Alexei Popyrin becomes the last Aussie standing at French Open after overcoming years of injuries and setbacks

Daily Maila day ago

Australian tennis star Alexei Popyrin has reached the fourth round of the French Open for the first time in his career and is poised to crack the world top 20 in the second week on the Paris clay.
The 25-year-old Sydneysider produced a composed and clinical performance to defeat Portugal's Nuno Borges 7-5, 6-3, 7-6(5) in hot, punishing conditions on Court 7 in Paris.
The win propels Popyrin into the second week of a Grand Slam for only the second time in his career, and for the first time at Roland Garros – a tournament where he had previously struggled to find rhythm or consistency on the red clay.
'It was a really good match from my point,' he said after sealing victory.
'Happy I wrapped it up in three sets. It's really hot out there, really difficult conditions.'
Popyrin has long been considered one of Australia's most talented ball strikers, but his path through the ATP ranks has been anything but linear.
Since winning the 2017 Roland Garros junior title, he's battled inconsistent form, coaching changes, and several injury setbacks, including groin and shoulder problems that derailed his momentum at key points in past seasons.
His breakout at this year's French Open comes as a welcome surprise for Aussie fans, particularly after top seed Alex de Minaur exited in the second round.
'We all expected Demon to be in the fourth round,' Popyrin admitted.
'I don't think I could have thought that – Alex is probably the most consistent player on tour – but that's the case now. I'm only focusing on myself. I want to keep going as far as I can, that's all I'm thinking.'
Popyrin's performance against Borges showed a level of maturity that has often eluded him in previous campaigns.
He was aggressive on serve, dominating with 12 aces and winning over 80 per cent of first-serve points.
He also handled the pressure moments with far more composure than in previous Grand Slam showings.
'I played the first set-and-a-half really, really solid, how I've been playing all week,' Popyrin said.
'But had a bit of a mental slip-up at the end of the second but managed to dig deep in the tiebreak.'
It was a match that tested both his physical and mental resilience.
'The third set was more a mental battle than a physical battle on my side,' he said.
'Trying to hold serve, and then trying to get opportunities on his return, which I had towards the end. But still managed to kind of keep my head and still play well in the tie-break.'
With the win, Popyrin becomes the last Australian remaining in the men's singles draw, carrying national hopes into the second week of the tournament.
He will now face 12th seed Tommy Paul of the United States, a powerful and athletic baseliner who has already spent over 10 hours on court through three matches.
Paul has played back-to-back five-setters and may be vulnerable to a fresher opponent.
Popyrin, who entered the tournament as the 25th seed, began his campaign with a walkover win when Japan's Yoshihito Nishioka retired due to injury.

Neighbours star Madeleine West reveals she feels like a 'smashed vase' as she details life with newborn after welcoming seventh child at age 47

