Building the experience: Architecture with emotional resonance
Bruno Guélaff speaks of the project as both a professional milestone and a personal passion. "The Chedi Private Residences is an architectural statement, but more than that, it's a spiritual experience," he says. "We wanted each residence to evoke emotion, serenity, and belonging."
Guélaff's firm, BG Group, was born from a friendship and shared vision with co-founder Khalid Kaluti. "Our shared dream was to build a design + build studio where trust, transparency, and excellence guide everything," he says. Their expertise ranges from MEP and interiors to kitchens and automation, giving them full control over detail and delivery.
He calls The Chedi Private Residences a natural evolution: "We brought villa-style living into a tower, and that's no easy feat. Expansive layouts, 3.2-meter ceilings, deep terraces - it's all about breathing space."
All the details from exterior architecture to the interior design have been fully designed, crafted and curated by Bruno Guélaff's studio. Guélaff highlights the triplex penthouse as a personal favorite: "It has plunge pools, sweeping views - it's a true expression of what it means to live exceptionally."
But even the smallest units are crafted with the same rigor. "We deliberately broke away from cookie-cutter layouts. In this market, so much feels mass-produced. This project is our counterpoint."
His hands-on involvement is well known. "From concept sketches to material selection, I was there. That's what it takes to maintain creative integrity across 52 floors."

Stephan Schupbach, CEO of Chedi Hospitality speaks from decades of experience leading some of the world's most elegant properties. "

Mark Burns, with over 35 years in hospitality design, calls this project a career-defining moment. "It's rare to find a team where brand, developer, architect and interior designer are so aligned. That synergy is what elevates the outcome."
Burns has worked on icons from Claridge's to Eden Rock, and now oversees Chedi's global design direction. "This is our first branded residence project, and we wanted to get it right," he says. "It's a vertical resort, yes - but it's also deeply residential."
One of the key design principles was separation of flow: "We created discreet zones for residents and service support. That's something drawn from palace living. It maintains both privacy and efficiency."
His approach to sustainability is thoughtful, not flashy. "It's integrated in how we source, how we plan, how we power. True sustainability doesn't scream - it simply works." He adds: "Every detail matters. It's about elevating every touchpoint of daily life." "The lighting, sound, and material palette all transcend the Chedi ethos to enhance not just how the space looks - but how it makes you feel," Burns says. "This is luxury that lingers."

