Writers must become readers' voice: Jnanpith awardee
He was speaking at the release of poet and critic HM Pernal's poetry collection, 'Zanel', at the MCC Bank Auditorium on Friday.
"Today's readers have changed. They seek themselves in literature. Writers must become their voice. HM Pernal's poems resonate with this conflict. His verses often carry a dark hue, but within that darkness lies an undeniable truth, presented with unique sarcasm," Mauzo said.
Chief guest Michael D'Souza, a promoter of Vision Konkani, praised Pernal's dedication to preserving and promoting Konkani literature.
"There are three things we must never forget: Our parents, our mother tongue, and our motherland. HM Pernal and his peers have upheld these values through their literary efforts. Vision Konkani has already released 21 works by Konkani writers, and this momentum must continue," he said.
Poet Melvyn Rodrigues, convener of the Konkani Language Advisory Board at Sahitya Akademi, New Delhi, introduced 'Zanel' and Pernal. He noted that Pernal's poems transform ordinary experiences into profound truths. "They may appear dark at first glance, but within that darkness lie unspoken realities," Rodrigues said.
Nandagopal Shenoy, president of the World Konkani Centre, and Kishoo Barkur, president of Kavita Trust, were present on the dais. HM Pernal delivered the welcome address.

Delilah Lobo, vice-chairperson of the Entertainment Society of Goa, voiced the organisation's ambition to position Goa as a capital of art and culture through hosting premier festivals. The festival's chief guest, South Indian comedian Mohammad Ali, who boasts a prolific career spanning 47 years and 1,265 films across Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi, and Nepali cinema, expressed enthusiasm about engaging with Konkani cinema. Mohanlal's Sadayam prison scenes were shot in a real cell with a dark past — it once held serial killer 'Ripper' Chandran. When Sadayam released in 1992, it cemented Mohanlal's reputation for taking on complex and intense roles. Directed by Sibi Malayil and written by Jnanpith awardee M.T. Vasudevan Nair, the psychological drama became one of Malayalam cinema's most striking portrayals of a man on death row. However, behind the scenes, the production carried an unsettling real-life connection to a notorious criminal case. For authenticity, key sequences were filmed inside the historic Kannur Central Jail. In the film, Mohanlal played Sathyanathan, a convict sentenced to death for killing two girls and two men. The cell chosen for his character had once housed 'Ripper" Chandran, a convicted serial killer who was executed there. Mohanlal revealed that the rope used in a hanging scene was not a prop but the same one employed in an actual execution 13 years earlier. 'The film was shot in Kannur Central Jail, and the room I stayed in during the shoot was once occupied by Ripper Chandran, who was on death row. Before him, a man named Balakrishnan had stayed there.