Madeleine West welcomed her seventh child last month. The 47-year-old is adjusting to life with a newborn, telling The Sunday Project this weekend that while she is looking well on the outside, it's a different story behind the scenes. 'It's all smoke and mirrors. I'm just a smashed vase that someone has wrapped up with gaffa tape' she joked. 'Don't put flowers and water in me as it will leak straight back out.' The Neighbours actress continued: 'I'm on auto pilot. I'm deep in the delirium. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'At 3am I got up for a glass of water and decided it was time to scrub out the fish tank and bake a cake, which is what I did.' Madeleine was on the show to promote her partnership with the Federal Police, which has seen her produce It's Never Too Early, a guide book to keeping kids safe. 'This is so personal for me. It's things that I think most parents would never have considered. Asking yourself really simple but ultimately important questions, like, who will I allow to change my baby's nappy?' she explained. 'If I'm letting someone babysit, who else will have access to that child? Perfect example. If you let a good friend babysit, are they dating someone you don't know well? If he comes over to visit, they get up to answer the phone, am I comfortable with that person having unsupervised time with my child? 'If I look at babysitting, will there be other children in the house who have access to my child? If I'm looking at daycare centres, how can I find one that's government endorsed where everyone's been certified so I know my child is safe? 'Questions that when we're in the thick of early parenting, and we're exhausted, and on the cusp of delirium, it is hard to know the day of the week, let alone important decisions of how to best secure safety.' Madeleine announced the arrival of her seventh child in April, sharing a glimpse at her newborn in an Instagram post and revealing the bub was in excellent health. Alongside a truncated image of the child, she star wrote: 'Earthside at last… and utterly perfect'. The Australian actress did not reveal the sex or name of her new arrival at the time. It comes after Madeleine opened up about her seventh pregnancy at the age of 47. The star already shares five daughters and one son with her ex-partner, celebrity chef Shannon Bennett. In a preview for an interview on 60 Minutes, West said she is not letting naysayers get to her and is determined to keep 'dancing to the beat of my own drum'. She said many people were shocked to learn she was pregnant with yet another child at her age, but she was also 'surprised' by the sheer amount of support she received. 'There was a lot of shock, naturally. And then, "Are you sure? You're at this point in your life. Your career is blossoming. You've got all these kids,"' West told host Tara Brown. 'But I am surprised by so many people who have reached out saying, "I've done what you're doing and I felt so alone. I felt like everyone would see me at the playground and they would think I'm grandma."' When asked if she had ever been called a 'grandma at the playground', the actress responded: 'Oh yeah, naturally. But my argument has always been I've always danced to the beat of my own drum. 'I've always done things a little bit different. A little bit outside the norm.' West revealed the response she received from her friends after she announced her pregnancy in January. The TV star—who shares Phoenix, 19, Hendrix, 16, Xascha, 14, Xanthe, 12, and twins Xalia and Margaux, 10, with Shannon, 49 - said her pals' initial reaction to her pregnancy news was surprise. 'When I first reached out to my circle and revealed the big news, there was certainly a look. A bit of a stunned mullet, I would say,' she shared. However, she added the shocked expression was soon followed by 'wow' as her friends asked if she was going to 'keep' the baby. The controversial question also opened up a conversation about 'geriatric pregnancies' and the risks which come with them, which she expanded on in her interview with Stellar Magazine. 'I strive to not see motherhood as a limitation on my capacities,' she told the publication, but rather something that 'adds to it exponentially'. She went on to say while falling pregnant certainly wasn't something she was expecting, it was a welcome surprise nonetheless. 'I feel like this little person has come along at the best possible time when I'm so very ready,' she said. West went on to say she now has 'more time, wisdom and experience' when it comes to parenting. Reflecting on what is often coined as a 'geriatric pregnancy' she expressed her frustration with the world's lack of conversations around later pregnancy. West said it's not something 'society discusses at large' despite 'the very real fact that the rate of women having babies in their 40s is increasing'. Back in January, West announced she was pregnant with her seventh child a decade on from her most recent birth. She revealed the surprising news in an Instagram post. In the photo, she flaunted her growing baby bump in a tight-fitting tank top which was lifted to reveal her bare tummy. 'WHOOPS!' she captioned her post. 'Thought it was #perimenopause. I thought WRONG! It's not too much Christmas pudding either. I couldn't be happier.'

Adelaide blasted for CEO's 'ridiculous' apology after Crows star makes brutally honest assessment about lacklustre Sydney Swans

