IND vs ENG 4th Test Preview, Head-To-Head At Old Trafford, Stats, Playing XIs & Key Battles

India.com7 hours ago
The battle lines are drawn, the stakes couldn't be higher, and the ghosts of Manchester loom large. As India take on England in the fourth Test of the five-match series at Old Trafford on Wednesday, the equation is simple — win or watch the series slip away.
Trailing 1-2, India not only need to break their long-standing winless streak at Old Trafford but also overcome a growing injury crisis that has thinned their pace bowling reserves. With Akash Deep ruled out and Arshdeep Singh nursing a hand injury, uncapped pacer Anshul Kamboj might be handed a dream debut. Captain Shubman Gill, speaking on the eve of the match, emphasized confidence in the bench strength, stating, 'We have enough quality to get 20 wickets.'
Old Trafford: A Graveyard for Indian Test Hopes
The numbers don't lie. India have played nine Tests at Old Trafford — lost four, drawn five, and never won. The last time India played here in 2014, they suffered an innings defeat under MS Dhoni's leadership. The only Indian century at this ground? That came from the bat of a young Sachin Tendulkar in 1990.
England, on the other hand, have made Old Trafford a fortress. Of the 84 Tests they've played here, they've won 33 — including 14 out of 20 since 2000. Chris Woakes and Joe Root have enjoyed personal success at the venue, with Woakes averaging under 18 with the ball and Root scoring nearly 1,000 runs.
Standout Performers: Series Heroes So Far
Shubman Gill – India's Run Machine
Leading from the front, Gill has been nothing short of spectacular. With 607 runs in six innings at an eye-watering average of 101.16, his double hundred at Edgbaston has already become the stuff of legend. Now, 105 runs away from becoming India's highest run-getter in a Test series against England, Gill carries the hopes of a billion fans on his shoulders.
Rishabh Pant – The Grit Factor
Despite a painful finger blow, Pant has amassed 425 runs at 70.83, showing trademark flair and resilience. His ability to counterattack under pressure could be India's X-factor in Manchester.
Jamie Smith – England's Breakout Star
England's wicketkeeper Jamie Smith has taken the series by storm, scoring 415 runs at 103.75. His 272-run masterclass in the third Test tilted the balance of the series. India must find a way to neutralize him.
The Bowling Duel: Siraj, Bumrah vs Stokes, Woakes
Mohammed Siraj leads the wicket charts with 13 scalps, including a fiery 6/70 spell at Edgbaston. Jasprit Bumrah, back in form, has claimed 12 wickets in just two Tests — including a fifer at Lord's that nearly turned the tide.
For England, Ben Stokes has led from the front — 11 wickets and endless spells of relentless pressure. Chris Woakes has thrived in home conditions and could be England's trump card again.
Historic Milestones on the Horizon
Shubman Gill: Needs 66 runs to surpass Virat Kohli as India's highest-scoring Test captain vs England. Yashasvi Jaiswal: 55 runs shy of 1,000 Test runs vs England. Rishabh Pant: 127 runs away from reaching 3,500 Test runs.
Ben Stokes: 109 runs short of the 7,000-run milestone in Tests.
Key Head-to-Head Stats: England vs India in Tests
Overall Tests: 139 | England 53 wins | India 36 wins | Draws 50 At Old Trafford: 9 Tests | England 4 wins | India 0 | Draws 5
In England: 67 Tests | England 36 wins | India 9 wins
Probable XIs: Who Takes the Field?
England: Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (c), Jamie Smith (wk), Liam Dawson, Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Jofra Archer.
India: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Karun Nair, Shubman Gill (c), Rishabh Pant (wk), Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Washington Sundar, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Anshul Kamboj.
What's at Stake: Legacy, Redemption, and a Series Decider
For Shubman Gill's India, this Test is more than just a match — it's a battle against history, pressure, and adversity. For England, it's a golden chance to seal the series and underline their dominance at home. With a potential series decider on the cards, expect drama, brilliance, and maybe a twist or two.
Can India end the Old Trafford hoodoo and script history? Or will England extend their reign at their happy hunting ground? All eyes on Manchester.

