United front going into polls vital for Sabah's stability, says Hajiji
KOTA KINABALU: With preparations for Sabah's 17th State Election in full swing, Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor says it is important to form a strong coalition to ensure continued stability.
Hajiji, who leads the eight-party Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS), confirmed that seat talks among coalition parties will be held soon, with a focus on presenting a united front going into the polls.
'As the state government, it is our responsibility to determine which parties we wish to collaborate with for the upcoming election,' he said after attending Sabah Energy Corporation's Hari Raya open house on Tuesday (April 22).
Hajiji stressed that GRS remains open to any political cooperation that would benefit Sabah and foster long-term political cohesion in the state.
However, he has kept the planned election date under wraps, telling reporters he has yet to 'dream about it".
Speaker Datuk Seri Kadzim Yahya had said earlier that the state assembly's current five-year term will end on Nov 11.
There has been speculation that Hajiji may opt to see the assembly's term through.
After earlier speculation that he would call for the polls this month after Hari Raya, political circles now feel the polls could be called in July.
This would follow the month-long Kaamatan celebrations in May and the official birthday of Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Musa Aman on June 21.

GRS yet to finalise PRN17 alliance decision
PITAS: Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) has expressed the same view as Sabah Barisan Nasional (BN) in refusing to cooperate for the upcoming 17th Sabah State Election (PRN17). GRS secretary-general Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun, however, said the coalition has yet to make a final decision on any political cooperation until its supreme council meeting, expected to be held later this month or early next month. "We have not held a Supreme Council meeting to decide on this matter yet. "However, I believe the president has met with all the component party presidents, and I'm sure he has also had informal meetings with Pakatan Harapan (PH) leaders. "Only after gathering feedback from all members and component parties can we decide whether to go solo or work together," he said when met by the media after launching the Cinta Sekolah Saya (Love My School) programme for the Pitas district at Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Kanibongan on Tuesday. Masidi was responding to questions on whether GRS would collaborate with BN and PH in the coming state election. He also said that the Chief Minister, who is also GRS Chairman, has repeatedly stressed his preference for a PH-GRS alliance going into the election. According to Masidi, the main rationale behind continuing the PH-GRS partnership is to ensure political stability. He cited Sarawak as an example, pointing out that the state enjoys strong political stability, which has clearly contributed to its ability to focus on economic development. When asked whether GRS would proceed independently if PH and BN , currently partners at the federal level decide to join forces for PRN17, Masidi said such a situation could be interpreted in many ways. "BN/Umno Sabah leaders have repeatedly expressed that they do not want to collaborate with GRS. "That's the rather unpleasant reality. "GRS members and leaders have frequently stated that they feel more comfortable with PH while waiting for decisions on allocations and seat distribution.

‘Solo or coalition' decision July

Kota Kinabalu: The question of whether the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) will contest solo in the imminent 17th State Election (PRN17) or maintain its partnership with Pakatan Harapan (PH) is expected to be answered by early July at the latest, said GRS Sec-Gen Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun. He said the decision would likely be finalised during the GRS Supreme Council meeting, which is expected to convene either later this month or early next month. Advertisement Masidi also confirmed that although GRS has yet to make an official decision on its election strategy, GRS Chairman cum Sabah's Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Haji Noor has met with leaders of the coalition's component parties and held informal talks with PH leaders. 'We haven't made a final decision yet because the Supreme Council has not met. However, I believe the President has already met with all the component party presidents. 'I'm confident he has also held informal discussions with PH leaders. One thing is certain—if not this month, then by early next month we will know,' he told the media in Pitas on Tuesday. The GRS Supreme Council is composed of the presidents of the coalition's eight component parties: Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah (Gagasan Rakyat), GRS, PBS, Star Sabah, SAPP, Usno, Parti Harapan Rakyat Sabah, Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS). 'He (Hajiji) has indicated that GRS is inclined to continue the PH-GRS cooperation, which has formed the foundation of the unity government in both Sabah and Putrajaya. 'If I'm not mistaken, the Chief Minister has repeatedly emphasised his desire for the PH-GRS cooperation to continue in the coming election. 'The main reason is to ensure political stability,' he said. It was reported that Sabah Pakatan may agree to a seat-sharing formula with GRS and Sabah Barisan helmed by Datuk Seri Bung Moktar Radin. However, GRS and Sabah Barisan are expected to cross swords as there is no love lost between Hajiji and Bung, following a failed attempt by the latter to unseat the GRS government last January. Bung had pulled Sabah Barisan out of the GRS coalition in 2023 after a fallout with Hajiji. Bung is said to be courting other parties like Parti Warisan led by Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal and Parti Kesejahteraan Demokratik Masyarakat (KDM) led by Priscella Peter, the daughter of its jailed president Datuk Peter Anthony. But Warisan and KDM do not seem keen on any tie-up, with both publicly stating their intention to go it solo. GRS component parties like Sabah STAR, SAPP and Usno prefer GRS to go solo, although Hajiji was inclined to work with Sabah Pakatan. Warisan has decided to opt out of any pact in Sabah although it is a partner of the federal unity government. GRS likely to team up with PH, says Masidi
Masidi PITAS (June 10): Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) shares the same sentiment regarding Sabah Barisan Nasional's (BN) reluctance to team up with the coalition in the upcoming 17th State Election (PRN17). However, GRS secretary-general Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun said they have not made a firm decision on the matter until the Supreme Council meeting, which is expected to take place either this month or early next month. 'We have not made a firm decision. We are yet to hold a meeting of the Supreme Council to decide. But nevertheless, I think the president has met up with all the presidents of the component parties and I'm sure he also met informally the leaderships of the PH. 'After having met and getting feedback from all members as well as feedback from our friendly parties, we should be able to make a decision whether we are going alone or we are teaming up,' he said to reporters when asked whether GRS will work with BN and Pakatan Harapan (PH) to face PRN17. 'But if I'm not mistaken, the Chief Minister, who is also the chairman of the GRS, has emphasised many times that he would like the PH-GRS combination to face the elections,' he added. Masidi said the whole idea of continuing the PH-GRS alliance is about stability. Citing Sarawak as an example, Masidi said the state enjoys tremendous political stability, which has clearly contributed to its ability to focus on economic development. Sabah, he said, would also like to follow suit. When asked whether GRS would go solo if PH and BN (now aligned at the federal level) decide to join forces for PRN17, Masidi said there are many ways to interpret the situation. 'The Sabah BN/Umno leadership has said many times that they don't want to work with GRS. And unfortunately, the feeling is really mutual. 'And that basically sums up the rather uneasy truth, if ever there is a political truth between all the political parties. Our members and leaders of GRS have said many times that they are quite comfortable with PH, pending allocations and division of seats. 'They find it rather difficult to work with BN for reasons that have been stated many times,' he said after launching SMJ Energy's Education CSR Programme at SMK Kanibongan here on Tuesday.