Adelaide CEO Tim Silvers has reportedly issued a formal apology to Sydney boss Tom Harley after Crows defender Wayne Milera branded the Swans 'a bit of a rabble'. But his move to apologise to the Swans CEO has split opinion among some former stars, with one branding the apology 'ridiculous'. The Swans endured a night to forget at the Sydney Cricket Ground on Saturday, suffering a 90-point loss by Matthew Nicks' side, who are shaping up to be a firm finals contender this season. The Swans, meanwhile, have slumped to 14th in the ladder, 12 points clear of the top eight, with last year's Grand Finalists having lost eight of their opening matches this season. They will no doubt receive some harsh home truths from coach Dean Cox, following the defeat. Milera told ABC after the game that the Swans were a shade of themselves during the match. 'You could sort of feel it as a group... they were sort of a bit of a rabble, just hearing them on the ground,' the 27-year-old footy star said. While that appeared to be his own personal view on the matter, it appears the Crows were not impressed by his comments. Silvers subsequently issued a formal apology to the Swans. But the move has split opinion among some pundits. Campbell Brown told Sunday Footy Feast: 'God forbid you are too honest in an interview.' The former Hawthorn star then said that the apology made the Crows 'look like the rabble': 'That's such weak leadership as far as I'm concerned. 'Do you know who the rabble is now? Adelaide for having to come out and apologise.' Kate McCarthy, an AFLW All-Australian concurred: 'The fact they've basically undermined their own player there to come out — yes, they've obviously had a conversation — but that did not need to be apologised for,' she said. 'We want that from players. He didn't at any point make that personal. They were unorganised, they were a rabble — I think Sydney would have almost admitted that. 'That is absolutely ridiculous.' But not everyone was in support of Milera's candid claims. But Footy great Jack Riewoldt did not agree, arguing that the Crows defender had disrespected the opposition side. 'One hundred per cent that's disrespectful (from Milera). Yeah, calling an opposition team 'a bit of a rabble' in a media sense,' Riewoldt told Fox Footy. 'We've just come off the conversation with Matthew Nicks about they dropped Josh Rachele (last year) for 'values'. I'd love to know where a comment like that sits in the values of the Adelaide Football Club. 'So, there's clearly some big questions on that going forward, too.' Sydney are now set to receive some harsh home truths led by Dean Cox after an 'embarrassing' 90-point loss to Adelaide left the coach questioning whether he's been doing enough at the helm. And even he issued a scathing assessment of his side's performance, branding it 'unacceptable and embarrassing'. The Swans had been looking to bounce back from a dismal 53-point loss to Melbourne. A victory would have seen them celebrate the 20th anniversary of their 2005 premiership victory in style. Instead, they endured a horror show. Kept to one goal in the opening half, Sydney conceded a staggering 12-straight majors on the way to a 21.5 (131) to 5.11 (41) loss. The Swans' finals are now looking very slim chances are slim, and the frustration on Cox's face during his post-match press conference was evident. A reminder of the team-first ethos that netted the club's first premiership in 72 years, given at half-time with a lap of honour by the 2005 side, only compounded their woes. 'I didn't expect that on such a massive night for the footy club when you have a 20-year reunion for a team that played desperate, uncompromising, ruthless football,' Cox said. 'That was far from it.' West Coast great Cox is no stranger to Sydney's Bloods ethos, with the six-time All-Australian ruck's last-gasp kick famously marked by Leo Barry in the final seconds of the low-scoring 2005 grand final. But the first-year coach conceded he was left questioning if he had done enough. 'Yeah, maybe not,' Cox said. 'That's where you've got to reflect on everything within the program, and it starts with me. 'We are going to fight our way through this. 'And there's going to be no easy way through it. I said to them (the players), expect some tough sessions. That'll happen.' The statistics sheet will suggest an even contest between the two sides, with Sydney winning clearances (+13), stoppage clearances (+13) and contested possessions (+11). But Sydney crumbled under Adelaide's pressure, making uncharacteristic errors and giving away costly penalties with moments of ill-discipline. 'The impact that they (Adelaide) had with their contested ball was far superior than ours,' Cox said. 'We'd fumble, get it to the next one, we might take it, then we'd handball or cough it up, then we'd go again. 'Whereas they were just a one-two punch, 'See you later, we're out of here'. 'Part of it comes to confidence when you are inconsistent, but the number one thing that brings consistency is, you spend time on your game. 'You know exactly when you finish the week and you start, I'm confident in my ability because I've done the work - that's the only way you build confidence. 'That's something that I've certainly got to drive harder and I'm going to.' Sydney will face 16th-placed Richmond before they head into their mid-season bye, while third-placed Adelaide play Brisbane.