Meet Anshul Kamboj - Haryana pacer who took 10 wickets in an innings in Ranji Trophy, makes India debut in Manchester

Haryana pacer Anshul Kamboj was handed his India Test debut on Wednesday against England in the fourth Test at Old Trafford in Manchester. Kamboj, who was a part of the India A squad during their tour of England last month, was a late addition to the senior side after the visiting side were hit by a couple of injuries. Kamboj's debut comes in after pacer Arshdeep Singh was ruled out of the fourth Test due to an injury he suffered on his bowling hand at nets. India also made another two changes - Shardul Thakur and Sai Sudharsan replacing of Nitish Kumar Reddy and Karun Nair. Kamboj thus became the second Indian player to be handed his debut in the ongoing Test series. Sudharsan was handed his Test debut in the first Test in Leeds which India lost by five wickets. Born in Karnal, Kamboj made his first class debut for Haryana in 2022. The young pacer came into limelight when he took 17 wickets in 10 matches in their triumphant Vijay Hazare campaign in 2023. Kamboj's ability to exploit the subtle movement caught the eyes of IPL scouts and was signed by Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL). With very little chances at Mumbai Indians, Kamboj got traded to Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2025. He played eight matches for his eight wickets at an economy of exactly 8. His moment of magic came in November last year when he became just the third pacer in Ranji Trophy to take all 10 wickets in an innings against Kerala. For hi 10 wickets, Kamboj bowled 30.1 overs, including nine maidens and conceded 49 runs. For India A against England Lions, Kamboj played two games and picked up three wickets. But the highlight of Kamboj's stay in the United Kingdom was the 51 not out in the second game in Northampton in the second innings in a drawn encounter.

IND vs ENG 4th Test: 'Could have been 3-0 up' - Ravi Shastri's warning for India in crucial Manchester Test

Captain Shubman Gill and teammates line up for the anthems ahead of Day 1 of the 4th Test Match in Manchester, England (Photo by) As India face off against England in the crucial 4th Test at Manchester, the stakes are higher than ever. A win for the hosts would mean that a series victory would be out of reach for India, but a win for India would mean that the series will be decided in the final Test at The Oval. Ahead of the day's play, former India head coach and legend Ravi Shastri made sharp observations about how the visitors can avoid a repeat of the heartbreak they faced at Lord's and level the series. Backing the Shubman Gill-led side to level the series and bounce back from defeat, the 63-year-old said, "India could have been 3-0 up for all you know, but they'll have to work hard in this session." He also warned the Indian side, who were sent out to bat by England skipper Ben Stokes , who won the toss and opted to bowl, to keep focus on the first 30 overs and not lose too many wickets. "This is the first time you're getting close to English conditions. It's overcast, there's a bit of grass on the surface. There's pace around in the form of Jofra Archer. So their main aim would be those first 30 overs. Don't lose more than three wickets, then take it from there," warned Shastri. Big questions for India before 4th Test: No.3 dilemma, Kamboj debut, pitch worries The veteran also warned that the hosts are probably the more threatening side in this match, "England are a more dangerous side when they can play both ways. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Why seniors are rushing to get this Internet box – here's why! Techno Mag Learn More Undo We know they can go full throttle at the top, they can go at four-and-a-half, five runs per over if they want," added the former head coach. India's luck in the toss has been far from ideal, with Shubman Gill failing to win a single toss yet since he took charge as India's Test captain. Poll Who do you think will win the 4th Test between India and England? India England Draw For India, Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul opened the game, as the visitors will look to get off to a solid start on Day 1 at Old Trafford Cricket Ground. With the unavailability of Nitish Kumar Reddy and Akash Deep, India have handed Haryana pacer Anshul Kamboj his debut. Sai Sudharsan has replaced Karun Nair in the playing XI as well.