The Real Reason For Building Disneyland In Abu Dhabi
The upcoming Disneyland park in Abu Dhabi is expected to cast a powerful spell on the economy of the glitzy Middle Eastern state and it will also make Disney's magic available to people who wouldn't otherwise be able to visit its parks. It is no secret that Abu Dhabi is building theme parks to diversify its economy. Its fortune was built on fossil fuels but as its reserves are beginning to run out it has brought global theme park giants to its shores to drive tourism revenue. That's far from the only magic touch they have. Although Abu Dhabi and neighboring Dubai are seen as being playgrounds exclusively for the world's wealthiest people, the vast majority of their residents are far from billionaires. There is good reason for this. Developing a leisure sector to diversify a country's economy takes more than the wave of a magic wand. In order to do this, Abu Dhabi, Dubai and the five other states that comprise the United Arab Emirates (UAE), have built sprawling facilities and hired hundreds of thousands of people to work in them. They tend to come from nearby nations where they might not earn as much as they do in the UAE. It explains why a staggering 88.5% of the 11.4 million residents of the UAE are expats according to Global Media Insight. The number of expats from the United States is reflected in the vast array of its stores and restaurants which have made their way to the UAE. They include everything from chains like Applebee's, Dickey's Barbecue Pit and IHOP to fine dining outlets such as California's Urth Caffé and Sarabeth's which began life as a small bakery-kitchen on New York City's Amsterdam Avenue in 1981. Nevertheless, the number of U.S. expats in the UAE pales in comparison to the 5.9 million who come from India and Pakistan. Together they represent more than half of the UAE's total population and many of them are responsible for building the spectacular towering structures scattered across the country's landscape. It explains why data from the California-based Economic Research Institute shows that the average annual salary in the UAE comes to $48,993 (AED179,949) compared to $66,991 in the U.S., proving that you don't have to be a billionaire to live there. The UAE has a wide catchment area to draw on as one-third of the world's population is located within a four-hour flight of the country. It is also part of the largest global airline hub in the world, with 120 million passengers traveling through Abu Dhabi and Dubai each year. In order to welcome them as workers and tourists, the UAE has some of the friendliest visa regulations of any country. As this author has reported, the UAE and the Middle East in general are home to many of the most passionate Disney fans worldwide. So much so that when Disney announced at the height of the pandemic that it would close almost all of its iconic stores to focus instead on online sales, it opened a landmark new outlet in Kuwait. However, despite being fervent Disney fans, many residents of the UAE and the five nearby Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations aren't able to visit its theme parks. Although Disney has six resorts worldwide, its Middle East and North Africa (MENA) Instagram account focuses on just two of them as it describes itself as "the official guide to information about the amazing experiences at Disneyland Paris, Disney Cruise Line and Walt Disney World." That's because Disneyland Paris and Walt Disney World in Orlando have historically been the studio's most popular outposts for travelers from the Middle East. However, in recent years, getting there has been far from child's play. When Disneyland Abu Dhabi was announced in May, Subair Thekepurathvalappil, senior manager at Wisefox Tourism, told the Khaleej Times newspaper that getting a visa to France, where the nearest Disneyland is currently located, can be difficult for many UAE residents. In contrast, not only does the UAE have a simpler tourist visa process, but it it is set to introduce a GCC Unified Visa which will enable travelers to visit Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain without needing additional paperwork. "There's already a lot of talk in the travel industry about Disneyland Abu Dhabi. We expect it to be a massive hit, especially once the unified GCC tourist visa comes into effect. It will be a must-visit for anyone coming to this region," Subair explained. "Passports will no longer be needed for UAE families dreaming of Disney magic." The impact of this was laid bare in a separate report by the Khaleej Times in May which revealed that 23.7% of applications for visas to Europe's Schengen area filed by UAE residents were rejected last year. The dark clouds aren't just hanging over Europe. Recent data from the National Travel and Tourism Office revealed that the number of overseas visitors to the U.S. in July fell 4.9% on the previous year, only reaching around 86.6% of the pre-pandemic level despite it being one of the busiest seasons of the year. It is the latest development in a months-long trend which also saw international arrivals fall 6.6% in June. It follows a string of high-profile rejections to U.S. visa applications made by everyone from ambassadors to ordinary travelers. Indeed, in April an Indian man's story went viral after he posted on Reddit that his visa for a two week vacation to visit Disney World in Orlando was rejected after an interview which lasted just 40 seconds. In fact, a recent report by Gulf News revealed that India is one of the top ten Asian nations with the highest rejection rates for visas to the U.S. Other countries in the top ten include Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, the Philippines and China which together represent a massive 74.3% of the UAE's population. Almost half of U.S. visa applications made from Bangladesh are rejected setting a high barrier for its residents to visit Disney's stateside theme parks. Bangladeshis represent 7.38% of the UAE's population which clearly illustrates the untapped potential for Disneyland Abu Dhabi. The more people who visit the park, the more money flows into its leisure sector. As Mohamed Al Zaabi, the trailblazing boss of Abu Dhabi's theme park operator Miral, explained to this author in 2023, this strategy "is about diversification of Abu Dhabi's economy." Miral isn't stopping at Disney as it acknowledges that there are other parks in Orlando which locals would want to visit. SeaWorld is one and Miral ticked that off in 2023 when it opened by far the most advanced outpost of the marine life park. Harry Potter is another. Attractions themed to the boy wizard are found in Universal Studios parks but soon Miral will be the only other operator with them when they open in Abu Dhabi as this report recently explained. Abu Dhabi even recently debuted an exhibition of props from the Potter movies which resembles a scaled-down version of the popular behind the scenes tour in London. It's not got the tour's sweeping size but it's enough to satiate locals as they wait for the Potter theme park attractions. In contrast, when Disneyland Abu Dhabi swings open its doors it could be the Mouse's biggest park as this report revealed. It is expected to be home to the Star Wars Galaxy's Edge land giving Abu Dhabi yet another draw from Orlando. The park may be years away from opening but the force is already strong in Abu Dhabi.