EXCLUSIVE Brides at war! Married At First Sight stars in frosty feud as they clash over fur coat at fan meet-up event: 'Tone deaf'

They came for the selfies and stayed for the subtle shade. What was meant to be a cheerful Married At First Sight fan meet-up in Melbourne took an awkward turn when brides Natalie Parham and Jacqui Burfoot found themselves on opposite sides of a fashion-fuelled fallout. Witnesses didn't notice a scene - but behind the scenes, things got frosty fast. Daily Mail Australia can reveal Natalie, who paired on the Nine series last year, took issue with Jacqui's choice to wear imitation fur, calling it out as 'tone deaf' given recent backlash aimed at co-star Carina Mirabile for similar styling. 'She called her out for wearing imitation fur - [and] promoting the fur trade,' a spy revealed. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. 'Not sure why you'd wear it after all the Carina backlash, but that's just me - I'm no fashionista.' Jacqui, who had only purchased the garment the day before, was reportedly left upset by the unexpected criticism. Natalie admitted she 'pulled a face' and later felt compelled to apologise 'in advance' to co-star Clint Rice for how she handled the situation. 'She [Jacqui] was upset since she bought it yesterday and I pulled a face,' Natalie told Daily Mail Australia. 'I already said to them I disapprove of their throw stones mentality.' Despite the awkwardness, Natalie made it clear she wasn't interested in playing nice for appearances, instead choosing to spend time with friend Lyndall Grace. 'I wanted to hang out with Lyndall and I got to do that - if I don't like someone I don't associate with them,' she added bluntly. It comes after Carina hit back at an animal activist after she was slammed for wearing a 'fur coat' to Australian Fashion Week last month. Bailey, who runs the account Warrior For Animals, shared images of the reality TV star in the ankle-length 'vintage' coat, claiming she 'defied' the event's no animal skin rule. Carina later posted to her own social media page to assure followers the shaggy brown jacket she purchased in Brooklyn is actually faux fur. The debacle kicked off when Bailey shared a collage of Carina in her fur coat next to news AFW had 'banned all wildlife materials' from runways. The second time Carina mentioned wearing fur came during an interview with Daily Mail Australia when she was asked about her outfit. 'Yes this is my own 'fit. I bought this fur coat from New York in Brooklyn and I've got SKIMS on underneath and literally pantyhose stockings,' she said. Carina wore a nude SKIMS 'Ultimate Butt' bodysuit beneath the coat, opting for a look inspired by Kim Kardashian. While the bride has not directly referenced Bailey's accusations, she later shared a post to her Instagram Stories saying the coat is not real fur. 'It's not real fur FYI and my stylist uses vegan products,' she captioned an image of her look. Carina's makeup artist Angelina Jade commented beneath saying: 'She a vegan baddie.' The budding fashionista also made a statement to Chattr, reiterating she was not wearing real fur. 'It's not real fur, bought from a vintage store in New York. I wouldn't wear anything that's not ethically sourced,' she says. She went on to say it was 'worrying' to see people jump to conclusions so quickly. Carina later posted to her own social media page to assure followers the shaggy brown coat she purchased in Brooklyn is actually faux fur 'People are so quick to judge in this day and age and it's worrying and detrimental on people's lives,' 'We are not robots. If people have nothing nice to say, they shouldn't say anything at all. 'There is already enough cruelty in the world, people shouldn't add to it, but try and make it a better peaceful place.' Daily Mail Australia has reached out to Carina for further comment, as well as the Australian Fashion Council to verify any complaints made. AFW banned all wildlife-derived materials, including fur, exotic animal skins and feathers, from being used on runways this year and in the future.
