (CRRI) in November 2022 to address the traffic problems faced by the daily commuters using the Kalindi Kunj metro station and those travelling between Delhi, Noida, and Faridabad. 'In its report, CRRI recommended the construction of an interchange and flyovers at the Kalindi Kunj intersection to eliminate the conflict of traffic. During the recent meeting, it has been emphasised to address severe traffic congestion at Kalindi Kunj, and it was suggested to NHAI to prepare a DPR for an interchange at Okhla Barrage, considering CRRI's report and the urgency of immediate remedial action,' said the officials.. Bids for preparing the DPR for this project have been invited and are expected to be received by June 23.

Traffic chaos in Mandai to ease as work on Metro station's entry gets over
1 2 Pune: The traffic situation in the Mandai area is expected to ease with Maha Metro wrapping up work on the Metro station's new entry point, paving the way for the removal of barricades that have choked the area for almost three years, thereby reducing traffic congestion. The new entry point of the Metro station, now operational at the front of Mandai, has cleared up the area, but a section on the left side remains barricaded. Maha Metro is still building shops for local vendors as a part of a rehabilitation plan, which is why the barricades are still up there, officials said. "The construction of shops is expected to be completed in the next couple of months, after which the entire area will be free of barricading," an official said. Commuters and traders in the Mandai area are, however, growing impatient with the ongoing construction work, particularly with the barricades still occupying a significant portion of the area. They have urged the authorities to expedite the completion of the remaining work, especially the construction of shops for local vendors before Ganeshotsav, which is just a couple of months away. Vendor Ashok Thite expressed frustration over the prolonged construction work in the Mandai area. "Everyone who visits the Mandai area has faced hardships owing to metro works... The authorities must understand that the visitors have been dealing with huge chaos for the last couple of years. All we want is to finish work in the next couple of months and subsequently remove barricades at the earliest," he said. With two entry points now operational and another reportedly under consideration, Thite hopes for a swift resolution to the ongoing disruptions. The Mandai station opened for commuters last Oct. According to Maha Metro, it is listed among the stations with a high commuter footfall. More than 15,000 commuters use the Metro services from Mandai every day. Mandai trader Sudip Khot highlighted a bigger challenge, saying authorities struggle to keep entry-exit points encroachment-free. "Illegal vendors, encroachment and haphazard parking are major problems in the Mandai area. Restricting encroachment around the Metro station is a huge task to avoid chaos," Khot said. Paud road resident Surekha Kulkarni said, "Access to the Mandai area has become a bit easy after the commencement of Metro station but unfinished work is causing hurdles. Even after eight months, the works are not complete in the area. There should be a strict deadline." Besides Mandai, the Maha Metro is also coming up with an additional entry-exit at Civil Court station from the Dengle bridge-end. Work on this entry point is in the final stages. CMRS team inspects Khadki station A team from the Commissioner of Metro Rail Safety (CMRS) has begun inspecting the Khadki Metro station in preparation for its opening. Maha Metro officials are addressing the CMRS team's suggestions, and once formalities are completed, the station will be opened to commuters with corresponding changes to the timetable. The metro station is strategically located near the Khadki railway station, featuring a direct landing that will facilitate seamless transfers between the Metro and railway services.
