Gang members targeted by police in Athens area, 8 arrested
On Thursday, March 20, the Department of Community Services in collaboration with the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, FBI Safe Streets Task Force, the Clarke County Sheriff's Office, and the United States Probation Office, conducted the joint operation.
They performed compliance checks, spoke with, and served warrants to verified gang members associated with known street gangs in Athens-Clarke County.
Eight people who had active warrants for their arrest were picked up.
'This operation underscores the power of collaboration. By working together, we continue to successfully disrupt dangerous criminal street gangs and make our community safer. Together, we will continue to hold offenders accountable and protect those we serve,' Chief Jerry Saulters, Athens-Clarke County Police Department said.

CDC Gunman Identified as 30-Year-Old Vaccine Skeptic
The man who opened fire on the Centers for Disease Control and killed a police officer has been identified as 30-year-old Georgia resident Patrick Joseph White. Investigators believe that White, who killed a police officer on Friday, targeted the CDC because of a hatred of the COVID-19 vaccine, according to CNN. White, who was either ill or believed himself to be ill because of the vaccine, died at the scene, though it is not known whether he was shot or killed himself. White lived in Kennesaw, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta, where the CDC headquarters are located and the shooting took place. White's neighbors told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he lived at home with his parents and helped out around the neighborhood by mowing lawns, trimming shrubs, and walking dogs. Nancy Hoalst, who lived across the street from White, said she noticed a change in his behavior in recent months as he grew fixated on the COVID vaccine. 'He was very unsettled, and he very deeply believed that vaccines hurt him and were hurting other people,' Hoalst told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. 'He emphatically believed that.' She said that she was not aware that White had any violent impulses. 'I didn't know he had those tendencies,' she said. 'I had no idea he thought he would take it out on the CDC.' Hoalst otherwise remembers White as friendly—she recalled that he blew leaves off her driveway ahead of Halloween. 'He seemed like a good guy,' she said. 'He would volunteer to walk dogs. He did good things.' Another neighbor, Josh Shirah, told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution that he 'thought [White] was a pretty stand-up guy—quiet, but never confrontational.' 'I was never worried about him doing something like this,' Shirah added. White opened fire on CDC buildings around 5 p.m. on Friday, taking aim from a CVS pharmacy directly across the street from the entrance to the agency's campus, prompting a lockdown and a shelter-in-place order. The shooting, which occurred near the Emory University campus, created fear and anxiety for nearby residents, some of whom posted clips of the gunfire to social media. During the shooting, White killed DeKalb County Police Officer David Rose, who was responding to the scene. Rose, 33, had been on the job for nearly a year. He was married with two children—with another one on the way. White was found shot dead on the second floor of the CVS. Asked for comment, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation told the Daily Beast that it has no other information to release at this time. While the CDC was responsible for the roll-out of the COVID vaccines, the agency is now overseen by Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a vaccine skeptic who has sought to dismantle its legacy. Kennedy released a statement addressing the incident on Saturday. 'We are deeply saddened by the tragic shooting at CDC's Atlanta campus that took the life of officer David Rose. We stand with his wife and three children and the entire CDC family,' it read. 'We know how shaken our public health colleagues feel today. No one should face violence while working to protect the health of others.'

Police Officer Dead After Shooting at CDC HQ in Atlanta
A police officer was killed during a shooting at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's Atlanta campus at Emory University. Shots were first reported just before 5 p.m. local time near the Emory Point CVS, prompting Emory University to issue an emergency alert and an order to shelter in place and for the CDC campus to be locked down. The shelter-in-place order for the university has been lifted, as police have confirmed there is no further threat, though the CDC campus remains on lockdown. Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens expressed his gratitude to law enforcement for responding swiftly to secure the scene. DeKalb County Police confirmed that one of their officers who responded to the situation was killed. While his name was not released, DeKalb County CEO Lorraine Cochran-Johnson mentioned his family, a pregnant wife, and their two children in her statement to the press. 'Let's join together to give this family the support it needs during this traumatic loss,' she said. The suspected gunman is also dead. CNN reported that his father called law enforcement before the shooting occurred to report that his son was suicidal. Photos circulating on social media show that some bullets hit a CDC building located near The Clifton School daycare. All 92 children who were in the childcare center at the time are safe, Dickens confirmed. WSB-TV spoke to one mother who walked a mile to the campus to try and get closer to her son and her wife, who was meant to be picking him up. 'Everyone appears to be safe. I just need to see them,' Kristin Coles told the station. 'I just need to hold him and be with him and know that he's OK and see him in person.' CNN spoke to law enforcement officials who shared that they believe the shooter was sick, or believed he was sick, and blamed COVID-19 vaccines, and by extension, the CDC, for his illness. Mayor Dickens, a Democrat, said that CDC employees have 'had a tough go of it in the past year,' referencing the uncertainty surrounding their job stability following massive cuts across multiple federal agencies; the CDC has lost almost a quarter of its employees since Trump took office. The CDC previously oversaw the rollout of vaccines during the coronavirus pandemic, but vaccine skeptic Robert F. Kennedy Jr. has been working to dismantle the CDC's legacy since his appointment as Health and Human Services Secretary. In June, when resigning from the agency, a top vaccine specialist said that Kennedy's promotion of anti-vax beliefs will cause 'a lot of Americans to die.' 'If it isn't stopped, and some of this isn't reversed, like, immediately, a lot of Americans are going to die as a result of vaccine-preventable diseases,' Dr. Fiona Havers told The New York Times. CDC Director Susan Monarez issued a statement on X that read, 'We at @CDCgov are heartbroken by today's attack on our Roybal Campus, which remains on lockdown as authorities investigate the shooting.' 'A courageous local law enforcement officer gave their life, and another was injured, after a gunman opened fire on at least four CDC buildings,' she continued. 'We are deeply grateful to Governor Kemp, Georgia residents, and the American people for standing with us during this difficult time.'

False statement gets consultant probation in 'dark money' probe
LANSING — A fundraising consultant has been placed on probation and fined for giving a false statement in a "dark money" investigation conducted by Attorney General Dana Nessel. Sandra Baxter, 65, of Caledonia, was initially charged with perjury, which is a felony, in February 2024 but pleaded guilty in June to knowingly providing a false statement to law enforcement, which is a misdemeanor, Attorney General Dana Nessel said in a Wednesday, Aug. 13 news release. Ingham County Circuit Judge James Jamo on Aug. 13 sentenced Baxter to three months of probation, 20 hours of community service, and a $2,500 fine, Nessel said. Baxter gave a false statement during Nessel's investigation of the "dark money" financing of the Unlock Michigan campaign of 2020 and 2021, aimed at overturning Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's emergency orders during the COVID-19 pandemic. In announcing criminal charges in February 2024, Nessel accused Baxter and another political operative of enabling and lying about a scheme to allow donors to secretly provide financial support to a ballot initiative, where public disclosure of donors was required by law. Heather Lombardini, a Lansing-area political fundraiser and consultant, still faces multiple criminal charges of violating Michigan campaign finance law by soliciting contributions for the petition drive utilizing two nonprofits tied to former Senate Majority Leader Mike Shirkey, R-Clarklake, in order to skirt disclosure requirements.
