Baseball: Shohei Ohtani dazzles on mound as Dodgers stop skid against Giants

Kyodo News13-07-2025
SAN FRANCISCO - Shohei Ohtani pitched three shutout innings on Saturday in his longest outing for the Los Angeles Dodgers, helping the team snap a seven-game losing streak in a 2-1 win over the San Francisco Giants.
The two-way superstar's fifth start in a Dodger uniform was his best to date, marking another encouraging step in his pitching comeback following his second major elbow surgery in September 2023.
He retired nine of the 11 batters he faced at Oracle Park, striking out four and working around a walk and a base hit while throwing 36 pitches, 25 of them for strikes.
The three-time MVP was locked in from the outset against the Giants, striking out the side on 12 pitches in the first inning. He got through the second on 23 pitches, with his efficiency enabling him to come back out for the third.
"It was a good three innings," said Ohtani, who also went 0-for-4 as the Dodgers' leadoff hitter. "The best thing was that the high velocity came naturally, while I focused on my command and emphasized creating a rhythm."
Michael Conforto went 3-for-4 while Kim Hye Seong and Tommy Edman each drove in a run for the Dodgers.
At Petco Park, Yu Darvish made his second start of the season for the San Diego Padres in their 5-4 win against the Philadelphia Phillies. The veteran right-hander did not factor in the decision after allowing four runs on five hits and three walks, while striking out two over 4-2/3 innings.

Ohtani reaches milestone with 1,000th career hit in MLB

In Major League Baseball, two-way Japanese star Ohtani Shohei of the Los Angeles Dodgers has marked his 1,000th career hit, and it was a home run at that. Ohtani appeared in the third of a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals in Los Angeles on Wednesday. He started as both the leadoff batter and the pitcher. Ohtani came up to the plate for his second at-bat in the third inning. The Dodgers were trailing by one run, with one out and a runner on second. He connected powerfully with an inside pitch, sending the ball over the center field fence for a go-ahead home run. The two-run homer became Ohtani's 39th of the season, and he reached the 1000-hit career milestone in his eighth season in the MLB. His homer was clocked at 176.2 kilometers per hour. It was his first home run in 10 games, since July 26. He also showed a strong performance on the mound, pitching four innings for the first time this season and striking out eight batters. The Dodgers lost the game 3-5, racking up one win and two losses in the three-game series against the Cardinals.

Shohei Ohtani pitches and homers for 1,000th hit in Dodgers' loss to Cardinals

Shohei Ohtani recorded the 1,000th hit of his MLB career in impressive style, belting a two-run homer as part of an impressive two-way display, but it was not enough to get the Los Angeles Dodgers past the St. Louis Cardinals, who rallied for a 5-3 victory on Wednesday at Dodger Stadium. As the Dodgers' starting pitcher, Ohtani struck out eight and allowed just two infield singles in four dominant innings. At the plate, he recorded his milestone hit in the third inning with a two-run blast that put Los Angeles up 2-1. It was his 39th home run of the season, one behind National League leader Kyle Schwarber and three behind MLB leader Cal Raleigh. The Dodgers couldn't hold on to the early lead, however. Ohtani joined newly minted Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki and Hideki Matsui as the only Japanese-born players to reach 1,000 hits in the major leagues. Ichiro finished his career with 3,089 hits, and Matsui had 1,253. Ohtani's performance also quelled concern over his previous pitching start, which he departed early due to cramping in his right hip. Having returned to the mound this year after a nearly two-year absence in the wake of elbow surgery, he pitched four innings for the first time this season. The Cardinals took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on a two-out RBI bunt single from Brendan Donovan. Ohtani then put the Dodgers ahead with his two-run home run in the bottom half. Los Angeles went up 3-1 in the fourth when Andy Pages singled, moved to second on a wild pitch, stole third and came around to score on a throwing error by Cardinals catcher Pedro Pages. St. Louis got the run back in the sixth on a Lars Nootbaar groundout. Jordan Walker had a game-tying single in the eighth inning, and Masyn Winn scored the go-ahead run on an error. The Cardinals added one more run in the ninth on an RBI double from Nootbaar. Three St. Louis relievers held Los Angeles without a run over the final five innings, while right-hander Riley O'Brien pitched 1⅓ innings for his first career save. JoJo Romero (4-3) did not allow any runs over one inning of work to earn the win.

Baseball: Shohei Ohtani homers for 1,000th career hit, fans 8 in 4 innings

LOS ANGELES (Kyodo) -- Shohei Ohtani recorded his 1,000th major league career hit with a two-run homer and struck out a season-high eight over four innings in the Los Angeles Dodgers' 5-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals on Wednesday. The two-way star turned the Dodgers' 1-0 deficit into a 2-1 lead when he launched his 39th home run of the season to center field off Matthew Liberatore at Dodger Stadium. Ohtani joined new Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki and Hideki Matsui as the third Japanese-born player to reach 1,000 hits in the majors. Ichiro had 3,089 hits and Matsui 1,253. At the plate, Ohtani went 1-for-3 with the two RBIs and a walk while allowing one run and two hits in his eighth mound start of the season. The Cardinals scored first on an RBI bunt single by Brendan Donovan in the third inning. Ohtani struck out the last four batters he faced in a 54-pitch outing. "I thought it was a big day for me personally getting to the fourth inning," Ohtani said through interpreter Will Ireton. "I think that was really good in terms of building up where I am." "I don't really try to think too differently on days that I pitch and hit and on days that I only hit." The Cardinals scored two runs in the eighth to take the lead for good at 4-3. Among other Japanese players, Chicago Cubs designated hitter Seiya Suzuki drove in two runs with a sacrifice fly and his 27th home run of the season in a 6-1 victory over the Cincinnati Reds.