How Compartés Became The New Name In Luxury Chocolate
Willy Wonka may be the epitome of fictional candy purveyors, but in real life, that's Jonathan Grahm, the owner of luxury chocolate brand Compartés. Compartés has become synonymous over the last decade with design-led fine chocolates, due in part to its chocolate-dipped fruits and cube-shaped chocolate morsels elaborately decorated with vibrant geometric prints. But the brand has actually been around since the 1950s when an Italian-American husband and wife living in Hollywood started the brand. The brand focused on European-style premium chocolate and chocolate-dipped fruits during a time when chocolate turtles, milk chocolate and hard candies dominated the American candy scene. The brand was later purchased by Grahm's parents, before he took over the helm and purchased it from them nearly 20 years ago. Initially, Grahm had planned to study law at UCLA, but had worked for the family business since his youth. The self-funded and privately-owned brand is still going strong, growing sales by more than 200% since 2020 and reaching $10 million in sales in 2024. Notably, 50% of sales come from its direct-to-consumer e-commerce business, 30% from corporate gifting and 20% from independent retailers and specialty shops. 'Tomorrow is not guaranteed with any business. So I take every opportunity that I can,' he said. 'But it's almost like kismet or fate that every year, as my business grows, I seem to be in the right position to [seize those opportunities] Some of those business opportunities include selling through HSN for a time, opening stores in the U.S., Dubai and Japan (U.S. stores closed in 2020), and collaborations with brands and entertainment like Velveeta, Woodford Reserve, and HBO's 'White Lotus.' In a wide-ranging conversation, Grahm spoke with Forbes about founder authenticity, the future growth of Compartés and his take on Dubai chocolate. What role has authenticity as an owner played for you and Compartés? Jonathan Grahm: A lot of brands, even at HSN, hire a spokesperson, and HSN offered that to me too ... but it's my story that I want to tell. That's one of the unique parts about Compartés. But back then, 13 or 14 years ago, that wasn't something that was at the forefront of marketing or people's consciousness. I'm very enmeshed with my brand. I was 15 or 16 years old when I started, and now I'm 41; every day I wake up and I think about Compartés. I do not go a day without it. Also, as I've evolved, my brand has evolved. [For example] I went through a phase 10 years ago where I was into more health foods, and we did a vegan, organic line with protein infused chocolate, and superfoods with chocolate, because it was something I was into at that moment. And now it's a big thing. Speaking of trendy foods, what do you make of Dubai chocolate? Grahm: Well, I jumped on the bandwagon. We opened some stores in Dubai at the Dubai Mall about four years ago and have a biweekly call with the team. They told me about the Dubai chocolate trend when it started, and I started producing it right away. First of all, I think it's really delicious and but I also liken it to like an updated Kit Kat. I love the crunch and creamy, and I feel like you've get a lot of that in the Dubai do five version of its and they have been phenomenal sellers. How do you continue to infuse human experience into a global brand? Grahm: Los Angeles is a really big part of the Compartés brand, because I've grown up here, and because the brand is so much a reflection of who I am, and the different stages of my life. I have less time now than I used to, but I used to go all the time to the Santa Monica farmers market, and I would buy fresh berries and produce and things to infuse into the chocolate. Even today, all the fruit is California-grown fruit. As Compartés has grown, we haven't changed the recipe and the formula throughout its evolution. But at the same time, we do new things all the time. Part of what Compartés stands for is new, exciting, fashion, art, design and style. It's always important to do new things to attract new customers and give my existing customers something new to try. For our chocolate bars, we've had over maybe 350 different flavors over time. It's almost like a fashion house, with seasonal collections for Spring, Summer, Fall and Winter. What does future growth look like? Grahm: I want to keep Compartés on the same path we've been on, because it's a unique path. It's a story that's different than anyone else's, and so far, so good. It's grown and grown just by virtue of me doing what I feel and what I want, and customers responding well to that. Before Covid-19, we had many stores in Los Angeles, which then closed, and we pivoted to being an online-only business. I miss the stores very much, but we have become way more profitable, and it's less stressful by being online-only. Every year I think I'm going to open another store, and I start looking [for places] ... I want to open another store one day, but only if the right opportunity comes, and it wasn't so difficult. But I want to bring Compartés to more people in more places. I can't think of another luxury elevated chocolate brand out there. I think about Godiva, which sold for [more than] $1 billion [in 2019] and it was in every mall everywhere. Godiva is tired now. So there's room in the market to grow my brand in a sustained, methodical way. I want people to think of Compartés as a gift that people will remember. I'm creating memories through the chocolate, and I'm creating a brand that people have a strong relationship with. It's a brand with heart and soul, and I just want to continue on that path of slow, sustained growth, and always make sure that it has the soul and the heart of me, really.

We are a new generation of talent that views Travel & Tourism as a serious global employer with long-term career potential. The sector has evolved. It is increasingly recognized as a driver of economic growth, innovation and international engagement. This is attracting ambitious women who are looking for careers that are both dynamic and globally relevant. At the same time, educational institutions have matured in how they present the sector: shifting from a purely service-oriented view to one focused on leadership, entrepreneurship, technology and global mobility. That repositioning is critical. The demand for female leadership is rising across industries, and Travel & Tourism is no exception. The challenge now is to ensure that this strong pipeline translates into leadership at the top. Gender equity should be embedded into succession planning. WTTC What will it take for women to reach parity at the executive levels in the hospitality industry? It requires structural change. Parity will not be achieved through goodwill alone. It demands data-driven targets, leadership accountability, and a willingness to challenge legacy systems and mindsets that no longer serve the needs of a modern, high-growth sector. Companies must take ownership of talent development at the executive level. This means embedding gender equity into succession planning, aligning incentives to performance on inclusion linked to results and ensuring that pathways to the C-suite are transparent and accessible. Gender-diverse leadership drives performance, innovation and resilience. The industry can no longer afford to treat this as optional. Strong professional networks play a vital role for women in hospitality. WTTC The statistics reveal that more and more women are beginning to start their own hospitality businesses. Explain this growing trend. Women are reshaping the hospitality sector through ventures that are agile, values-driven and globally connected. This shift reflects not only increased access to capital and technology, but also a determination to lead on their own terms. Some, like Andrea Grisdale of IC Bellagio, have built exceptional businesses from the ground up, guided by a clear purpose and local expertise. Others, like Gloria Fluxà, have taken forward family enterprises while embedding sustainability and innovation at scale. These different paths reflect the breadth of leadership now shaping our sector. Critically, mentorship and strong professional networks play a vital role. Women who have access to experienced guidance and supportive peer communities are more likely to lead, grow and overcome structural barriers.
