Gang members targeted by police in Athens area, 8 arrested
Several law enforcement agencies targeted gang members during an operation in the Athens area this week.
On Thursday, March 20, the Department of Community Services in collaboration with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, FBI Safe Streets Task Force, the Clarke County Sheriff's Office, and the United States Probation Office, conducted the joint operation.
They performed compliance checks, spoke with, and served warrants to verified gang members associated with known street gangs in Athens-Clarke County.
Eight people who had active warrants for their arrest were picked up.
'This operation underscores the power of collaboration. By working together, we continue to successfully disrupt dangerous criminal street gangs and make our community safer. Together, we will continue to hold offenders accountable and protect those we serve,' Chief Jerry Saulters, Athens-Clarke County Police Department said.

Ex-wife of deceased veteran sentenced to prison for falsely receiving surviving spouse benefits
The ex-wife of a deceased U.S. Army veteran has been sentenced to a couple of months in prison for fraudulently receiving spousal benefits. Miranda Rachel Briggs, 34, of Rincon, Georgia, pleaded guilty to wire fraud on Jan. 15, 2025. A judge sentenced her to two months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release after she completes her prison term. She is also ordered to pay more than $129,000 in restitution to the Veterans Administration. According to court documents, Briggs married a U.S. Army veteran in November 2015. Less than a year later, she filed for divorce. Two weeks after the divorce was final, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs granted the veteran's request to remove Briggs as a recipient of benefits. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] When the veteran died in 2018, Briggs filed for VA benefits, falsely claiming to be the veteran's surviving spouse. In April 2018, she also claimed to be the veteran's spouse when applying for benefits from the Civilian Health and Medical Program of the Department of Veterans Affairs (CHAMPVA). After the VA initially denied her claim to the veteran's survivor benefits, Briggs submitted paperwork claiming that she and the veteran were married until his death. Based on that claim, the VA granted her the benefits. In April 2021, Briggs filed a petition to become the administrator of her ex-husband's estate after claiming in Chatham County Probate Court to be his surviving spouse. In December 2021, the Probate Court granted that petition. One week later, Briggs sued the U.S. government seeking more than $7 million in damages for the veteran's death. Before the lawsuit was settled, lawyers for the government discovered that Briggs falsely claimed to be the veteran's spouse, and the lawsuit was dismissed. In March 2023, the Chatham County Probate Court removed Briggs as the administrator of her ex-husband's estate. During her sentencing, the court noted that Briggs spent thousands of dollars on cosmetic surgeries after receiving the CHAMPVA benefits. 'Programs that financially benefit surviving family members of deceased veterans are designed to provide a safety net to those survivors,' said Acting U.S. Attorney Lyons. Man dies after tree falls on top of car in northeast GA
The Georgia State Patrol has identified a man who was killed in a car wreck over the weekend. [DOWNLOAD: Free WSB-TV News app for alerts as news breaks] On Saturday, around 6:48 p.m., GSP was called to the area of State Route 51 near Garrison Road in Banks County. When troopers arrived, they learned that Jason Keith Payne, 56, of Carnesville, was driving a 2000 Nissan Altima. Officials said that while Payne was traveling eastbound, a tree on the south side of State Route 51 fell across the road, hitting the top of the car. Payne was pronounced dead at the scene. According to GEMA, the 56-year-old is believed to have been killed when a line of storms moved through metro Atlanta on Saturday, bringing damaging winds and heavy rain. Gov. Brian Kemp shared his condolences in a post on X. Suspected drunk driver arrested after hitting two cars, house in Dayton
A suspected drunk driver hit two parked cars and a house in Dayton early Saturday morning, according to a Dayton Police Department crash report. The driver was identified in the report as Laquan Riley of Dayton. No one was injured inside the house. It is unclear how fast Riley was driving at the time of the crash. Medics took Riley to Miami Valley Hospital with suspected minor injuries, according to the report. Dayton police officers note in the report that they believe Riley was driving under the influence of alcohol. An OVI test was given, but the results are currently unknown, according to the report. At the time of writing, Montgomery County Jail records show that Riley is in custody on preliminary charges of OVI, carrying a concealed weapon, using weapons while intoxicated, and improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle.
